We investigated the genetic divergence and population structure of the flightless supralittoral weevil, Aphela gotoi (CHUJO et Voss, 1960). A 598-bp fragment of the mitochondrial COi gene was sequenced from 32 specimens representing seven distinct populations in coastal areas of Honshu and Shikoku, Japan. Our molecular analyses revealed the existence of two major, geographically isolated lineages within A. gotoi, suggesting that gene flow in this species has been inhibited by the Japanese archipelago between the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.

Metapocyrtus (Trachycyrtus) hederaephilus YOSHITAKE, sp. nov., is described from Mie Prefecture, Central Honshu, Japan. In addition to general taxonomic information, DNA barcodes were provided from four individuals of the new species. This species occurred suddenly in a farm of ornamental plants in Mie Prefecture and caused serious damages to the English ivy, Hedera helix (Araliaceae). The larvae feed on roots while the adults feed on leaves above ground. This species may not be native to Japan but an invasive species from the Philippines, though the invasion route of this species to the country is unclear.

This is the first part of the taxonomic study on the species group of S. cephalotes SHARP of the genus Stenus LATREILLE, 1797. First, eleven species groups of Stenus that I created in 1988 to 1990 and their related problems are discussed. Second, the species group of S. cephalotes, together with its diagnostic characters and component species are discussed in detail. Eight species (i.e., S. bosatsu NAOMI; S. hagoromo NAOMI; S. intermixtus PUTHZ; S. uneme NAOMI; S. hime NAOMI et PUTHZ; S. kajika NAOMI et PUTHZ; S. satsuki NAOMI et PUTHZ; and S. hotei NAOMI), which have hitherto been regarded as members of the subgenus Hemistenus under a traditional classification of Stenus, are here all considered to belong to the species group of S. cephalotes. Third, ten known species are redescribed in detail; and six new species are described from Japan as follows: S. matobai from Wakayama Pref; S. coffeatus from Kochi Pref; S. hoshinai from Ishikawa Pref; S. ferus from Mie Pref; S. acutatus from Mie Pref; and S. jamesashei from Shiga Pref.

Two new species of the genus Phallosphaera ROHDENDORF, 1938, P. barioensis sp nov. and P. amicoides sp. nov. are described and keyed. They possess a protuberance on 5th stemite in male, which is a synapomorphic character for considering Phallosphaera as a monophyletic genus. The male genitalia show these two new species closely allied to P. gravelyi (SENIOR-WHITE, 1924) and P. amica MA, 1964, respectively.

The members of this new genus are distinctive in configuration of head which is narrowed posteriad, vestigial eyes and abdomen provided with a short though remarkable longitudinal carina at the middle of base in each tergite and stemite from 3rd to 7th segments. Besides, two new species belonging to the new genus are described under the names N. moritai and N. iyaense. The former was obtained at the Sanpuku Pass on the Southern Japanese Alps in central Honshu, and the latter was found in the upper hypogean zone at eastern Shikoku, Japan.

The adults are well characterized by the brown-marked clypeus, pale brown antenna! flagellum, black-banded forewing and basally whitish hind tibia in both sexes and the basally whitish hind femur in the female. The larvae are gregarious leaf-feeders on Cerasus max:imowiczii and C. nipponica var. kurilensis (Rosaceae) and the late instar larvae are recognized by the entirely black head and thoracic legs and largely black dorsum of the tenth abdominal segment. Arge cerasus probably has two or three generations a year. Cerasus max:imowiczii is recorded as a new host for Spinarge prunivora HARA and SHINOHARA, 2006.
