Isothermal crystallization behaviors from the melt have been investigated for poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) thin films by time-resolved measurements of grazing-incidence X-ray scattering using synchrotron radiation. P3HB films with thicknesses of ca. 25 nm ~ 3.2 μm prepared on silicon substrates were cooled rapidly from the melt to a crystallization temperature, Tc, of 373 K by using a temperature-jump (T-jump) apparatus. Isothermal crystallization behaviors of P3HB in thin films were traced by simultaneous measurements of grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). It was experimentally found for the first time that the induction time of crystallization became longer with reducing the film thickness. This indicated that the chain mobility necessary for nucleation at 373 K was reduced in thin films. It was also indicated that lamellar crystals having the edge-on type orientation to the substrate surface were preferentially formed at the beginning of crystallization. Those lamellae in the thin films might be stacked one another with amorphous chains in a disordered manner.

The enzyme orotate phosphoribosyl transferase (OPRTase) is involved in the de novo pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis; it is a good target for antimicrobial agents. Also, some of the cancerous cells are known to depend on de novo pathway, this enzyme could be a potential drug target for cancer therapy. Orotate phosphoribosyl transferase is an important enzyme, which converts orotate to orotate monophosphate in the fifth step of pyrimidine biosynthesis. As the enzyme is from a hyperthermophile it is known to be stable at high temperatures and can be used as a model organism. The rheology of suspensions of colloidal particles plays a critical role in many technological applications where it is essential to control the flow properties by tuning the shear viscosity. Theoretical calculations showed that introducing porosity into colloids gives an additional degree of freedom to tune their hydrodynamic properties. The goal of this project is to carry out an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) study on such nano-particles to verify these theories, using nanoparticles of precisely controlled size and porosity which became available recently. To distinguish between prevailing theories we need to reach the high q plateau of the hydrodynamic function, where q denotes the momentum transfer in scattering.

Rheology of colloidal suspensions is of considerable interest for scientific as well as technological reasons. The nature of interparticle interactions determines the colloidal structure and hence the flow behavior of suspensions. There has been much interest in controlling the colloidal rheology through altering the interparticle forces. By introducing smaller particles into a suspension of large colloidal particles, the pressure of the small particles produces an additional attractive force between the colloids. This is referred to as the depletion force. [1] Existing experimental studies have demonstrated the profound influence of depletion forces on the deformation behavior of colloidal suspensions. [2] The goal of this project is to carry out an x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) study to understand the dynamical perspective of this phenomenon.

自動車用排ガス浄化触媒の課題として、貴金属凝集抑制による性能向上及び貴金属使用量低減が要求されている。現在研究中の新規 Rh 担持法触媒(以下、新規法)は、従来 Rh 担持法触媒(以下、従来法)に対し、Rh 凝集の抑制とより低温からの活性向上効果を見出した。
今回、この要因を探るため、EXAFSによる Rh 状態解析を行った結果、新規法では還元雰囲気下において低温から速やかに Rh-O が Rh-Rh に変化する事が確認された。一方、劣化抑制では、酸化雰囲気中に生成する「Rh-O-Nd」の影響が大きい事が推定された。また、XANESの結果では、従来法の Rh 吸収端に対して高エネルギー側にシフトしていることから、新規担持方法を適応する事で Nd
2O
3 の再配分が促進され、Rh に対して Nd
2O
3 の接触頻度が適度に高まり劣化抑制と低温活性が高いレベルで両立したものと推察した。
