Thiamethoxam (2%) Pyroquilon (12%) Seedling Box Granule (SBGR) by new formulation technology showed good and sufficient efficacy against rice blast in the Tohoku area in 2003. The SBGR was as effective or more effective than some commercial products. To clarify the relationship between residual activity against rice blast and pyroquilon density in rice plant, the pyroquilon concentration in rice plant was analyzed at one-week or two-week intervals after transplanting. Pyroquilon provided by seedling box treatment was detected throughout the leaf blast season, and its concentration was maintained at 0.1 ppm for 63 days after transplanting. The 0.1 ppm concentration has been reported as the lowest effective limit against rice blast in the case of application of the nonrelease-controlled formulation for into-water application. It seemed that long-lasting efficacy of Thiamethoxam Pyroquilon SBGR against rice blast was achieved by release-controlled formulation.

Previously undescribed diseases occurred on rock isotome (
Laurentia axillaris) and verbena (
Verbena hortensis) in Yamagata in 1999. The causal fungi were identified as
Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and
C. acutatum, respectively, on the basis of morphological and cultural characteristics. This is the first report of anthracnose on two plants in Japan.

Distribution of the sorghum plant bug,
Stenotus rubrovittatus, was investigated by net sweeping on 100 gramineous forage grass fields in the southern Hokkaido from September to October 2003.
S. rubrovittatus was detected on eight forage grass fields growing the rye-grass or forage grasses (
Setaria viridis and
Setaria spp. or
Digitaria adscendes and
Digitaria spp.) at the southern edge of the Oshima peninsula in Hokkaido. The numbers of bugs captured by 10 time net sweeping were 2.0-9.8 adults and 0-1.8 nymphs in the occurred fields in early September. However, the bugs could not be detected by net sweeping in the fields of other areas or in the fields of other kinds of gramineous forage grass. The occurrence of this species was related to the rye-grass cultivation.

Supercooling points (SCPs) of females and nymphs of the western flower thrips,
Frankliniella occidentalis, were not different between populations reared under 16L-8D photoregime at 25°C and 8L-16D at 15°C. The period of 100% lethal time of yellow-colored females collected on 9 October 2001 from an unheated plastic film greenhouse was 336 hrs at-5°C, and those of dark-colored females collected on 23-28 November 2000 were 672 hrs at-5°C and 168 hrs at-10°C. The results indicate that the cold tolerance of these populations is stronger than that of populations reared at constant temperature.

Two isolates of
Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) from Aomori and Iwate Prefectures, TSWV-Ao and-Iw, were compared in terms of amino acid and nucleotide sequences of their nucleocapsid (N) protein and thrips transmissibihty with the common Japanese isolate, TSWV (TSWV-O). Tre amino acid and nucleotide sequences were almost identical not only among the three isolates (the former: 97.6-99.6% identity; the latter: 96.3-97.2% identity) but also among eight isolates including five TSWV isolates reported in previous studies (BR-1, TSWV-10, FoPaTsl, KmToTsl and NsChTsl) (the former: 96.1-100.0% identity; the latter: 95.7-99.3% identity). The efficiency of TSWV transmission by
Frankliniella occidentalis was also approximately the same among the three isolates of TSWV in both thrips populations collected from Aomori and Iwate Prefectures. These results suggest that TSWV-Ao and-Iw are common isolates in Japan.

Petunia leaf disks are often used to detect thrips transmitting
Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). In the present study, five
Petunia x hybrida cultivars were compared in terms of their susceptibilities to TSWV infection determined by inoculation with
Frankliniella occidentalis adults exposed as newly hatched larvae to TSWV at a given acquisition period. The efficiencies of TSWV transmission to two cultivars, ‘Polo Blue’ and ‘Celebrity Sky Blue’, by thrips transmitters were more than 90%. On the other hand, those of ‘Polo Rose Flare’, ‘Carpet Butter Cream’ and ‘Ultra Rose Star’ were lower, being 78.6%, 78.6% and 68.6%, respectively. This result suggests that several petunia cultivars are unsuitable in the assay using leaf disks to detect TSWV transmitters because of their low susceptibility to TSWV infection.
