The purpose of this study is to organize information on the characteristics of male caregivers perceived by care managers and to discuss support for male caregivers. We searched for community general support centers and home service providers on their internet websites that are located in the three prefectures in the Hokuriku region. All nursing and care facilities in each prefecture in the region were included in the survey and postal self-completion questionnaires were sent to care managers who worked for the facilities. As a result, 373 codes were extracted as the characteristics of male caregivers perceived by care managers. The codes were grouped into twenty subcategories and further into seven categories. The seven categories are “seriously working on care giving”, “isolated life of caregiving”, “problems related to caregiving”, “dif ficulties related to housework”, “problems related to occupations and finance”, “Use of various services”, and “difficulties related to family relationships”. Male caregivers tend to work too hard on caregiving which can lead to them living an isolated life and having many and various problems. The characteristics vary depending on their relationship with the care recipient (spouse or parent) they help. It is necessary to support male caregivers on the basis of these results.

The current study investigated the influences of self-perceived burden on depressive state in middleaged dialysis patients, and the influences of the physical function and economic situation on their selfperceived burden and depressive state. An anonymous self-report survey was conducted on 224 hemodialysis patients between 40 and 65 years old. Self-perceived burden was measured by the Self- Perceived Burden Scale, depressive state was measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and the physical function was measured by the KDQOL-SF. The influences of self-perceived burden, physical function and economic situation on their depressive state were analyzed via path analysis using structural equation modeling. Of the 210 patients whose data were analyzed, males and females accounted for 63.8% and 36.2%, respectively. The average age was 55.9 years. The analysis showed that the path coefficient from self-perceived burden to depressive state was 0.184 (p<0.001), that from physical function or economic situation to self-perceived burden was -0.104 (ns), -0.182 (p<0.05), respectively, and that from physical function or economic situation to depressive state was -0.282 (p<0.001), -0.313 (p<0.001), respectively. These results indicated that the economic situation increased the patients’ depressive state and self-perceived burden, and that self-perceived burden affected the degree of depressive state. Future studies should investigate whether the same influences hold true for hemodialysis patients in different age groups.

Aim : The aim of this research is to survey the relationship between the practical home care nursing skills that managers of home-visit nursing offices (the offices) expect new nursing school graduates to have mastered and the intentions of those managers to hire them.

Method : We conducted a survey by mailing an anonymous self-administered questionnaire to the managers of 498 Stations in Japan’s “A” Prefecture. (Recovery rate 34.1%, Number of valid responses 168 cases) Chi-square test was conducted between the attainment of the practical home care nursing skills in 73 items such as basic attitudes and nursing practice suited to each client and their intentions to hire new graduates.

Result : The results showed that the managers with no intention to hire were significantly higher in a ratio to expect attainment in 40 out of 73 items in practical home nursing skills than managers with the intention to hire. Among the 32 items of nursing practice suited to each client, the similar result was confirmed in 25 items, to “be able to understand the influence that intervention gave to the client in the condition of acute change”. The managers with the intention to hire were higher in a ratio to expect that students are able to address their individual development needs through independent study.

Conclusion : These results suggested it may be necessary to improve the achievement of practical home care nursing skills in basic nursing education.
