Phonon dynamics of multiferroic Sr_0.5Ba_0.5Mn_0.97Ti_0.03O₃ was investigated by means of inelastic x-rays cattering. We found that the mode which corresponds to the soft mode in the paraelectric materials becomes prominent below the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature. On the other hand, the energies of transverse optical phonon modes remain almost constant upon the magnetic ordering. This suggests that dynamical fluctuation of electric dipole moments is crucial for a large spin-phonon coupling.

In-situ monitoring of the crystal structure formation during growth of InAs and InAsSb based nanostructure arrays on patterned Si(111) substrates, was performed in a combined molecular beam epitaxy(MBE) growth and X-ray characterization experiment. An e-beam lithography defined mask etched into a SiO₂ film grown on Si(111) substrates was used for the selective area growth. This method enables us to characterize the relative formation rates of the most common polytypic phases 3C (Zinc-blende) and 2H (Wurtzite) during growth, but also higher order sequences like 4H and 6H. Moreover, the effect of adding a small amount of Sb to the growth system was observed to have a direct impact on the growth mechanisms, as it induced a solid phase transition from the Wurtzite to the Zinc-blende crystal structure.

We have measured the density of liquid Fe_98.3O_1.7 in the P-T range of 1.4 - 6.1 GPa and 1950 - 2250 K using X-ray absorption method at BL22XU. Microprobe analysis of the recovered samples showed the reaction between the sample and BN spacer. After removing the BN contribution to the sample density, the estimated densities of liquid Fe-O increase from 6.71 to 7.08 g⁄cm3 with pressure at 2200 K.
