The aim of this experiment was to investigate the temperature dependence of the spin density of the Invar system Fe
65Ni
35 via measurements on a single crystal using magnetic Compton scattering. We made measurements of the spin density resolved along the [100] and [110] crystallographic directions. The temperature dependence exhibited a subtle change in the momentum density. Interestingly, the momentum distribution of the spin moment was different for the two crystallographic directions. It would appear that increasing temperature has a complicated effect on the contributions of the electrons from different orbitals, rather than just causing a change in the amount of delocalisation. This change requires further investigation, particularly with further compositions being studied in order to determine whether the change in electronic structure can be correlated with the existence of the Invar effect.

The degradation of reversible hydrogen storage capacity of V-Ti-Cr alloys can be greatly reduced by dissolving a small amount of Nb, yet the exact role of Nb in improving cyclic stability is not known. In this study, we have investigated local structural changes in V
0.25Ti
0.25Cr
0.5H
2 and V
0.25Ti
0.25Cr
0.45Nb
0.05H
2 during hydrogen cycling using the X-ray atomic pair distribution function and the extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra to understand the effect of Nb. Our study suggests that during hydrogen cycling large Ti atoms are dragged to dislocation cores to reduce strain induced by dislocations. This leaves Ti-poor regions near dislocations for which higher hydrogen gas pressure is required for hydrogen uptake. It is most probable that Nb prevents the segregation of Ti.

The low-temperature high-pressure structures of elemental selenium (Se) have been characterized by in-situ x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. A phase diagram appropriate for the P-T conditions is constructed from the results. Unlike the closely related elemental barium (Ba), no new structure was found by first cooling the sample to 10 K and then compressed to 34 GPa. Biomineralization is utilised by animals to form durable yet lightweight structures, e.g. bones, teeth and shells. Here we focus on the microstructure of the exoskeleton of the heart urchin because of its unusual strength. This species shares many features with sea urchins but deviates in appearance because it has adapted to withstand high pressures because it is buried in the sand.

In this report, we present the characterization of CaCo

3 perovskite thin films prepared from the oxidation of CaCo

2.5 brownmillerite films using a NaClO solution. The oxidation state and octahedral coordination of cobalt in CaCoO

In-situ powder X-ray diffraction patterns of a dense mixture of elemental Li and molecular nitrogen in a diamond anvil cell were recorded using synchrotron radiation. From the changes in the X-ray diffraction features, the formation of molecular complexes was observed at very low pressure. Upon a compression to above 4 GPa in conjunction with annealing by laser heating, an almost uniformly distributed single phase was observed. The X-ray diffraction patterns cannot be explained by any known phases of Li
-2 system. The X-ray diffraction pattern, however, bears similarities with that of the theoretically predicted hexagonal LiN

We have performed the measurements of the sound velocities of fcc-FeH
x and fcc-Fe by using a pulse-echo overlap technique at high pressures and high temperatures at BL04B1. The P-wave velocity (
VP) of fcc-FeH
x (
x~0.4) at approximately 12.0 GPa and 900 K was same as that of fcc-Fe, indicating no hydrogen effect on
VP of fcc-Fe under that pressure-, temperature-, and hydrogen-conditions.
