In this paper, we describe the development of a method for estimating the appropriate time for inspection and repair (i.e., the optimized time that minimizes total costs), by introducing stochastic models of a given physical deterioration equation. We focus on a deterioration equation that has a power law relationship with time. The stochastic models assumed reflect the differences of the initial conditions and environments. The method consists of three elements: derivation and selection of a stochastic model, sequential combination of stochastic models that have different deterioration mechanisms, and minimization of the expected value of the cost. As we consider cases in which the cost of the inspection is very high and for which the mere accumulation of inspection data is not enough -underground lifeline facilities for example- we combine an existing physical deterioration equation with different stochastic models. We examine the applicability of the method to underground concrete structures for communication using data derived from actual structures.

This paper discusses the wide variety of ways of appreciating the scenery of Sagano, by analyzing descriptions of travelogues during Edo era. Firstly, we understand what travelogue writers saw and thought, and behaved in Sagano. Secondly, we examine the ways of appreciating the scenery -the scenery of famous places for poetic and literary sites, the prospect, the pleasure, the scenery of temples and shrines-, and explain the diversity of appreciating the scenery as enjoying the visual landscape, reliving historical and literary images, behaving like a mountain hermits, and so on. Finally, we consider the scenic diversity of Sagano was caused not only by the variety of the physical environment, but the variety of ways of appreciating the scenery, and the status of the actual visual landscape which corresponds with the historical and literary images.

Inariyama tunnel of Hanshin expressway Kyoto route (Route 8) is directly connected to the local road. The approach length to the intersection to the local road from the expressway tunnel mouth is only 140m so that the expressway vehicles could not reduce the speed because of the short approach length to the intersection. The sequence design method that is commonly used for the environmental effect in the architectural field is applied for the traffic safety measure in order to reduce the speed of the expressway vehicles. Quantitative analysis was conducted to measure the speed reduction effect by questionnaire method using CG movies and effective sequence design was developed.

This study focuses on determination of the domains related with the peaks of mountains which are not physical but visual features, in Higashiyama area. Visual peaks are identified by traditional names of the peaks, visible-invisible analysis using GIS, and perspective views made on 2,236 observation points located on the foot of Higashiyama Peaks. The distribution of the domains specified by the visual environment is plotted on the map after determination of the highest visual peaks of each observation points. As a result, two types of the configuration are shown; one is the array of domains which cross over the mountain foot area east to west, another is the double belt which consists from a few wide domains of the great peaks and plenty of tiny domains of micro peaks. Especially this double belt implies the basis of coexistence of multiple cultures in harmony with nature on the Higashiyama mountain-foot area.

Focusing on household behavior of vehicle holding duration and annual traveling distance, this study proposed a Copula-based Multivariate Survival model in order to capture the interdependence between these two behaviors. The proposed model was applied for the household vehicle holding data surveied in Chugoku region, Japan in 2006. The estimated model showed the effectiveness in terms of model performance and applicability, comparing with the conventional independent modeling approach. Comparative analyses of the different types of copulas supported the use of Clayton copula. The estimated copula parameter indicated the significant negative correlation between vehicle holding and vehicle use.

Restoration projects for Dejima, an artificial fan-shaped island, have been undergoing in Nagasaki city. The problem is that there exist few information and materials about the design and construction method or original shape at the time. The purpose of this research is estimating construction methods of Dejima and its surrounding stone walls by executing trenches and land survey with GIS for planning restoration of the stonewalls. For achieving this, we estimated the area by assuming the circumference, which was proved to be consisted by straight-lines, and based on the knowledge, we started to work for restoring stone walls. On the other hand, we estimated the amount of reclamation of Dejima and its digging place, the artificial shape of the bank near Dejima by investigating old picture maps.

It is clear that the flood-control dams have the effects of flood-control. However, it is difficult for all general public to understand exactly the flood-control effects by dams. On the contrary, after flood disaster, the fact is that general public actualize the impression that dams are wrongdoer, or the impression that dams have no effect on flood protection. In this paper, we verify a policy to correct the discordance between the inhabitants'subjective impressions on the flood-control effects by dams and the objective effects of flood-control by dams.

The authors' past study developed a scale measuring the spiritual vulgarity of the masses, based upon Ortega's “The Revolt of the Masses” (1930). The study indicated that the vulgarity of the masses might have a negative impact on urban landscape and consensus building around public works. In the present report, given with the previous results, we aimed to explore an effective measure for reducing one's vulgar disposition. For this purpose, we focused on the classic book “Representative Men of Japan” by Kanzo Uchimura and hypothesized that reading this book might reduce the vulgarity of the masses. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment in which we asked participants to read the book and examined the reading effects on the reduction of the spiritual vulgarity. The obtained data statically supported the hypothesis, thus indicating the potential of the book as a relevant measure for reducing the vulgarity.
