    Recently, the walls, doors and furniture are constructed to nail or to stick the surface board to the furring strips. The effects of the Spacing of furring strips, the spacing on nail driven to fit surface materials, thickness of the back air layer, and size and shape of the specimen were investigated. And the tapping sound of the walls, doors and furniture of a existing house were measured. The test result allows improvement in material to give it a "thick" sensation. This can be done by reducing the spacing of furring strips or driving nails, or by reducing the thickness of the back air layer, even though a thinner material is used. This method can be used to test the sound of tapping the walls, doors and furniture and to evaluate how thick the materials feel.

    This paper proposes a simple but precise method to estimate the local differences of seismic intensity in an area of moderate-to-large city by an introduction of the questionnaire technique, a case study of which was performed in Sapporo city, Immediately after large earthquake which occurred off Urakawa, Hokkaido, on March 21, 1982, a seismic intensity survey by delivering 10,000 questionnaire sheets throughout Sapporo city was conducted and a high-precise isoseismal map was derived. By comparing with the geological data in the area it was found that the obtained intensities are well correlated with surface soil types and are in a good functional relation with soil layer thickness. Based upon this result an empirical equation for estimating seismic intensity at any point in Sapporo city was also derived. It is [numerical formula] where [numerical formula]

    This paper introduces two approaches for deriving empirical equations of seismic intensity distribution law. The first one is a rough estimation of spatial intensity distribution. The extension of area with a given intensity was evaluated by means of the least squares method using the Turkish earthquake data in recent 50 years. It was found that earthquake magnitude is the most influential factor, except for the time-dependent field determination criterion of intensity and that seismic intensity attenuates with distances more rapidly in Turkey than in western United States and in Japan. Brief examination of isoseismal configuration shows that isoseismals of higher intensities are more elongated in shape and that the fault length approximately corresponds to the major axis of intensity VIII or IX. The second approach is more precise evaluation of seismic intensity from site to site at short-to-moderate epicentral distances. Based upon an advanced model considering seismic source parameters such as fault configuration, size and slip displacement, isoseismals of the 7 recent earthquakes (M_s>__-6.0) with maximum intensity of VIII or IX were studied and a better empirical equation was obtained.

    In this paper, a simulation method of acceleration envelopes by fault models is proposed. In the method, the theoretical acceleration envelope E(x,t) is obtained as the output of the following system. [numerical formula] Where an input p(t) is determined by means of a fault model, and e(t) is determined by such a function that makes an error between theoretical and observer envelopes minimum. In this system, e(t), an impulse response, represents the properties of the wave propagation path between the fault and the observational point x. Envelopes and functions p(t) and e(t) are calculated for Miyagi-Oki Earthquake of June 12, 1978. Based on the calculation, the possibility and meanings of the simulation of short-period seismic ground motions by fault models are considered.

    Strength capacity of a story in low and mid-rise steel building considering the influence of horizontal load eccentricity is discussed in this paper. Firstly, the plastic-hinge numerical analysis taking into account the effect of torsion of members is described. Secondly, examples of 21 buildings sampled randomly from actual steel buildings and actual eccentricities were investigated. Then, the shapes of the strength interaction surfaces expressed in three axes of two directional lateral forces and torsion, of a story in these buildings, were obtained from the numerical analysis. On the other hand, an approximate equation of the strength surface was assumed, and its analytical values were compared with the above numerical values considering dispersion. Finaly, an empirical formula for the evaluation of lateral strength capacity reduction was derived taking the eccentricity into account. Further, the evaluation of equivarent strength associated with ductility under earthquake loading is presented.

    The behavior of the intermedicate steel beam-columns subjected to torsion combined with constant axial load was studied experimentally. Eleven specimens were tested with different combinations of the cross-sectional shapes and the axial force ration. The results of the experiment and the analysis may be summarized as follows : (1) The specimens of thin-walled open section under the high axial force ratio failed due to the formation of a collapse mechanism and those under the low axial force ratio did not fail as a result of the strain-hardening and the helix effect. Further, the specimens of thin-walled closed section failed due to local bucling. (2) The maximum torque is affected by the axial force ration. (3) The ductility factor is affected by the cross-sectional type and the axial force ratio. (4) The band-plate increases the elastic stiffness and the yield torque. (5) The inelastic torsional behavior can be conservatively estimated based on the plastic hinge method.

    Shear yielding type members dealt with in this paper are short steel members with H-section cross-sectioal shapes which are proportioned so that the yielding of web plate precedes the yielding of flange plate. It has been already made clear experimentally that this type of members show very excellent deformation characteristics, and the effectual use of these members may afford an advantageous measure in the earthquake resistant desing of buildings. To practically apply these members in the design of buildings, it is necessary to know their precise load-deformation characteristics up to their collapse state. Based on a series of experiments on beam-type and collumn-type specimens, empirical formulas are derived and the applicability of them are ascertained through comparison with previous experimental research works.

    The object of this study is to develop a new SRC, [H or cross H shaped high strength steel]-[concrete]-[hoop reinforcements] composite, in which longitudinal reinforcements are not used. Experiments were carried out about the restoring force characteristics of the SRC members with emphasis on the effects of hoop reinforcements. 54 specimes including 8 R/C ones were tested. The loading conditions were monotonic compression, cyclic bending, constant axial force and cyclic bending, cyclic shear-bending, and cyclic shear-bending under constant axial force, The nominal strengths of the steel plates used in the specimens were 41 kg/mm^2, 60kg/mm^2 80kg/mm^2. The main conclusions of this study are as follows. (1) Deformation of the SRC member under compression is due not only to compressive strain but also to slip at the diagonal crack. (2) Hoop reinforcements improve the compressive behavior of the concrete and protect the steel from local buckling. Hoop reinforcements, consequently, improve the restoring force characteristics of the SRC column. (3) [H shaped steel]-[concrete]-[hoop reinforcements] composite member has quite good aseismic performance.

    In this paper, the updated-lagrangian formulation which is usually used in the finite element method with considering the reference convected local co-ordinate system, is applied to the Mode Superposition Method by refering to the convected curvilinear co-ordinate system. In this formulation, the strain-displacement transformation matrices do not contain the initial strain components, and the transformation matrices of co-ordinates become successively variable values in the continuum. All components in the strain-displacement matrices and all components in the transformation matrices of co-ordinates change as the continuum deforms. Here, the change of the components is estimated with the change of the metric tensor, etc. in the convected curvilinear co-ordinate system and the direction cosines of angles formed between the global co-ordinate system and the local co-ordinate system on the points of the numerical integration at each step routine or each iteration routine. The present results for some examples point out that total-lagrangian formulation refered to the initial configuration come to have errors in the very large deformation region of post-buckling, and the present method using the updated-lagrangian formulation can follow the behaviour in that region.

    This paper describes the experimental and analytical results carried out in order to investigate the bond deterioration in the neighborhood of the crack. The experiments are carried out on the deformed bars subjected to the pull and on the reinforced concrete beams subjected to the bending moment and shear force. The strains of the longitudinal bars and concrete surface are measured in detail and the local bond stress versus the local slip relations are investigated in the neighborhood of the crack, The one of the tested beams is analyzed by FEM using the bond link and crack link mechanism in the consideration of the bond deterioration near the crack based on the experimental results. The conclusions of this paper are as follows ; (1) In the neighborhood of the crack, the maximum bond stress and the bond stiffness are significantly lower than in some distance from the crack. And the deteriorations are not observed on the local bond stress versus the local slip relations in the 3〜4 times as long distance as the diameter of the bar apart from the crack. (2) In the neighborhood of the crack, the maximum bond stress is lower linearly depending on the distance from the crack. (3) The maximum bond stress of the longitudinal bars of beams is lower than that of the bars obtained by pull-out tests. The bond deterioration of the longitudinal bars of beams near the crack, however, shows the similar tendency as the results of the pull-out tests. (4) The load-deflection relations, the strain distribution and the bond stress distribution obtained by FEM analysis in consideration of the bond deterioration near the crack agree very well with the experimental results.
