For progress in breeding for barley scald resistance, a number of varieties originated from various regions of the world were screened by inoculation test using the pathogen cultures collected from the Hokuriku district. Effective genotypes to several different cultures were found in Turkish and Ethiopian varieties, which had several genes located on chromosome 3. Considerable pathogenic specialization was also confirmed in the pathogen populations. In order to improve the yield potential in a rice variety, vascular bundle system was extensively studied in Asian varieties, and the remarkable difference was detected between Indica-and Japonica-type and also within Japonica-type. Such differences were considered to be new selection objective for higher yield potential. Against the remarkable natural disasters in 2004 in Niigata prefecture, the author suggested new prediction method of damage in rice field using satellite image analysis through the joint work with different research field in Niigata University.

Hot water treatment at 60℃ for 10 min accelerated the germination of the seeds of japonica rice cultivars, Moeminori and Bekoaoba. Dry heat treatment at 50℃ for 7days decreased the germination percentage of Bekoaoba. However, hotwater treatment rather induced germination. It was suggested that hot water treatment was useful to improve the germinability of rice cultivars that were damaged by dry heat treatment. Hot water treatment also increased the germination percentage of the indica rice cultivars with strong dormancy, Takanari and Hokuriku193, though the promotion effect of germinability was weaker than that of dry heat treatment.

In Joetsu area, seed yield of soybean variety Enrei in the plots of four lines of narrow-row-dense-planting culture (low and middle densities) were not less than that in the plot of two ridges, when sowing took place from middle to late June after barley. Seed yield were increased due to higher pod number, leaf area index at flowering and dry matter production after flowering. However, lodging resistance varied from low to heavy. To prevent from heavy harvest work, it is inferred that development of new variety and cultivating method to develop lodging resistance is needed.

We examined the cultivation characteristic and quality of Sweet corn of 52 cultivars in Nobeyama plateau. As a result, these Sweet corn cultivars were unsuitable for cultivation in the Nobeyama plateau. 0n the other hand, nine cultivars were high percentage of Brix as 16% or more. And these cultivars are considered to be the cultivars which can expect the high quality sweet corn production in Nobeyama plateau. Therefore, two cultivars were low percentage of emergence as 60% or less. Seven cultivars had the unsuitable timing of flowering time and a silking stage. Three cultivars were high percentage of malformation ears.

Tests to evaluate the agronomic traits of two new breeding lines of rye, which were bred from commercial cultivars at Shinsyu University, were carried out. The new breeding lines, SUR-5 and SUR-6, were selected by extremely early maturity, low height, and high number of stems. The new lines showed an earlier heading date and had more stems than other commercial cultivars. Their dry-matter yield was higher than the commercial cultivar 'raitaro' ,but the heading date was the same.

A new soybean variety "Suzuhomare" was developed at the Nagano Vegetable and Ornamental Crop Experiment Station in 2012. It was selected from across between "Tousanl79" and "Tousan-kei U24". "Suzuhomare" is a medium to late maturing variety with determinate growth type having purple flowers and a triangular leaflet. Because its high lodging resistance, mechanical harvesting aptitude is excellent. It is resistant to SMV strains -A, -B, -C, -D and -E, but susceptible to soybean cyst nematode. The seeds are large in size and the color of seed coats are yellow. Protein content is high and its tofu (bean curd) processing ability is higher than that of "Tachinagaha". It is also suitable for miso (fermented soybean paste) and natto (fermented soybean). "Suzuhomare" was recommended to Nagano Prefecture in 2012.
