Through the scientific support programs held at Japan Institute of Sports Sciences, we support national federations that have unaddressed issues for improving competitive abilities. Our technical team provides support for athletes and coaches by employing video-based information technology. In this paper, three systems are described that we developed for athletes and coaches. The video feedback system provides support for conducting specialized training and for maintaining discipline. The video database system can be employed for analyzing the opponent and for studying new techniques. The nutrition evaluation system can be used for aiding athletes in maintaining their physical strength and controlling their weights. Furthermore, to ensure ease of usage and automation, we are incorporating technologies associated with peer-to-peer networking, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence within our developed systems.

Since the 1991 amendment of the Standards for the Establishment of Universities, physical education (PE) courses in the liberal arts program have been reduced or abolished in several universities. However, the Japanese Association of University Physical Education and Sports (JAUPES) and some universities have continued efforts for the survival of PE. In these activities, many workshops and studies for faculty development (FD) have been implemented. Besides, several classes in PE have been improved. In this paper, we will outline these trends in the FD for PE.
