Fractionation of pitch by vacuum sublimation is investigated using model pitches prepared from polyvinyl chloride and acenaphthylene. The fractions are studied by means of elementary analysis, determination of molecular weight, IR spectroscopy, UV spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy. The results are discussed as regards the chemical structure of the fractions.
It is shown that the polyvinyl chloride pitch contains two types of components. In addition, decacyclene and 1 0, 11-(peri-naphthylene)-fluoranthene are identified in the acenaphthylene pitch.
