In treatment environment, drainage including high density fatty oil exert evil influence to bioprocesses. Using micro-organisms activator is one of the countermeasures for these problems. But it is expensive and difficult to cultivate, because it is generally produced by pure culture. In this study, fatty oil decomposing micro-organism was cultivated by adding only fatty oil in an activated sludge process combined with membrane separation. Consequently, the following results were obtained.
(1) From mass balance of fatty oil in the continuous experiment performed, the process used in this study could cultivate fatty oil decomposing micro-organisms. The cultivation parameters obtained Y=1.12 (-), m=0.011 (1/day), μ
max=0.017 (1/day), K
s=1983 (mg/L). As an operating condition, the oil loading wasrecommended below Hexane extracts-SS load 0.025 (kg-Hex/kg-MILSS/day).
(2) The batch experiment showed that the micro-organisms cultivated with fatty oil gave the maximum oil decomposing rate about twice as much as that obtained by control micro-organisms cultivated without fatty oil. and that the saturation constant was one third of that of the control. From these results, it is clarified that these micro-organisms have high fatty oil decomposing activity and high affinity.
(3) From the result of plate-counting. the cultivation process developed here gave the number of fatty oil decomposition bacteria three times as high as that in the control cultivation.
(4) From the results of fatty acid measurement by GC, free fatty acids that are hydrolyzed products of fatty oil were observed during the cultivation in the reactor, which clearly shows that the decomposition of fatty oil was significantly taking place in the process.
