To create female tailor’s dummies for women’s clothing design, we analyzed middle-aged women’s body shapes, mainly focusing on the upper body, using three-dimensional measurement data acquired from women aged 40 - 60. The results showed the following characteristics of middle-aged women : larger body circumference and thickness, dropping nipple point and buttock position, lower bust position, and larger anterior thighs than seen in younger women. Even though their body sizes were the same as those of young women, there were differences in details, such as the breadth of the rear side of the upper arm, greater fat thickness in the area below the shoulder joint, and the position ofthe armhole. The study revealed that to create tailor’s dummies for middle-aged women, it is necessary to use slopers (flat paper master patterns) that are designed specifically for middle-aged women’s body shapes. Based on the results of our cluster analysis, we classified middle-aged women’s body shapes into two types : a group with a slim body shape like a young woman and another group with a body shape noticeably characteristic of middle-aged women. The average body shape obtained from each cluster group also showed that middle-aged women’s body shapes vary widely from individual to individual, suggesting the need to create tailor’s dummies and slopers that are matched to the variety of their body shapes.
