Time-dependent melting and deforming processes of heated polymeric materials is modeled and direct numerical simulation is performed accordingly. Their main dynamic (mass and heat transfer) behaviors are well-captured and role of deformation is discussed.

For cavitating flow simulation using a bubble model, cavitation inception effect was included to see the delay of cavitation growth, which is expected to affect on cavitation bubble distribution and pressure distribution around a hydrofoil. Simulated flows around NACA0015 hydrofoil showed higher lift force than the previous simulation because the delay of cavitation growth maintains negative pressure peak near the leading edge.

The diffusive-thermal instability of premixed flames under the low temperature environment was studied by unsteady calculations of reactive flows based on the model equation. As the unburned-gas temperature became lower, the growth rate decreased and the unstable range narrowed at Lewis numbers lower than unity, which was due to the decrease of the burning velocity of a planar flame. As for the growth rate and unstable range normalized by the burning velocity of a planar flame, the former increased and the latter widened. This was due to the enlargement of Zeldovich numbers. Owing to diffusive-thermal instability, cellular-shaped flame fronts formed. The normalized burning velocity of a cellular flame increased as the unburned-gas temperature became lower.

Direct numerical simulations of motions of finite-size solid particles in vortical steady flow have been conducted by using an immersed boundary method developed by Uhlmann (2005). It is then verified that our simulations realize the well-known phenomenon of preferential concentration of small heavy particles around vortices when their Stokes number is about unity.

When we simulate flows on moving-grid time-dependently, the Moving-Grid Finite-Volume Method is crucial. The method was firstly proposed for compressible flows. Subsequently, the method for incompressible flows was applied to the structured grid, but it has not been applied to the unstructured grid yet. The unstructured grid is crucial to simulate flows with the complex-shaped body. On the other hand, the influence of flows driven by body-motion is important. In this paper, we propose a new Unstructured Moving-Grid Finite-Volume Method based on fractional step method for incompressible flows. Moreover, we apply this method to the coupled problem of fluid-flow and body-motion.

This paper presents numerical results for vibration responses of two side-by-side circular cylinders which are placed in smooth flow. The two cylinders are treated as a system of two degrees of freedom in the in-line and cross-flow directions. Spatial discretization of a computational region is performed by the third-order upwind finite element scheme with ALE approach and the Newmark-β method is applied to compute the vibration equations of two circular cylinders.

To evaluate the influence of SOFC electrode microstructure on electrochemical reaction at the surface of electrode, focused ion beam fabrication and scanning electron microscope combined dual-beam system (FIB-SEM) is used for taking the microstructure data into account for numerical analysis to consider the gas and electrochemical reaction distribution in the electrode. As a result, it is found that the small amount of electrode was not worked as a reactive surface because that kind of domain was not connected to the other particles or reactive fuel is not distributed to reactive domain.

An iterative domain decomposition method is applied to numerical analysis of 3-Dimensional (3D) linear advection-diffusion problems. The iterative domain decomposition method is combined with the Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) procedure and the Hierarchical Domain Decomposition Method (HDDM) which is adopted in parallel computing. In this paper, we consider an improvement with the Balancing Domain Decomposition (BDD) preconditioner. Also, we discuss a unified approach for the construction of BDD preconditioners in various applications including heat transfer problems, elastic problems, incompressible viscous flow problems and magnetostatic problems.
