The light weight aggregates calcination is carried out in a cross flow type moving bed furnace. The product of suitable apparent density cannot be obtained unless apparent density of a green pellet is enough small. It is found that smooth discharge cannot be attained when agglomeration of the product pellet occurs during calcination. Pressure drop across the bed is observed as one of indices that is considered to represent agglomeration state of the bed. At the same time an appropriate operation condition which attains smooth discharge and good quality product is examined experimentally. Above a certain value of pressure drop, increase in pressure drop is induced from increase of contact area of the particle, in which situation a hard agglomerated body is considered to appear in the bed. It is shown that if maximum allowable pressure drop is obtained and operation is carried out in such a way as real pressure drop does not exceed the maximum allowable value, extraordinally agglomerated body is less to be found in the bed.
