The present paper is the continuation of the author's previous communicaiton^<(1)>, and deals with the experimental results obtained by Coker's photoelastic method on the distributiotn of two-dimensional stresses due to the presence of circular holes in the simple beams of the short spans. Fig.1 shows three specimens No.1,2 and 3 used in experiments with main dimensions and the sections on which the observations are carried out. The isoclinic lines and lines of principal stress obtained upon them are represented in Fig.2. Numerical values of three rectangular components of stress are plotted in Fig.3,4 and 5 for No.1,2 and 3 Specimens respectively. Suppose that if the common theory of flexure held true even in such cases on the middle sections of the specimens, the distribution of the stress 〓 would be represented by a straight line passing through the centre of gravity of the sections as shown in Fig.6. The ratios of the stresses at points A, B and C obtained by experiments p_a, p_b and p_c and calculated by the common theory f_a, f_b, and f_c are indicated on the base of the values of l/h in Figs.7 and 8. Contour stresses around the holes in Specimens No.1. 2 and 3 are shown in Fig.9 ; while those of different diameters having centres at the same point are plotted in Fig.10. The results in Fig.11 are those obtained around the holes of the same diameters as in Fig.10,being the centres in these cases at the middle of the central sections. Fig.12 shows the results in a simple beam with two circular holes cut through it symmetrically placed on a horizontal line of the same height as in Specimen No.1. As the results shown in Fig.5,the maximum tension does not occur at the outermost fibre in Specimen No.3,but at the upper outer edge of the hole. In order to confirm this result specimens made of plaster of Paris and yellow wax were loaded till the crack appeared, and it was found along some lines of principal stress in the former, but at the point expected by the result of experiment in the latter. They are shown in photogrphs of Fig.13. A pair of curves appeared in the lower part of the specimens of the latter as in Fig.13. It was due to the further loading on them after the crack was made. These curves are certainly made by sliding and are so similar in the form as dotted lines obtained graphically from the isoclinic lines in Fig.5.

The new Charcoal Gas Producer, designed by G.Asakawa was completed after the practical research of two years. It is the most economical producer of the portable type, weighing only 170 kgms. which is used directly connecting to two to four horse power farmer's oil engine without any change of construction. The difference of the working expense between the use of the fuel of oil and charcoal is very remarkable. It saves thirty-two percent in the city and fifty percent or more in the country, when the charcoal is used. The charcoal is abundant every-where in Japan while a larger part of the kerosene is imported from abroad. On the day, the lecture was delivered, the producer was exhibited to the members of the S.M.E. in its actual working condition.
