Global warming is a worldwide issue to be solved and introducing hydrogen originated from abundant renewable energy that exists widely in the world is considered to be one solution strategy. Based on this scheme to import hydrogen as a new energy source, the development of 5 t/day hydrogen liquefaction system and large scale hydrogen storage system has been fulfilled. The hydrogen liquefaction system has been installed in Kawasaki Heavy Industries Harima Works in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan and system performance, reliability, maintainability and so on has been demonstrated. The tank test facility of storage capacity 1,000 m
3 has also been installed to develop vacuum insulation technology and tank structural technology including GFRP tank saddle for 3,000 m
3 class storage system. With respect to the cryogenic insulation performance, multilayer insulation (MLI) test has been fulfilled at a laboratory scale and has elucidated the boil off rate less than 0.1%/day of liquefied hydrogen equivalent. For efficient liquefied hydrogen transfer, development of submerged hydrogen pump has been also fulfilled and the stable liquefied hydrogen transfer with enough pump head of 0.18 MPa has been confirmed. The results are comprehensively examined and the feasibility of hydrogen liquefaction and storage system aiming for the future large scale hydrogen energy storage, transportation and utilization application has been clarified.
