The author proposes a method of determining the fatigue limit of steel by measuring the width of the mechanical hysteresis loops after the material has been subjected to repeated bending stresses of increasing magnitude. The author finds that up to a certain amount of stress the width of the hysteresis loops is practically zero after which it increases gradually. Thus the relation between the width of hysteresis loops (b) and the maximum stress induced (s) is represented by the formula as follows : - [numerical formula] , where A, B, and m are emperical constants. From the intersection of the curve represented by the above formula upon the stress-axis the value of the fatigue limit (s_0) can be determined. The value determined in this way is lower than that found by the S〜N diagrm method. In the author's opinion this difference will depend on the results from the S〜N diagram method which, in actual practice, will give higher values than true values. The author also discusses the effect of the number of repetion and vibration on the width of hysteresis loops in the article.

After Dr.Fry's process, strain figures for various specimens under various loads are shown. A few special points of interest are : 1. Of the specimens under torsion, there are two kinds of strain, one being parallel to the axis of the specimen and the other perpendicular to it. These two kinds of strain are clearly obtained 2. With regard to the strain produced by punching a hole, the material is found to have been strained much farther than generally anticipated, while in the case of drilling a hole the straining condition is quite different from the former case and less extensive. 3. In preparing the etching agent, it is found to m dify the chemical composition according to the condition and amount of strain in order to make more vivid the display of strain figures which are otherwise faint or invisible. A few examples of etching solutions with which satisfactory results obtained are given.
