Blast resistance in rice cvs. Sasanishiki and Hitomebore, and their near-isogenic lines (NILs) was evaluated in the experimental paddy field under the severe blast epidemic in 2001. Based on the number and type of leaf blast lesions formed on the NILs, races 007.0 and 037.1 of
Pyricularia grisea were presumed to be distributed in the field. Only R-or HR-type lesions were formed on the leaves of the NILs with the complete resistance genes to the local races. On the other hand, panicle blast severity was found to differ between Sasanishiki and Hitomebore NILs. The result suggests that among these NILs of which the genotype can confer complete resistance to the races, different levels of resistance to panicle blast can be observed in the paddy fields under severe blast epidemics.

The field resistance to leaf blast in nine Japanese upland rice cultivars was evaluated in greenhouse and upland nursery trials at the Philippine Rice Research Institute, the Mountainous Region Agricultural Institute, Aichi Agricultural Research Center, and the Department of Paddy Farming, National Agricultural Research Center for Tohoku Region. In all three institutes, the eight upland rice cultivars showed high levels of field resistance to leaf blast, which were equivalent to those of past evaluations in Japan. However, the cultivar Kuroka showed an intermediately low level of field resistance to the disease at the Philippine Rice Research Institute, although the cultivar exhibited a high level of field resistance at the two Japanese institutes. This result suggests that the level of field resistance to leaf blast in the Japanese upland rice cultivar Kuroka changes in the Philippines.

Since 2001, clubroot of Japanese radish (
Raphanus sativus L. var
hortensis Baker., daikon group) caused by
Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin has been observed in Fukushima, Japan. Symptoms of the disease were first observed in early August as wilting of plants. Fluorescence microscopy revealed the presence of resting spores in clubroot tissues and infested soil. Seeds of Chinese cabbage, broccoli, cabbage and komatsuna (
Brassica campestris L., rapifera group) were grown in infested soil, then all these plants were infected with
P. brassicae and developed clubroot. This is the first report concerning the incidence of clubroot of Japanese radish in Fukushima.

The effects of methionine treatment on damping-off caused by
Aphanomyces cochlioides in greenhouses, and the growth of hyphae and germ tubes in culture were studied. Application of 420-600 ppm methionine to seedlings 7 days after sowing resulted in significant reduction of infestation of sugar beet plants by
A. cochlioides in an artificially inoculated soil test. In zoospore inoculation tests, application of 200-600ppm methionine one day before inoculation reduced the severity of damping-off. The colony diameter of
A. cochlioides on PDA treated with 420 ppm methionine was reduced to 97.9% of that on PDA without methionine. The length of the germ tube from the zoospore in 400 ppm methionine solution for 24 hours was 24% of that treated with distilled water. These results suggest that suppression of damping-off by methionine is partly caused by suppression of the growth of germ tubes and hyphae during
A. cochliides infection.

The effects of thiram on seed decay and seedling blight of adzuki bean caused by
Pythium species were investigated in a field trial and a container test. Seeds of adzuki bean cv. Hokkai-shiroshozu, Toiku No.146, Tokei No.837 and Erimo-shozu were coated with 40% flowable thiram or 80% wettable thiram powder at the rate of 2% and 0.5% of the seed weight, respectively. Thiram was effective in reducing seed decay and seedling blight of adzuki bean.

In August 2001, wilted soybeans were observed in a rotational upland field in Shinshinotsu village, Hokkaido. The crowns and roots of the wilted plants were brown and decaying. Perithecia, which were reddish brown and about 0.5 mm in diameter, were observed in great numbers on the surface of the crowns. We isolated and identified pathogenic fungi from the wilted plant specimens, and examined their pathogenicity to soybean. From the results of this study, we clarified that the disease of the wilted soybean was root necrosis caused by
Calonectria ilicicola. This is the first report of this disease in Hokkaido.

The ascospore-discharge period of the apple blotch fungus and the effect of fungicide application during the discharge period on apple blotch development were investigated. Ascospore discharge started on 7 May 2001 and lasted until the beginning of July. When some effective fungicides were applied during the discharge period, the level of damage to apple trees by the disease was low. From these results, infection with ascospores is believed to be strongly associated with apple blotch development.

Colletotrichum acutatum has been identified as a causal fungus of bitter rot of apples in Aomori.
C. gloeosporioides, long known as a causal fungus of bitter rot, is predominant in the western part of the prefecture, where apples have been produced in monoculture. In contrast,
C. acutatum is predominant in the eastern part of the prefecture, where a variety of fruits are produced. In most of the sampling sites in the western prefecture,
C. gloeosporioides was found to be predominant in apples, and
C. acutatum in the wild host plant Robinia pseudoacacia. Inoculation tests on apples indicated that
C. gloeosporioides is slightly more pathogenic than
C. acutatum.

In November 1998, powdery mildew was observed on African violet (
Saintpaulia ionantha H. Wendl.) in Morioka, Japan. There are no descriptions of the symptoms of this disease on African violet and the morphology of this fungus in Japan. A white, powdery mycelial colony appeared on petals and flower stalks of the plant. Conidia with fibrosin bodies were cylindric to doliform, 24-43×14-22μm in size and born in chain on conidiophores. Germ tubes from conidia were straight or occasionally nippleshaped. No cleistothecia was observed on the diseased plant. From the morphology at the conidial stage, the fungus was identified to be a species of
Oidium.

Previously undescribed diseases occurring on hellebore (
Helleborus spp.) and rock isotome (
Laurentia axillaris) were found in Yamagata. Two isolates obtained from these plants demonstrated pathogenicity to each host plant by inoculation tests. The two isolates were identified as
Botrytis cinerea based on morphological and cultural characteristics. This is the first report of gray mold on hellebore and rock isotome in Japan.
