The damping properties of the vibration for a rectangular plate with a viscoelastic layer are presented. The analysis is carried out using the Ritz method. The rectangular plates are partially covered with constrained viscoelastic damping layer. The Ritz minimization scheme derives the complex eigenvalue problem that gives the natural frequencies and modal loss factors. Several example cases are presented to demonstrate the validity and utility of this method for patch damping design concepts.

The thermomechanical properties of polyurethane-shape memory polymer foam were investigated by the compressive test. The main results are summarized as follows. (1) Strain is recovered at temperatures around the glass transition temperature during heating. (2) The rate of strain recovery is 99% and does not change under cyclic deformation. (3) The rate of strain fixity is 100%. (4) Stress diminished during cooling. Stress decreases markedly at temperatures below the glass transition temperature. (5) Because large deformation and large variation in volume are obtained in shape-memory polymer foam, shape-memory polymer foam has excellent functional performance for large elements of machines and structures.

Shape memory alloys have the properties of the pseudo-elasticity and the shape memory effect. Therefore, shape memory alloys are applied to the components as industrial and medical materials in various fields. The objective of this work is to formulate about the effect of Cu content and heat temperature on the pseudo-elasticity properties of Ti-Ni-Cu shape memory alloys and to develop how to simulate the pseudo-elasticity behaviors. It was clarified to though the simulations that the pseudo-elasticity behaviors are largely affected heat temperature and Cu content.

This paper deals with the scattering of time harmonic flexural waves by a through crack in a magnetically saturated plate under a uniform magnetic field normal to the plate surfaces. The analysis is based on Mindlin's plate theory of magneto-elastic interactions under a magnetic field. An incident wave giving rise to moments symmetric about the crack plane is applied. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the mixed boundary value problem to one involving the numerical solution of a Fredholm integral equation. The dynamic moment intensity factor versus frequency is computed and influence of the magnetic field on the normalized values is displayed graphically.

Porous ceramics are applied to filter materials in various fields such as hot temperature energy apparatus and purifier. But their strength properties are not clarified enough to make a strength design. The strength properties of porous ceramics are influenced by the pore density and matrix ceramics. Therefore, a formula model for mechanical damage with the increase of tensile load was devised in order to clarify their influence. The stress-strain behaviors of porous ceramics under tensile load were successfully simulated using our devisal formula model. The influences of pore density and matrix ceramic strength properties on maximum strength, undamaged strength, bulk elastic modulus and so were found from stress-strain behavior obtained by the simulation.
