The importance of pilots’ multitasking ability will be increased in the 5th and future generation
fighters’ cockpit, the rich information environment than ever before. The measuring of pilots’
multitasking ability will be important to assess and to enhance the ability.
In this paper, we compared pilots’ multitasking ability to pilot cadets and non-pilots under variable
task priority. When playing “Space Fortress”, a complex video game-like research tool of multitasking,
pilots and pilot cadets showed better psychomotor performance than non-pilots. Pilots also showed a
tendency to superior response accuracy under high multitasking demand.
These results suggest that pilots multitasking ability can be measured with Space Fortress.
