  • A Case Study of the Effects of Partial Relocation on the “Oyashia Land Reclamation Community” Resultant to a New Town Development

    Agricultural management as well as corporative associations in most land reclamation projects in suburban areas are typically stagnant and in decline. “The Oyashima Land Reclamation Community” located in Ibaraki Prefecture has in part been relocated as the result of a new town construction project organized by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation. Consequently, in spite of its location close to the metropolitan suburban area, the “Oyashima Land Reclamation Community” has succeeded in maintaining and developing its agricultural managemeet. This study examines the main reasons for the Community's success, which are as follows:
    The “Oyashima Land Reclamation Community” has its own peculiar character in terms of its strong and intimate human relationships which have been fostered since the “Manshu-Moko Reclamation Period” prior to World War II. Such human relationships played a crucial role in negotiations over farmland compensation, resulting in increasing compensation payments.
    The community was located in the suburban boundary area, nevertheless, it was able to obtain new land for relocation. Parts of the new land acquired were allocated to certain specialist producers within the community. As a result the community revitalised its agricultural management and developed it to an advanced level.

    In the alpine areas of Japanese high mountains there are extensively distributed block slopes called fossil periglacial slope or “Glatthang” in German. The period of formation of these slopes, however, has not yet been specified, though it is roughly guessed to be in the last glacial age. In this study we tried to make clear the period of debris production and debris movement on these slopes, using the weathering-rind thickness on blocks as a measure. Our study area is a westfacing windward slope located back to back with Nogaike Cirque on Mt. Kisokomagatake, the Central Japanese Alps. Slope deposits are composed of coarse blocks and the greater part of this slope is covered with Pinus pumila scrubs.
    To gain the standard values of the weathering-rind thickness, we examined at first the younger morain which deposited at the lower margin of the Nogaike Cique. This morain are composed of large blocks and considered to have been constructed during the maximum glacial age (about 20, 000y. B. P.). There, we gained 5.66mm thick weathering-rind in average.
    On a fossil periglacial block slope two values of weathering-rind thickness were obtained; 5.85mm in the upper part and 5.64mm in the middle part. Though these values are slightly bigger than that of morain deposits, these three values are considered similar to one another. Judging from these data, fossil periglacial slope in this area is estimated to be formed in the last maximum glacial.

    In this paper, the reliabirity of statistical parameters, which were obtained from 1/2 and 1phi sieve interval analysis, were examined comparing to the values of 1/4phi sieve interval analysis.
    Swash zone and dune sands were collected from the shoreline along Sendai and Shonai Coastal Plain, they are located north eastern part of Honshu Island, Japan. 468 samples were prepared for this analysis. They were sieved by 1/4phi interval mean diameter, standard deviation and skewness were calculated respectively by the moment methods. After that the statistical parameters by using 1/2phi and 1phi sieve interval are calculated numerically.
    Values obtained from 1/2phi sieve interval analysis indicate close approximation to those of 1/4phi sieve analysis. On the other hand, the values obtained form 1phi sieve analysis did not indicate exact grain size characteristics except the mean diameter.
