The transportation volume is increasing rapidly with diversification of global industrial activities such as the procurement, production, and sales.
So the container shipping companies have to enlarge the fleet. Consequently the M & A and re-organizations of the Alliance become active. Therefore, in order to consider the management of container shipping companies, the analysis of acquisition etc. is necessary.
In this study, we clarify the relationship between change of a fleet by acquisition, and diversification of an income or a profit. And based on these relationships, we analyze about the means of the allocation of ship in acquisition of Maersk Line.

Some studies concluded that the deregulation in the Japanese trucking industry had made shippers' surplus larger. However, they did not mention where the shippers' surplus came from. We find that most of the shippers' surplus increase is transferred from the decrease of laborers' surplus and the decrease of trucking carriers' profit. Thus, the net social surplus has hardly increased.

This paper aims at examining, from the perspectives of evolutionary economics, the elements of paradigm that logistics researchers and practioners alike have shared among them. First, the direction of deepening the logistics study as an established academic discipline is identified. Among others, the rationality of 'efficiency improvement' is questioned. It is pointed out that 'optimisation' concept is ambiguous and lacks rationality. Second, questions are made on the permanency of current paradigm such as 'lean stock', 'full utilisation of IT', 'value adding', integrated supply chain management' and 'outsourcing'. Finally, an overview is offered on the factors that can influence the future evolution of logistics paradigms; i.e. 'transportation capacity', 'logistics service market structure', 'global environmental protection' and the 'importance of dynamic approach'.

It is becoming common that 3PL contract fee is decided by the % of product value, which passes thru the logistic-center, and profit control by the contractor is becoming difficult. This is a very much different from the traditional logistic cost factor. Also, this kind of simple and uniform contract fee, which covers all stages 3PL related business, causes a serious risk for the contractor.
Strictly speaking, they should make the contract based on Activity Based Costing (ABC), but they also need to have quick and easy assesment system which corresponds to the competition. So, this kind of changeable contract system needs to make their logistics business cost structure more flexible and various kinds of business improvement are requested.

This paper aims to apply the some concepts in cooperative game theory in analyzing the Cooperative Freight Transportation System (COFT). It mainly involves : 1) Abstract some traits of cost function inside COFT and construct the relevant conceptual game. 2) Establish the profit allocation system for players and calculate the shares of different cases in three-person game. 3) Analyze stability of these cases on the shares. 4) Make clear the reasons of which cases' structures of three-person alliance are stable with the allocation way and provide advises for companies and public sectors. Through this paper, we hope to show a simple notional game of COFT, and propose an analysis ways of profit allocation as well as stability of different cases in this COFT game.

Japan Post was privatized from its public corporation status to a private company as a result of the postal reform, whereas USO, which had been imposed on Japan Post, is principally succeeded to the new business unit. This paper firstly examines the concept of USO and then compares the postal USO in Japan with those in foreign services, aiming to provide future perspectives on a desirable USO.

The adoption and use of EDI in the developing countries seems to be difficult. This paper attempts to propose the possible introductions steps of EDI in ports. To investigate this issue, analysis on the current trends of EDI in 14 countries are carried out and major developing countries in Asia are included in the study together with USA and two countries in Europe. First, 58 ports related EDI systems in 14 countries are extracted and these systems are distinguished by their version. The study examined the characteristics of each EDI system and three main categories are found such as organizations, functions and services. Next, cluster analysis has been used to find the groups and directions of introducing the EDI systems. Then quantification theory has been applied to the EDI systems in order to extract the trends, stages and the underlying factors in the introduction steps. Findings indicate that organizations, services and functions affect the introduction steps of the EDI systems in port.

The regional flow in logistics is considered to largely relate to the industrial location. While the factor of industrial location includes transport cost factors and non-transport cost factors, non-transport cost factors such as land cost, labor cost and others have become more important than transport cost factors even in remote location, due to the decrease in transport cost. The changes in the relative significance between transport cost factors and non-transport cost factors have an influence on industrial location.

Recently, Japanese auto manufacturers are trying to procure parts by milk-run at their foreign factories. Through a survey on Japanese auto manufacturers in Thailand, we find that they introduced milk-run in order to increase efficiency of logistics at first stage and that they build and are now operating milk-run as more frequent and accurate procurement system for smaller lot synchronizing with manufacturing process to decrease inventories. We also clarify that auto manufacturers control procurement process, calculate costs of logistics accurately, and try to involve suppliers into continuous improvement (kaizen) by introducing milk-run system.

Increased needs are identified in Japan to reduce environmental pollutions due to inter-regional cargo transport by the modal shift from truck use to railway and domestic maritime shipping uses. We analyze the cargo transport behaviors by using random parameter logit model, which is recently watched. The main database for this study is “The survey of cargo flow in 2000”. This data set contains disaggregated data of each shipper's commodity, volume, origin and destination, modes and routes, and ports, stations and facilities. This result indicates the time value of short-distance maritime transport users is higher than the environmentally friendly transport users' one, reflecting various consumers' needs for logistics services. Moreover, lot size is an influential factor for the air transport users. The analysis of elasticity effects brings that the speed up of rail transport makes a contribution to modal shift by comparison with other transports and the port accessibility within Hokkaido is a bottleneck for the long-distance maritime transport usage.

Middle and small-scale harbors as well as large-scale ports in China as Shanghai port and Shenzhen port are threatening the Busan port, growing up rapidly recently. Specially, growth of the central port in North China, main transshipment network object area of Busan port, is expected to be connected with the decrease of transshipment freight of Busan port. The competition among ports is expected to rise more and in this competitive system, early revitalization of Busan new port is bringing more important problem into relief.
