Photoresponsive diffraction gratings were obtained by applying an electric field to cholesteric liquid crystals containing an azobenzene derivative as a photoresponsive molecule. Photoisomerization of the azobenzene was caused in the cholesteric diffraction gratings by irradiation with ultraviolet or visible light. The reversible change in the grating period was observed with a polarizing optical microscope by alternating irradiation of ultraviolet and visible light at room temperature. In addition, the change in the diffraction angle was also confirmed by monitoring the probe light.

Three chiral azobenzene compounds were synthesized. A stable cholesteric phase was induced by mixing a host nematic liquid crystal and each chiral azobenzene. A twisting ability of a trans-form of the chiral azobenzene compound was found to be larger compared to that of cis-form. Next, a compensated nematic phase was prepared by mixing the chiral azobenzene, non-photochromic chiral compound in the host nematic liquid crystal. The mixture was transformed from compensated nernatic phase to cholesteric phase by the UV irradiation. Photochemically induced reversible switching of helical sense between left-handed and right-handed helices will be also discussed.

Photoresponsive liquid crystaltinc(LC) networks with macroscopically uniaxial molecular orientation were prepared by photopolymerization of mixtures of LC mono- and di-acrylates, and an azobenzene monomer in a homogeneous glass cell at a ncmatic phase. Formation and removal of grating were investigated by irradiating two writing beams with an argon ion laser. Efficiency of grating was dependent on the cross-linking density and the content of the azobenzene monomer. The response time of formation and removal of the grating will be discussed.

Photochemical phase transition behavior of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) induced by two-photon excitation of a photosensitive dye was studied. Bis-donor substituted stilbene was synthesized as a two-photon absorbing (TPA) chromophore, and its one-photon and two-photon induced isomerization behavior was investigated in a solution and in a LC matrix. Irradiation of a stilbene/host LC mixture with pico-second laser pulse at 680 nm (20 ps, fwhm) induced the change in the phase structure of the LC. Since the stilbene dye show no one-photon absorption at this wavelength, the observed change in the LC phase structure results from the trans-cis isomerization of stilbene induced by two-photon excitation.

We describe the synthesis of a new photoreactive polymer liquid crystal (PLC) and alighment of the PLC film induced by linearly polarized (LP) UV irradiation and thermal treatment. The synthesized PLC showed nematic phase. When the irradiation time was short, the photoinduced negative dichroism was enhanced in a direction perpendicular to the electric vector E of the LP-UV light after annealing at 130℃. On the other hand, the alignment direction changed parallel to E of the LP-UV light when the irradiation time was long.

We have performed precise measurements of the third-order dielectric constant in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal MHPOCBC. In the vicinity of the SmA-SmC phase transition point, an anomalous increase of it was observed. We have developed a Landau theory taking into account the pretransitional fluctuations and show that the fluctuation can contribute to the third-order response. The anomalous behavior near the transition point was discussed on the basis of the theoretical results.

Molecular structures and orientation of tolan and trans-azobenzene, which are models of the cores of liquid-crystal molecules, dissolved in liquid crystals have been determined by proton NMR. Spectral analysis is quite difficult for molecules with ten protons. Therefore initial spectral parameters have been obtained by analyzing integral curves by means of genetic algorithm. Final parameters have been determined by least-squares calculations on absorption frequencies. Both compounds take planar molecular structures in liquid crystals. The structure of the phenyl group of each compound is not significantly different from that in the gas phase and in the crystal. The rotational barriers of phenyl groups in liquid crystals are larger than those in the gas phase. This is also the case for biphenyl and phenyl benzoate and is ascribed to environmental effects of liquid crystals.

Propagation characteristics of the 0th order symmetric (S_0) mode shear horizontal (SH) wave are described under the construction of a cell containing smectic liquid crystal, which are measured as a parameter of temperature. An abrupt loss change and a maximum phase delay are observed at the vicinity of N -SmA phase transition temperature. The measured propagation loss and phase delay are related to the viscosity and finite shear elasticity in the smectic A phase.

The structure and switching of five antiferroelectric mesogens are studied by NTP-MD simulation. The conformations of the end chains in the smectic phase are compared with those at an isolated single molecule estimated by the method of molecular orbitals, where the bending angle of the chiral chain as well as the angle of the achiral one is shown to be enhanced. The tilt angles obtained here are in well agreement with the experimental ones. The response of the anticlinic alignment to the transverse electric is also tested.

In order to discuss the molecular fluctuation in chiral smectic phases, the temperature dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time (T_1) was measured using ^<13>C-NMR in MHPOBC and DOBAMBC. In the SmC_A phase of MHPOBC, the relaxation time (T_1) of phenyl group decreased with increasing temperature until it attained a minimum at 95℃, and then increased. At, the temperature of T_1 minimum, the correlation time of the molecular motion, which dominates T_1, could be estimated at about 10^<-9> s.

We have developed a simple analytical system using light scattering method for rapid measurements of phase transition temperature of liquid crystals (LC). Extinction of transmitted laser light due to strong light scattering in the LC phases was clearly observed for various molecular species. This system will be applicable to develop a batch test system for the LC molecular synthesis.

We have investigated the cell thickness dependence of the electrooptic response and the dielectric behavior in an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (R)-4-(1-methylheptyloxy-carbonyl)phenyl 4'-octyl biphenyl-4-carboxylate, ((R)-MHPBC). In a thin cell (3.9 μm), a dielectric relaxation of a ferrielectric phase was observed even in the temperalure region of the AF and SmC_A phases of a thick cell (29.5 μm). In the electrooptic measurements, the thresholdless behavior was observed in the thin cell, though the threshold of the field-induced phase transition was clearly recognized in the thick cell.

The phase diagrams of binary systems of ANBC-14-n-tetradecane and ANBC-14-n-hexadecane were studied, where ANBC-14 is 4'-n-alkoxy-3'-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ANBC-n) with n=14. It was found that the phase diagrams of those binary systems with respect to the apparent average numbur of paraffinic carbon atoms n, which is from both the paraffin and the alkoxy chain of ANBC-14, is very similar to that of pure ANBC-n system versus n. This indicates that the alkoxy chain behaves in part like the solvent in lyotropic liquid crystals.

The smectic layers rotate by applying an asymmetric electric field. We develop a system to measure simultaneously the polarizing microscopy and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and have investigated this phenomenon. The rotation angle of the Bragg spot was approximately equal to that of the stripe texture. Bragg spots split in azimuthal direction, and it means that layers can rotate with keeping horizontal chevron structure.

An orientaional order of non-mesogenic molecules in a nematic phase has been investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. 4-Hexyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (6OCB) and non-mesogenic molecules, pyrene, naphthalene and p-difluorobenzene, were approximated to soft ellipsoids with three semi-axes. Two tensor order parameters were evaluated to specify the orientational order of each component. The effect of molecular size on the orientational order was discussed.

A synchrotron time resolved microbeam X-ray diffraction was applied to the direct and real time measurement of the local layer response of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal. The transient local layer deformation process related to the field induced phase transition was observed. In the ferroelectric (FE) to antiferroelectric(AFE) phase transition process, the layer structure changed from the bookshelf to the quasi-bookshelf within 0.3ms and the transient structure of horizontal chevron appeared. For the AFE to FE transition, the reverse layer deformation occurred within 0.04ms.

We study molecular theoretically the nematic phase of dimeric molecules composed of two rod like mesogens and hydrocarbon spacer; especially focussing our attention on the role of spacer in the nematic-isotropic phase transition. The experimental finding s that the transition temperature Tc decreases but the transition entropy Δ Σc increases with the length of spacer can be explained qualitatively.

In the smectic phase of dimers with a bent conformation; n(O)AM5AM(O)n(n=12,14,16), we studied texture of the mesophase using a polarizing microscope, and measured switching currents and optical birefringences. Consequently we confirmed that all the compounds show antfferroelectric phases. Based on these results, the layer structures were determined, and it was found that the structure of 12AM5AM12 is different from 140OAM5AMO14.

The molecular dynamics simulations have been performed in order to calculate the interacton in [Spacer/liquid cryslal] interfaces. On the case of a random mixture model there was no tilt angel to the surface of spacer. But on the case of single liquid crystal which is most interactive to the surface of spacers an obvious orientation was obsorved. I propose a mechanismi of orientation on a surface of spacer that such a liquid crystal leads the total structure.

Helical structures of smectic-A phase in an isotropic phase have been found in the mixture of octyloxycyano-biphenyl and dodecyl alcohol doped with cholesteryl nonanoate (CN). In the last few decades, various helical structures of chiral lipid bilayers have been found by many researchers [1]. These structures are made from twisting or rolling up of planar bilayer sheets around corners or edges. It is noted that the smectic-A helical filaments observed here are made from reeling up of tubes instead of rolling up of sheets. In this presentation structure and stability of the helical smectic-A filaments with CN are reported.

We have determined sets of coarse-grained potentials for nCB(4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl) starting from the united atom pair potential of the OPLS force field. As a coarse-grained model, we employed a hybrid Gay-Berne/Lennard-Jones model consisting of a rigid core and a chain of spheres. Using the coarse-grained potentials, we have carried out MI) simulations of 5CB to examine the parameter dependency of the structure, the density of the ordered state and the transition temperature. We found that if the length of the rigid core is kept constant, the isotropic phase becomes favored with increasing the aspect ratio of the core. This can be explained as the effect of the thickness of the tail part.

Layer compression modulus measurements have been conducted in the vicinity of the smectic-C -smectic-I and smectic-C_A -smectic-I_A phase transitions of chiral smectic liquid crystals. Layer compression modulus shows no pretransitional softening near the smectic-C -smectic-I phase transition as expected. Unlike the usual smectic-hexatic phase transition, we observed evident critical softening of layer compression modulus near the smectic-C_A -smectic-I_A phase transition.

Heat capacities of the lyotropic liquid crystal formed in the binary system, non-ionic surfactant octaoxyethylene-n-hexadecyl ether (C_<16>E_8) / water, were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter between 290 and 370 K. Samples were prepared in different concentrations of the C_<16>E_8 surfactant in water. In the liquid crystal region, the hexagonal (H_I) - cubic (V_I) and cubic (V_I) - lamellar (L_α) phase transitions were observed, and the phase transition temperatures depended on the concentration. The hexagonal - cubic and cubic - lamellar phase transitions are of first-order, as shown by the existence of biphasic regions. Entropy and enthalpy changes at each phase transition were determined.

Electric field-induced director orientation of smectic-A phase in an isotropic phase has been studied with a polarizing microscope using the binary mixture of octyloxycyanobiphenyl and dodecyl alcohol. Electric field is applied to the samples in which spherical smectic-A domains with and without defects in an isotropic phase are observed. Field-induced orientation of smectic-A director is observed for spherical smectic-A domains with defects but not observed for those without defects below electric field strength of 1.0 V/μm. The threshold field for the smectic-A director orientation is found to be dependent on the frequency of applied electric field.

Heat capacities of cubic mesogen ANBC-22 were measured with an adiabatic calorimeter in the 14-485 K range, and with a DSC in the 193-483 K range. Phase transitions were observed between the adjacent phases in the phase sequence, Crl-Cr2-SmC-Cub I -Cub II-I. The enthalpy (170 J mol^<-1>) and entropy (0.37 J K^<-1> mol^<-1>) gained at the Cub I -Cub II phase transition at 453.8 K were extremely small.

A new lechnique for directly moniloring the intluence of boundary condition on molccular dynamics by using a transferred ferroelectric liquid crystal film has been proposed. The in-plane polarization reversal current of the transferred film has been measured using an interdigitated electrode on the substrate as a function of film thickness and temperature. It is found that polarization reversal behavior in a thin film (<200 layers) is influenced by anchoring effect of the substrate. The polarization reversal currenl can be observed even above a Curie lemperature, which is interpreled to be due to the surface clinic effect of the molecules at the air-liquid crystal interface.

In the twisted nematic liquid-crystal (TN-LC) cells with rubbed alignment films of relatively weak anchoring strength, the twist angles decrease after the LC material was injected into the empty cells. We have measured the time dependence of the twist angle in the TN-LC cells. The twist angle rapidly decreases in the TN-LC cells using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film with lower saponification degree. However, the same twist angle can be retained before and after the voltage of 15V was applied for 12h and removed.

Periodical texture at polarization reversal in thick cell of ferroelectric liquid crystal has been studied. This stripe texture is tilted to the smectic layer and the tilt direction depends on polarity of applied voltage. A peak of polarity reversal current and a dip of transmitted light intensity are observed under the polarity reversal of applied voltage. The current peak is shorter than the dip of transmitted light intensity. The reversed polarization amount between the current peak is more than 90% of total reversed polarization amount. This result supports that the origin of the periodical texture is stripelike array of 2π walls.

An orientational order of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) molecules at the interface between polyfumarates and NLC was evaluated by measurering a change of the nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature, T_<NI> in the polyfumarate-coated convex-flat substrate sandwich cell. T_<NI> at the convex-flat substrate interface became lower with an increase of side chain mobility of polyfumarate contacting with NLC. It was concluded that thermal molecular motion associated with the side chain part has a great influence on NLC surface orientational order.

We demonstrate a new application to evaluate the refractive indices and those wave-length dispersions by using the ellipsometry. To get information of the bulk in LC, we used especially the transmission ellipsometry. By mesuring the phase difference Δ and the angle of amplitude ratio Ψ, and fitting numerical calculation based on the 4×4 matrix method, it is found that the refractive indices and their wave-length dispersion can be evaluated quantitatively.

The orientational fluctuations in a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal were successfully observed with a high-speed video camera. From the series of images obtained, first the spatial Fourier transformation of each image was computed and then the time correlation function at each wave number was calculated. A theory to analyse the results was developed and by using it the ratios of the clastic constant to the viscosity were obtained. In addition, the static orientational defects were investigatd.

Self-organizing molecular semiconductors, which enjoy interesting natures of both of the liquid crystal and the organic semiconductor, exhibit excellent carrier transport properties characterized by a fast ambipolar mobility up to the order of 10^<-2> cm^2/Vs due to the molecular orientation in self-alignment manner. In contrast to the conventional amorphous semiconductor, electronic and/or optical anisotropy is one of unique natures of this type of materials. We studied the anisotropy with planer-structured devices consisting of the finger-type electrodes, in which the organic semiconductor is homogeneously aligned. We prepared different samples where the organic semiconductor was oriented to parallel, perpendicular, or random to the electrodes. In any case, no molecular orientation layer was applied to avoid additional effect of the layer on carrier injection. We measured steady and transient dark/photo currents in different mesophases. As a result, obvious conductive anisotropy was observed. The maximum currents ratio under the same field intensity reaches 10:1 according to the molecular orientation.

An optical writing was demonstrated in homogeneous Liquid crystal (LC) cells using poly (vinyl cinnamate) (PVCi) and rubbed PVA film coated substrates. The cell is irradiated with the linearly polarized UV light at 45° to the homogeneous director toward the PVCi substrate under the voltage application. We measured the twist angle with Stokes Parameter method (SPM). The twist angle in the area exposed with the UV light under the voltage application is larger than that under the no voltage application. Moreover, non-uniform alignment is observed in the area with the optical writing under the voltage application.

We have evaluated temperature dependence of physical properties in a binary mixture of fluorinated nematic liquid crystals with different substituents. One of the liquid crystal has large dielectric anisotropy and the other's is low dielectric anisotropy (approximately zero). We found that the relation between dielectric anisotropy and order parameter of the mixture changed from linear to second order by changing the mixing ratio.

In our previous work, we have shown that molecular dynamics (MD) simulation can obtain qualitatively the same orientational behavior of liquid crystal (LC) as experimental results by using simple LC/poly-acrylate interface model. In this work, we apply MD simulation to more practical system, interface between mixed LC and polydiacrylate with different alkyl sidechain length or without any sidechain. The system consists of isotropic RO571 (540 molecules, 11085 atoms) and amorphous polydiacrylate film (one chain, 7500 - 8000 atoms). Polydiacrylate is treated as liner chian model. LC have aligned during 12nsec MD run in almost all system, but the tilt angle of them is identically almost 30°. The result of analyzing the interface structure, the distribution of orientational order parameter near the interface, shows that network model for polydiacrylate is seemed to be necessary. This work has been carried out as ASET project supported by NEDO.

Molecular orientation of nematic liquid crystal in a polyphase electric field has been investigated. A circular texture due to rotating field was observed. In addition, possible orientation of the molecule in the polyphase electric field was discussed.

Relationship between twist angle and cell thickness are measured in 90° TN cells with different cell thickness. Rubbed Pl and PMMA alignment film coated substrates are used. The twist angle appreciably decreases in the thinner cell and gradually decreases in the thicker cell. Moreover, the thinner cell which has larger torque in the twisted LC bulk shows weaker anchoring energy than that of thicker cell.

Drift mobilities of impurity ions in nematic liquid crystal cells have been estimated from a peak time in current transients measured by a voltage reversal method. A Monte-Carlo computer simulation has been carried out to show that the peak time is dependent on the frequency of the polarity-reversal voltage pulses and that the drift mobilities measured in this way are overestimated. A method is suggested to correctly measure both drift mobilities and diffusion constants of impurity ions by fitting computer-generated tramsients to experimentally obtained transients.

Relation between optical anisotropy of an alignment film, polyimide SE150(Nissan Chem.), and molecular alignment quality of liquid crystals was examined. The alignment films were treated by oblique irradiation of unpolarized UV light with and without rubbing process. It can be said that the sign of the optical anisotropy of the film surface that contributes to the molecular alignment of liquid crystal may be opposite to that of the inside of the film.

It is important both for basic science and device applications to investigate the static and dynamic director orientation in a thin nematic liquid crystal (NLC) slab. Optical and electrical measurement methods are generally used to determine the director orientation or distribution. It is to be expected that deuterium NMR spectroscopy combined with simultaneous insitu observation of the optical transmittance should give us a good understanding of the director orientation for a thin NLC slab because the former is controlled by the sum of the spectrum over each position in the slab and the latter by the optical anisotropy averaged over the slab. This combined method is used to investigate the director distribution in a thin NLC slab.

Carrier generation and transport properties in a discotic liquid crystal have been studed using a time-of Hight Icchnique. By using two types of electrode configurations, taht is, a sapdwich and interdigitated clectrodes, the anisotoropy of the carrier mobility and dark conductivily has also been estimated. The carrier mobility in the directron perpendicular to the columnar axis in the discotic phase has been estimated to be smaller than that parallel to the columnar axis. The anisotropy in the dark conductivity is also confirmed in the discotic phase.

It is experimentally demonstrated that selecting an appropriate wave length of the incident light is required to avoid the Mauguin Minimum condition in which the actual twist angle cannot be estimated by optical measurement. The all of the optical component such as the glass substrates, indium thin oxide electrode films, alignment films and liquid crystal itself play an important role in the optical polarization state of the outgoing light, therefore we re-examined the measurement method for the evaluation of the anchoring strength and proposed a modified method by using multi-wavelength laser.

Using polarizing microscopy, we investigated the deveopment of banded texture under low frequency electric field on liquid crystalline solutions of poly(γ-benzyl L-glutamate)(PBLG). We find a steady state striped texture is produced in some frequency region. Here we present a model for the spatial distribution of molecular orientation, consistent with the experimental results of time resolved optical pattern in the steady state striped texrure under an AC electric field.

We performed cross-sectional observation of our bistable polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The observation revealed that the PDLCs contained polymer rich and liquid crystal rich region adjacent to the UV irradiated side (top) and the opposite side (bottom), respectivly. Furthermore, sub-micron sized cavities were observed in the polymer rich region of the PDLC. These specific structures might effect the bistable switching characteristics.

We investigated the effect of alkyl side chain length of polymers on anchoring strength, which was measured by high-electric-field technique, at LC/Polymer interfaces. It's turned out that anchoring strength of LC/Polymer interface decreases with increasing the length of alkyl side chain of polymers and driving voltage of PNLC made by UV irradiation of said monomers also decreases with increasing the side chain length. Moreover, when using monomer with alkyl side chain of 11 carbon atoms, we observed anchoring transition temperature in which LC alignment transferred from homogeneous to homeotropic alignment and anchoring strength drastically changed.

Physical properties of fluoro-substituted 4-cyanophenyl 4-alkyl benzoates have been measured. Dielectric anisotropy of these compounds were increased by fluoro-substitution. These viscosity were not increased. And thus, the LC mixtures for STN-LCD with low voltage, fast response time and furthermore good frequency behavior were obtained.

X-ray diffraction and miscibility studies were conducted for homologous series of antiferroelectric MHPOBC and femoelectric MH/POBC liquid crystal molecules. From the X-ray analysis, we have found that n-C_6H_<13>-chain of MHPOBC more tilted from the molecular long axis than that of MH/POBC, indicating that the ester group next to the chiral carbon of MHPOBC affected to the unique conformational structure.

Thermo-optical characteristics based on the S_A-N phase transition indused by laser irradiation were investigated for (side-chain liquid crystalline copolymer: LCcop/liquid crystals:LOs/chiral dopant/dye) composite systems with a homeotropically orientated cell. The laser thermo-recording to the composite systems was carried out with He-Ne laser at room temperature and both high contrast and stable memory were achieved.
