The experimental apparatus are indicated in Fig. I (P; Quartz spring, S; Staple fibers holded by the supporter E and F, K; Cathetometer, C; Thermocouple, A; Ampere meter). The inintial length and initial tension are measured by the initial elongation of the quartz spring P. The shrinkages (mm/cm) of the fibers are observed by the depression of the end of quartz sping. In holding the fibers it is steeped in the 0, 1.2, 5.2, 10.3, 15.3, 20.6, 30.1% solutions of NaOH until to the ultimate length, and washed in water until the shrinkage ceases. But in the steeping in 10.3% NaOH solution the fibers swell and dissolve, so that the time of steeping is shorten to 30 sec., and in the steeping in the 15.3, 20.6, and 30.1 % NaOH solutions it is washed in saturated NaCl solution before washing in water, because it is dissolved by the dilution. The mean results are indicated by the Fig 2.
