For structural determination of molten salts, X- ray and neutron diffractions are the most powerful methods. Computer simulations represented by Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics methods have become more and more useful for analysing the experimental data. Particularly, 3-dimensional structure which could not be obtained by diffraction experiments alone is easily deduced with the help of the simulations. Recent studies on molten CsCl mainly by McGreevy's group and on molten LiNO3 and RbNO3 by the author's group are introduced as examples, in which diffraction experiments and computer simulations are combined for the structural analyses.

An electron microscopic investigation on Ti-Ba-Ca-Cu-O complex oxide systems reveals new ordered-intergrowth phases, a solid- solid reaction between the 2212 and 2223 phases, and a superstructure modulation in the 2201 phase. One of problems with the no- Ca containing 2201 crystal which shows significant Tc variation from non- superconductor to 80K, was studied in terms of superstructure modulation. The superstructure, having a vector q=± [3/14, ±1/14, ±1], occured on {310} planes, and its disordered structure results in diffuse ring patterns in electron diffaction patterns. It was found that a crystal which shows less diffuse scattering tends to have a higher Tc value.

The molecular aggregation structure in a monolayer on the water surface is different from the generally accepted concept. The surface pressure- area isotherm for a monolayer represents two kinds of aggregating processes of isolated domains formed right after spreading a solution on the water surface. Formation of crystalline or amorphous monolayers depends on the subphase temperature below and above the melting point of the monolayer, respectively, being irrespective of the magnitude of surface pressure. To obtain the LB film with well organized and ordered structure, the monolayer composed of amphiphile with a larger intermolecular force has to be deposited onto the substrate at the surface pressure where the monolayer is homogeneous.

A new method is proposed for the composition analysis of GaAs/Alx Ga1-x As superstructure using the equal thickness fringe in the transmission electron microscope image. The position of the equal thickness fringe observed at the edge of a cleaved chip shifts depending on the Al composition. The compositional dependence on the fringe shift can be explained by the dynamical electron diffraction theory. The compositional abruptness at the heterointerface and the compositional fluctuation in the thin layer can be successfully evaluated with a high spatial resolution of 0.4nm [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 26, 770 (1987) ] .
