The Japan Search, which covers all kinds of cultural resources in Japan, is a point of arrival in the genealogy of Japan's digital archive. On the other hand, it is not obvious why the "Digital Archive of All Materials" was realized for the first time in 2019, and why the National Diet Library leads the project. This paper summarizes the public information on the circumstances of the birth of Japan Search through a discussion of the social context.

Japan Search collects metadata of a variety of content from libraries, museums, archives and research institutions across the country to provide an integrated search service. Since 2017, the National Diet Library has been working closely with the Cabinet Office and other related ministries and organizations to develop Japan Search. After a beta version released in February 2019, an official version of Japan Search was launched to the public in August 2020. In this article, we give the overview of the current range of metadata aggregated in Japan Search in terms such as its type and secondary use conditions. We also explain Japan Search's collaboration policy with organizations and its future direction for expanding cooperation.

ColBase, a database of museum collections operated by the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, provides data in cooperation with a digital archive portal, "Japan Search". In this article, we will introduce the background and overview of the development of ColBase, touching on the handling of the license and the linkage with each museum's own database. We will explain collaborations through ColBase with various institutions, and then more in detail that with Japan Search. We review the problems that arose from the recent renewal of ColBase, and discuss the challenges and expectations for the future.

Japan Search RDF Schema is a data model and vocabulary for large scale portals that aggregate data from heterogeneous domains. It is designed to be effective in terms of user tasks as well as be beneficial to data providers, considering the previous practices in other countries. As the basis of the design, it introduces dual layered model where both structured nodes and simple properties contribute to the description. Also, it distinguishes information about data sources and item access from the metadata of item itself. This paper discusses the points of consideration for the basic design. Then it explains the details of the spatiotemporal information representation and data normalization, with the SPARQL functionalities in mind.

Japan Search, which is a national integrated cross-sectoral portal, with collection of metadata from local and national libraries, museums, archives to anime and broadcasting programs, has facilitated access to cultural resources. On the other hand, Japan Search and other services such as "IIIF Discovery in Japan" are aggregators of cultural resources mainly published by Japanese institutions. Therefore, we develop a discovery system for Japanese cultural resources from all over the world with data interoperability technologies, such as IIIF and RDF. This paper focuses on the usage of Japan Search RDF Model. We hope that the output of this research will be helpful for other projects to use the model.

The Courses of Study of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology state that the goal of education is to develop the skills to investigate and integrate information from surveys and other sources, and to develop the ability to think over from multiple perspectives. For these purposes, the use of MLA materials has been recommended, but the design of MLA has not been sufficiently discussed. In this study, we developed an inquiry-based curated class using Japan Search, and implemented it in elementary, junior high and high schools. The results showed an example of a learning design that creates opportunities for students to develop multifaceted and comprehensive perspectives by developing their own learning based on the questions they formulate. On the other hand, we also found that there are some issues that need to be addressed in developing the educational application of Japan Search.
