The writer (SATO, 1957) had described the distribution of the genus Oropogon with special reference to the Japanese species, and later he (SATO, 1962) classified the genus in Pan-Pacific Distribution group. According to his recent study, the autonomy of the species of Oropogon must be revised, so he discussed in this paper the distribution of the genus as a whole, not separate into each species.
Under the co-operation of FH, PC, TI, TNS, UPS, US and others, the writer could test more than 200 specimens of the genus Oropogon, and found that its distribution is not Pan-Pacific as is shown in Fig. 3. The genus Oropogon was found in Japan, Formosa, China Proper, Himalaya, Philippines, Java, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominica, Colombia, Venezuela, Equador, Peru, Bolivia, Brasil and Chile.
In Japan, the most common substratum of the genus Oropogon is the bark of Fagus crenata BL. and it is rarely found on coniferous trees.
O. tanakae ASAHINA, an endemic and very rare species of Japan, is saxicolous, while most of the specimens collected in other countries are corticolous except few terricolous ones.
The vertical distribution of the genus Oropogon lies between 626m and 1700m in Japan, 1500m and 3600m in Formosa, 2000m and 3600m in China, 2400m and 4000m in Himalaya, 2400m and 2700m in Mexico, 1500m and 3000m in Costa Rica, 2800m and 4000m in Colombia, 2400m and 3000m in Peru, 1850m and 2100m in Haiti, 2285m and 3050m in Dominica.
