In this paper, we describe the diagnosis of the thermal equilibrium of arc plasma in electrical discharge machining (EDM) by spectroscopy. Radiant fluxes of different wavelengths from the arc plasma were measured, and the linearity of Boltzmann plotting and temperatures of atoms in the plasma were investigated. That plots aligned linearly and the temperatures of different atom species in plasma were equal indicate that the arc plasma in EDM is in thermal equilibrium. Thus, the temperature of EDM arc plasma can be obtained accurately by spectroscopy.

In this study, we investigated the discharge delay time of single pulse discharge when the surface of one of the electrodes is rough and that of the other is smooth. Although the delay time of single pulse discharge was shorter when the surfaces were rougher, the delay time was also affected by the surface topography. When the surface of the cathode was rougher than that of anode, the discharge delay time was shorter than that in the reverse case. In addition, in this study, we investigated the discharge delay time of three types of wire electrode used in WEDM. The work functions of the wire materials were measured and the surface electric fields of different surface topographies were analysed. It was found that the discharge delay time of the wire with the highest cutting efficiency was shortest due to the highest surface roughness. The effect of work function on the delay time was found to be insignificant in this work.

The conventional CuW electrode used widely for high precision electrical discharge machining (EDM) is generally made by the melting method. However, its mixture ratio of copper to tungsten is structurally limited within a narrow range. On the other hand, the mixture ratio can readily be changed in the case of CuW made by the newly developed powder sintering method. In this study, in order to obtain a higher metal removal rate with a lower electrode wear rate, EDM characteristics for metal mold steel with the CuW electrode made by the new method were investigated with various mixture ratios. Experimental results clarified that the EDM characteristics are greatly changed by the Cu mixture ratio, and the electrode wear rate can be greatly decreased at the Cu mixture ratios of 10 - 20% under rough EDM conditions. It was also confirmed that much workpiece material and heat-resolved carbon adhere to the electrode surface at Cu mixture ratios of 10 - 20%, which plays an important role in reducing electrode wear.
