Electro-optical characteristics of PDLC illuminated by directly attached light-guide, which is expected for direct-viewing displays with high optical efficiency, were studied. Comparing to usual illumination method, in which the incident angle is almost normal to the panel, the saturation voltage was higher for light-guide illumination. This result is due to the observation direction is almost perpendicular to the rays of the illumination.

The relationship between pretilt and period of polyimide (PI) surface morphology was investigated, by using cells that the polyimide surfaces have various morphology with constant optical structure. As the result, the pretilt angle monotonically decreased as amplitude of surface roughness increased. The change of pretilt angle was strongly correlated with the wave component with period of 40 nm in the surface morphology. The same tendency observed in case of different structure of PI.

Electrically switchable three-dimensional images were uniformly recorded on holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) using optical replication of master hologram. The recording process was more stable and resulting hologram was more uniform than that made by conventional methods. Therefore this replication method is also promising to fabricate HPDLC for display applications.

Using linearly polarized ultraviolet light, photoalignment of liquid crystals has been carried out on films of methacrylate liquid crystal copolymers with an alkyl group and a photoreactive β-(2-furylacryloyl)oxyethoxybiphneyl mesogenic side group. The rate of photoreaction was about 30 times faster in the β-(2-furylacryloyl) group than in the conventional photoreactive cinnamoyl group. Irradiation of polarized ultraviolet light on polymer film generated pretilt angles of liquid crystal molecules, which varied from 0 to 90 degrees according to copolymerization ratio. High thermal stability for both the LC alignment and pretilt angles were observed after heating the cell at 100℃ for 55 hours.

The IPS-LCDs are widely adopted to the monitor display of the personal computers because of their wide viewing angle and small color shift characteristics. However, it becomes to be known that the IPS mode has a peculiar image sticking problem caused by the lateral electric field. A relation between azimuthal anchoring energy and the image sticking characteristics of the IPS mode has been studied experimentally.

Microgroove (MG) substrate using a ruling engine was evaluated geometrically and optically. As the result, it was confirmed that the MG substrate had periodic structure and uniform molecular alignment was observed partially. Precise control of the ruling engine promises uniform molecular alignment of LCDs.

The photorefractive effect of low-molecular-weight ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) doped with photoconductive compounds was investigated using two-beam coupling experiments. An asymmetric energy exchange was observed in the surface-stabilized state of the FLCs which do not possess strong electron withdrawing substituent. The effects of temperature, applied electric field and the magnitude of spontaneous polarization were investigated.

Transient properties of nonlinear refractive index change originating in photothermal effects in guest-host liquid crystal (GHLC) have been characterized by use of heat-conductive analysis. By theoretical calculations using time-dependent heat-conduction analysis, a time constant was estimated to be about 23 ms, which was in good agreement with the experimental observation (about 30 ms). The characterization technique described here is very useful for characterizing the quantitative properties of photothermal effect in GHLC.

Anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal cells mixed with one of dyestuffs of o ・ nitro ・ p ・ chloroaniline, acid brown M, acid red, azo blue, alizarin yellow R, chrome yellow, sudan I, sudan IV, fast violet B and brilliant yellow investigated on the photo-electromotive force and the theoretical analysis. The photo-electromotive force by the illumination strength of 1000 lux on the incident light of fluorescent lamp was measured. The photoelecctromotive force increased on the thin film cells compared with the thick and on the wafer having the low resistivity compared with the high. The photo-electromotive force had the highest value on the acid brow M cell among all cells. The theory of the photo-voltaic effect was considered because of establishment of the principle.

Liquid-crystalline behavior and optical property of novel ionic liquid crystals, which are surfactant complexes containing rare-earth ions, were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The rare-earth complexes were found to show a smectic A (S_A) phase in which a homeotropic structure was formed spontaneously. It is significant that the rare-earth complexes exhibit a stable liquid-crystalline phase and a simple phase transition behavior in comparison with the parent compounds without rare-earth ions. In addition, it was demonstrated that the complexes form a unique structure in the self-organization. Such rare-earth-containing liquid crystals will be expected to act as new light-emitting materials in optoelectronic device applications.

We found gelling ability of liquid-crystalline azobenzene compound I containing a chiral carbonate moiety with a higher order smectic phase. The compound functioned as a gelling agent for various organic solvents such as diethyl ether, dodecane, and 2-propanol. The AFM images of the xerogels derived from these organogels showed that fibrous aggregates form network structures. The isothermal transition from gel to sol was induced for a 2-propanol/1 gel by the photoirradiation of the gel at 366 nm, which caused trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene moiety of 1. The sol-gel transition was also induced by the irradiation at 436 nm to the resulting sol. The sol-gel phase transitions could be reversibly controlled by the trans-cis photoisomerization of 1.

Photoresponsive liquid crystalline networks were prepared by polymerization of mixtures consisting of liquid crystalline mono- and di-acrylates, and an azobenzene compound in a homogeneous glass cell at a nematic phase. The photochemical change in the birefringence was investigated by using a single pulse irradiation from a Nd:YAG laser as a light source. The magnitude of the change in the birefringence was dependent on cross-linking density, concentration of azobenzene molecules, and irradiation temperature. In addition, the thermal cis-trans reverse isomerization was influenced by the cross-linking. The optical switching behavior and photochemical properties of the liquid crystalline networks will be discussed.

Photorefractive effect was observed in a new type of polymer comprising several kinds of the substituent dissolved in low-molecular liquid crystals of E7 doped with 2,4,7-trmitro-9-fluorenone (TNF). We synthesized methacrylate copolymers with a cyanophenyl benzoate, a methoxyphenyl benzoate, a nitorophenyl benzoate or a dicyanovinylphenyl benzoate side groups and a carbazoyl ethoxy side group. Photorefractive performance was evaluated by two-beam coupling method.

We reported the photochemical switching behavior of liquid crystalline (LC) networks containing azobenzene molecules that were prepared by polymerization of mixtures of LC mono- and di-acrylates, and azobenzene molecules in a uniaxial molecular orientation. The molecular motion was found to be one of factors influencing on the optical switching behavior. On the other hand, it is expected that there is a difference in the molecular motion between smectic and nematic structures. Therefore, we attempt to control the molecular orientation of the mesogenic molecules in the networks. The effect of the molecular orientation treatment and copolymerization of various types of monomers on the molecular orientation will be discussed.

The liquid crystal micro lens (LC-ML) with a thick LC layer is studied for the molecular orientation and converging lens properties by the experiment and numerical simulation of 3D FDM. The voltage for the minimum focal length is shifted to the higher voltage side with increasing the ratio of pattern diameter, D, to LC layer thickness, t. It is considered that the region of center in the LC layer contributes dominantly the lens effect of LC-ML with small D/1 on the converging property. On the other hand, the effect of LC-ML with large D/t is given by the region close to the electrode substrate from the simulation result of LC molecular orientation.

This study describes formation of reflection-type holograms in polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) containing a photochromic moiety (azobenzene) and a mesogenic unit (tolane). Three-dimensional (3-D) images were recorded with linearly polarized Ar ion laser beams at 488 nm. We investigated the spatial frequency in image storage to produce the optical recording media with a high storage density. It was found that clear images of 3-D objects were recorded. A maximum value of the spatial resolution, which was calculated from an incident angle of writing beams reached more than 5000 lines/mm. These stored images remained unchanged after 6 months when the films were preserved at room temperature. It can be assumed that mechanism of image storage is based on change of refractive index of PLCs with trans-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene moiety.

Photochemically induced isotropic (I) domain formation in photoresponsive liquid crystal (LC) systems containing an azobenzene derivative as a photosensitive chromophore was investigated. On photoirradiation of the mixtures to cause the trans-cis isomerization of azobenzene, the formation of the I domain was observed. We considered that the domain formation resulted from the aggregation of the cis isomers. When a bent-shaped molecule was added to the LC/azobenzene mixtures, the aggregation of the cis isomers took place more effectively and photochemical phase transition was induced rapidly.

Strong optical phase conjugation from high-performance photorefractive mesogenic composites was observed by means of an experimental setup for degenerate four wave mixing. By using counterpropagating-pump geometry, we extensively investigate modulation depth of grating and reflectivity of the phase conjugation mirror, and their dependence on applied electric field and grating constant. Large modulation depth of 3.8×10^<-3> and resulting reflectivity of over 20% was successfully observed in the Bragg grating regime.

We report here a pattern formation of polymer liquid crystal film by the use of linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light followed by annealing. A periodical pattern was appeared after annealing due to the periodic reorientation of the mesogenic groups induced by the anisotropic photo-cross-linking reaction. The orientational direction was parallel to the electric vector of the incident LPUV light. The pattern pitch was -10/μm and the diffraction pattern can be observed. The diffraction efficiency was dependent on the incident polarization plane of the light.

Molecular characterization of azobenzene derivatives LB films (i.e., 'Command Surfaces') and alignment behaviors of liquid crystals regulated by the LB films have been studied by attenuated total reflection (ATR) / infrared (IR), polarized IR spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. The obtained ATR spectra show that the orientation changes have taken place between the cis and trans photo-isomerization in the LB films. Comparisons of the molecular structure of the films and photo-regulational efficiency with respect to introduced ratio of the azobenzene unit as against poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) are also investigated. In this study, we describe molecular structural alternation of photo-isomers in the LB films and the effect of contact angle for the low introduced ratio derivative shows contrary with respect to the isomerization.

New optical logic gate have been fabricated by stacking two ferroelectric liquid crystal optical diodes (LC-ODs) fabricated by polymer stabilization. The device cxhibits a strong asymmetric electrooptic performance ; for this reason, the device is referred to as a liquid crystal optical diode. The liquid crystal logic gates fabricated by stacking two LC-ODs are shown to enable the performance of logic calculations, such as AND, NAND, OR, XOR, XNOR and V-shape EO performance.

Unusual temperature dependence of layer compression modulus B has been observed in the naphtalene-based liquid crystal mixture. This unusual softening of B appears in the vicinity of the boundary where the smectic-C phase vanishes. From X-ray and layer compression measurements in the various mixing ratios of this mixture, this unusual effect is attributed to the pretransitional effect of a virtual smectic-A-smectic-C phase transition point in the Sm-A phase, which no longer appears on the thermoequilibrium phase diagram.

The layer structure of thin MHPOBC Free-Standing Film (FSF) was investigated by the transmission ellipsometry. In various films with thickness between 2 and 10 smectic layers, the quantized film thickness in SmA phase and the relation between the tilt angle and the film thickness in SmC_A phase was measured. It was found that the layer thickness in SmA phase is 2.5nm which is much smaller than that in the bulk sample measured by the X-ray study. The layer thickness seems not to depend on the tilt angle. It is considered that surface interaction of FSF may affect the layer thickness and tilt angle.

Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) has fluidity and layered structure, so that freely suspended (FS) films of it can be made in air successfully. In the freely suspended ferroelectric liquid crystal (FSFLC) films, a molecular reorientation is induced by application of an electric field parallel to the film. Electrooptic effects due to the molecular reorientation of thin FSFLC film have been reported in previous papers.^<[1,2] In this study, an electrooptic effect of a FSFLC film that was a thickness of near helical pitch was measured and texture observation was carried out by polarizing microscope.

We successfully realized a hetero structure liquid crystal film for the first time. Hetero structure liquid crystal film composed of two kinds of smectic liquid crystals has been fabricated slacking a freely suspended smectic film on another kind of smectic thin film which is spin-coated on a substrate. From the X-ray mcasnrement in a hetero structure liquid crystal film, it was confirmed that the layer structures of the individual films were maintained From thiese resolts, we can expect various novel characteristics in hybrid lilm consisting of different kinds of liquid crystallinc malerials.

Photonic phase matching was obtained using a single fundamental wave obliquely incident into ferroelectric liquid crystal helix, when both of fundamental and SH waves satisfy Bragg reflection condition. Peak position of second-harmonic generation (SHG) with respect to increasing incidence angle moved to higher temperature due to decreasing pitch and its intensity is increased with increasing reflection at both of fundamental and SH waves. Observed reflective SH wave as well as transmitted one was well explained by the Bragg reflection rule.

The electrooptical spectra of a ferroelectric liquid crystal, DOBAM BC, have been studied in free-standing films of various thickness about one helical pitch. It is found that there are two relaxation modes in the films thicker than one helical pitch. The relaxation frequency of the faster mode is less influenced by thickness of film, but that of slower mode decreases with thickness of film. We have also studied electrooptical spectra by varying temperature. The obtained spectra are discussed by those calculated theoretically for phase mode in a finite size system along helical axis.

We investigated the dielectric properties in smectic liquid crystals under pressure. The dielectric constant in the SmC phase is suppressed with increasing pressure. Based on the experimental results of the dispersion strength and relaxation frequency of the Goldstone mode, we conclude that the reported reduction of the dielectric constant in the SmC phase is mainly caused by a decrease in the relaxation frequency due to an increase in the rotational viscosity. In a ferroelectric liquid crystal, FLC-031(Chisso), we found the disappearance of the SmC phase at a pressure of about 300MPa on heating.

An electrorheology (ER) effect of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is evaluated in the relation with shear horizontal (SH) wave propagation in a liquid crystal layer between a piezoelectric ceramic plate and a glass plate. Measured phase delay in the SH wave device is related to the effective viscosity of FLC. The effective viscosity coefficient obtained in the present system contains the contribution from the director rotation induced by field application.

Dielectric constant of DHF material was measered under the frequency range between 10Hz and 100KHz. The results were evaluated by using the theory of nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy. It was found that there are distinct difference between the characteristic of thick cell and that of thin one. Thresholdless, hysteresis-free, V-shaped switching exhibits attractive characteristics for active matrix display devices. Since the V-shaped switching behavior depends on the surface condition, molecular orientation in the vicinity of the surface is important. We used attenuated total internal reflection (ATIR) technique to probe tile molecular orientation and switching near the alignment layer of a smectic liquid crystal cell showing V-shaped switching. It was shown that tile molecules near the surface collectively switch as observed in tile bulk and that the molecules near the surface form a twisted state even in the application of the field.

Orientational ordering for two types of "V-shaped" switching liquid crystals was investigated by polarized Raman scattering measurements. The measurements were performed not only under the static electric field but also in the dynamic switching process and the second and the fourth order of apparent orientational order parameters were obtained. It was suggested that one liquid crystal oriented collectively at the tip of the V-shaped switching, while the another liquid crystal orientated rather randomly. Two different types of mechanism could exhibit the same phenomenon of the V-shaped switching.

The temperature induced successive phase transitions of SC variants are observed between SC and SC_A. Ferrielectric and antiferroelectric phases emerge as subphases. And the wave number, q, characterizes these phases, such as SC_γ (3 layer structure, q=1/3) and AF (4 layer structure, q=1/4). In SC_A or AF, it is expected that we can observe the half pitch band, and can't observe the full pitch band as the Bragg reflection, because the layer structure period is 180 deg. But in antiferroelectric subphases that have q=1/(2n) with large n, we may observe the full pitch band. We analyze these possible full pitch bands by using the 4×4 matrix method.

We have performed the electro-optical measurements in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal MHPOCBC. A Landau-type theory was developed to analyze frequency dispersions in the second-order response and we observed the soft mode in the chiral SmC_α phase. This is a direct consequence that the SmC_α phase is induced by the condensation of a tilting mode. We have adopted another measurement geometry to more clearly observe the soft mode.

We have experimentally and theoretically investigated the electric field effect on the SmA-SmC_α phase transition of MHPOCBC. From the microscopic observations under electric fields and the measurements of D-E hysteresis loop and apparent tilt angle, the E (electric field)-T (temperature) phase diagram was established, in which a tricritical point was found. From the dielectric measurements under DC electric fields, a soft mode inducing the transition was observed. Furthermore, we have developed a phenomenological theory under DC fields to analyse the experimental results.

Electric field-induced effect on pattern formation of smectic-A filaments has been investigated in the binary mixture of octyloxycyanobiphenyl and dodecyl alcohol. As the mixture is cooled below its transition temperature, the smectic-A phase grows into a collection of filaments directly from an isotropic phase [1]. Without the electric-field application, these filaments, which have a constant radius, buckle three-dimensionally as they grow. When the liquid crystal samples are subjected to electric field, the three-dimensional patterns of smectic-A filaments are changed to two-dimensional periodic wavy patterns of the filaments [3]. The two-dimensional pattern is formed on a plane perpendicular to electric field. To understand the electric field-induced two-dimensional pattern formation process, the shape equations for the filaments have been derived by a variation of the sum of Gibbs free energy, curvature elastic energy, surface energy, and dielectric energy [2]. It is shown that this experimental finding can theoretically be explained within the framework of the theory.

We have investigated optical response of the vertical aligned LCD with divided domains by protrusions and/or shits. In general, the rise time of LC decreases by increasing applied voltage. However, our LCDs do not correspond to this theory. We considered that the difference between measurement and theory is caused by twist deformation, and our idea was confirmed by measurement results and simulation data.

In order to improve the response speed of nematic liquid crystal device, numerical calculation is one of the effective way to evaluate the material parameters. In general, the dynamic response of liquid crystal molecule is analyzed by equation of motion in which only rotational viscosity is taken into account. In this research, it is clarified that the conventional analysis using above mentioned equation is not valid and that the equation of motion based on Ericksen-Leslie is effective to discuss response time of various LCDs.

We have tried the analysis of the LCD cell irradiated with the YAG laser (1.06μm) to know what kinds of changes occur in it. In the present paper, We show that the PI film is decomposed and lower LC molecules are formed at the irradiated part in the LCD by the use of FT-IR microscope and microsampling MS. We have succeeded in the interpretation of the variations of a threshold value and an angle of tilting from an analytical point of view.

Various kinds of display defects occasionally occur in liquid crystal displays (LCDs), producing uneven brightness. Such display defects cause significant problems on production. In this study, we have analyzed the display defect called white spot, using of FT-IR microscope and microsampling mass spectrometer. We cannot find any differences in bulk LC layer between abnormal part and normal part. But the composition ratios of the LC are different in the interface of LC/PI film, and much more polyol is detected at abnormal part than normal part in this interface.

We investigated structural effect of starting monomers on memory properties of dual frequency driven PDLC. Among the PDLC comprising of dual frequency nematie liquid crystal DF01XX and a single monomer, HEMA or R167, the samples in which the polymer balls of micron in diameter formed the cavity in range of submicron to a few micron exhibited good memory properties. A mixture of these two monomers obviously improved the properties. These results indicate that R167 provides the homogeneous polymer network because of its solubility while HEMA enhances the fine cavity structure by micro phase separation.

We have succeeded in fabricating a novel FLCD, which exhibits symmetric electrooptic (EO) characteristic called V-shaped EO performance, by choosing appropriate photocuring conditions such as applied voltage waveforms and the concentration of photocurable mesogenic monomers. Our polymer stabilized (PS)-V-FLCD shows high contrast ratio, fast response time, continuous grayscale, and good switchability with TFTs due to free from the value of the spontaneous polarization. The LCD using this technique will be utilized for the displays that show moving video color images.

A holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (H-PDLC) has been expected as one of the potential candidates of a high brightness full color reflective display because it's unnecessary to use polarizers and color filter. However, driving voltage of HPDLC is too high to apply the practical use. Therefore, we have mainly focused on how to reduce the driving voltage of H-PDLC with high reflectance enough for practical application. In our study, manufacturing conditions and the influence of material such as liquid crystals, monomers and photo initiators were examined. As the result, we can obtain H-PDLC having low driving voltage (2Vrms/μm) and high reflectance (about 22%).

Photochemically induced change in alignment oF liquid crystals is rcviewed, focusing on two types ol alignment change: 1) change in director of liquid crystals in liquid-crystatlline phases, and 2) liquid crystal to isotropic phase transition. In both cases, a large change in retractive index is obtained and photonic applications of liquid crystals are discussed in terms of refractive-index modulation.

PI alignment layer around bumps is thicker than that at tile flat place. It causes a difference of transmittance at gray level. It is confirmed that alignment defects around the bumps shrunk in high pressing rubbing condition, and the area of defbcts depend on the rotation speed of rubbing roller. We think that the thickness of PI and the rubbing condition are key factors for alignment defecis around bumps.

The dependence of the alignment of liquid crystals around spherical spacers on liquid crystal materials has been studied. The non-polar LC mixture of PCH302 and PCH304 aligned vertically on the surface of spacers. On the other hand, the polar LC mixture, ZLI-1083 that is composed of PCIIs, showed tangential alignment on the surface. In the case of the mixture of non-polar LC and polar LC, both vertical and tangential alignments were observed. A fluorinated LC mixture also showed tangential alignment. The polarity of liquid crystal mixtures is suggested to play a significant role in determining the alignment.
