We describe the results of manufacturing a laminated mold provided with air vents for injection molding. Since this mold is made by diffusion bonding laminated metal sheets on which microgrooves have been fabricated, micro-air vents can be provided at any place on the forming surface without a restriction. The contours of the metal sheets, together with channels for circulating a coolant, were cut by laser. Microgrooves of 60μm depth and 565μm width were fabricated by electrolyte jet machining. The results of forming showed that the air vents are effective in improving the flowability of resin and prevent short shots. It was also found that the air vents can reduce the negative pressure generated inside the space between the mold and the molded part when the molded part is released from the mold. As a result, deformation of the molded part was decreased and molding accuracy was improved. Furthermore, the effects of the size of the air vents on the appearance of the molded parts and clogging of the air vents owing to resin penetration were evaluated.

High-speed cutting techniques in electric discharge machining are expected to contribute to cost cutting and energy reduction in these machining processes. It has been revealed that the surface shape of the wire tool electrode influences the wire electric discharge machining characteristics. It has also been hypothesized that a rough wire has many concentrated electric fields that lead to the shorter electrical discharge delay time. However, there are not enough experimental results to demonstrate the effect of the surface shape of the wire tool electrode on improving the processing speed. It is also expected that a simple and effective processing method will increase and control the roughness of a wire tool electrode. In this study, we proposed the wet blasting method as a new surface roughness treatment technique, and investigated the processing ability of this method under various conditions. Moreover, we examined the electric discharge machining characteristics of cemented carbide using a wire tool electrode roughened by a suitable wet blasting treatment.

An electroplated diamond tool is widely used for grinding, because of its high grinding efficiency. However, the height of the grain protrusion of the electroplated diamond tool is not uniform such that surface roughness deteriorates. Therefore, it is necessary to make the height of diamond grains uniform. In this paper, we propose a new electrical discharge truing (ED truing) method for the electroplated diamond tool. This ED truing method can be applied in a conventional electroplated diamond tool whose grains (diamond) have no electrical conductivity. As a result, it is shown that it is possible to truncate only the tips of diamond grains directly by this new ED truing method and to obtain an electroplated diamond tool with a uniform grain height. Moreover, it is confirmed that ground surface roughness is improved by using the ED-trued electroplated diamond tool.
