This paper presents current trends and issues in mesh processing technology. Although automated meshing generation methods in two and three dimensions have been studied intensively, many analysis engineers still craft meshes manually for a certain class of analysis problems. In order to realize fully automated mesh generation, two technical issues need to be addressed : (1) automated mesh generators should be able to control anisotropy and directionality of a mesh, and (2) geometric operations required prior to mesh generation should be made more robust and automated. In this paper, recent development of the two technical issues is reviewed in order to encourage further research and development of advanced mesh processing technology.

As a method to input 3-dimensional configuration for the finite element analysis we are required to create a set of triangles as to cover whole surface of the shape using point clouds on the surface. For smooth surface the neighbors for each point are sufficient to create triangles necessary to surround the point, but difficulty appears to generate triangles close to feature lines appearing on the surface. Present paper explains two different methods to extract features from point clouds which are prepared by the users.

We developed technique for automatically generating a hexahedral mesh of a complex solid model. This technique can automatically convert a solid model to a feature shape model that consists of the feature lines necessary for generating hexahedral mesh. We have thus automated the interactive operations (such as model editing) that are carried out as a pretreatment for hexahedral mesh generation, and significantly shortened the time taken for these interactive operations. Furthermore, a technique for generating high quality hexahedral mesh that faithfully expressed the corner part of a solid model was developed. We applied these developed techniques to the generation of the hexahedral mesh of an engine block model, and confirmed that the mesh generation time is shortened to one eighth that of the conventional method.

In recent years, the needs of the mesh processing techniques represented by the mesh enhancement technique which improves the quality of a mesh are more and more increasing. Here, we are concerned with enhancement technique especially for triangular meshes which may include sharp features and/or boundaries of surfaces. We propose the technique called Trapezium Drawing method with signed aspect ratio for mesh enhancement. Several examples are shown and also the comparison results with other methods such as Laplacian smoothing are presented.
