Mathematical and experimental investigations were carried out to determine how much decrease in the total shrinkage pressure on the shrinkage surface of the built-up crank shaft is caused by boring dowel pin holes and driving-in pins. And it is found that the decrease in the shrinkage pressure is not so remarkable as it is believed by certain famous german engine makers. The view, that the pin is not only useless, but also injurious, and the boring pin holes has rather the effect to decrease considerably the shrinkage pressure, is quite disproved.

In the present paper, the writer deals with various aspects of a uniform beam simply supported at both ends when a single load rolls over it at different speeds. With special reference to Zimmermann's effect, he has made experimental studies upon the reactions at both ends, (shearing force), the maximum bending moment, the deflection at the middle point, and the path of the load as compared with those in a statical state. As a result of these experiments, an empirical formula has been deduced, in which the deflection at the middle point of the beam under the rolling load is a function of the span of beam, the weight of load, and the velocity of rolling load. The formula will give us a basis from which various behaviors of beams in dynamical state are to be estimated.
