We examined whether injury caused by continuous cropping of cabbage could be reduced by planting sweet corn on the Nobeyama plateau. We used 41 cultivars of cabbage in this study. It increased the weight of heads of cabbage in 10 cultivars with significant difference and decreased club root-disease of cabbage in 19 cultivars with significant difference by planting sweet corn. The effectiveness of planting sweet corn showed a varietal difference.

We examined the effect of vine training on the yield and the flower-visiting insect of scarlet runner bean. The insect survey involved the control plot (inside and outside the tunnel) and the vine plot (inside the tunnel). The yield survey involved the control and training plots. As a result, the number of flower-visiting insects and yield were higher outside compared with inside the tunnel. Inside the tunnel, the yield of the control plot showed higher than that of the training plot, and the number of flower-visiting insects showed no difference at control between the plots.

A new rice cultivar Ichihomare was registered as the recommended variety of Fukui prefecture in 2017. Therefore, we selected six SSR markers (RM9, RM8208, RM4691, RM7277, RM7452, RM1320） to identify the 14 recommended rice varieties by two polymorphisms, and we improved the previous SSR maker set.

Allelic variations of partial sequence of fructan: fructan 1-fructosyltransferase (1-FFT) gene among 43 Japanese barley cultivars and 5 foreign barley cultivars were investigated. Alignment analysis of the 540 bp region of 1-FFT gene revealed that there were 15 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) including four SNPs with amino acid substitution. The barley cultivars were classified into five groups by phylogenetic analysis. Most of the cultivars with superior snow resistance fell into the same group.

Effect of collection time and low-temperature treatment period on endodormancy breaking of bulbil in Elatostema involucratum Franch. & Sav. (standard Japanese name; Uwabamisou) was investigated. The bulbils were collected three times from September to November. The period of low temperature treatment (at 2°C) was applied for 0–80 days for bulbils collected in September and October and for 0–60 days for bulbils collected in November. Among the bulbils collected in September and October, the sprouting rate at 21 days after planting was 90% or more by low-temperature treatment for 80 days. In bulbils collected in November, the sprouting rate at 21 days after planting was 90% or more by low-temperature treatment for 60 days. The collection of bulbils in November was not efficient because the bulbils had fallen onto the surface from the stem. Therefore, the endodormancy of bulbils collected in September and October was sufficiently broken by low temperature treatment at 2°C for 80 days.
