Pavement surface is exposed to both traffic and weather, and changes its properties with the result of deterioration such as cracks on the surface, plastic deformation, etc.
The conditions of pavement having such deterioration are referred to as “deteriorative properties of the road surface”, and are indicated by the degrees of cracks, transverse irregularity (rut depth), longitudinal irregularity (roughness), etc. The survey of such conditions is termed “a road surface deteriorative property survey”. Responsible agencies have carried out such survies, by means of man power, since about 1960, in order to determine the cause of pavement deterioration as well as life expectancy of the road, and thereafter establish a reasonable pavement repair plan.
However, owing to the ever increasing amount of traffic, the conventional survey of in-service roads is very difficult to perform from the points of view of safety and efficiency of survey, and also due to the inconvenience to other vehicles. Moreover, since the conventional transverse irregularity survey can be done only after blocking off the traffic, such a survey becomes actually impossible these days.
In order to overcome such difficulties, this paper intends to present photographic survey system for measuring the transverse irregularity of pavement surface and also a photographic analysis of photograph obtained thereform. The photographic survey system comprises a 35 mm pulse camera and a hair-line beam projector mounted on a vehicle.
As a result of development of the photographic survey system, the efficiency of the transverse irregularity survey can be increased by up to 100 times in comparison with the conventional man-powered one. The results of the photographic analysis are quite satisfactory and substantially equal to those yielded by one carried out via man power.

Many studies about the geometrical problem for single aircraft MSS data coverage have been made, and the effective orientation and restitution methods have been already developed by G. Konecny, et al.. Little, however, has been done in Japan in the way of investigating this problem fundamentally and clarifying difficulties in the practical analysis of MSS data. Therefore, in this report, the orientation problem for single aircraft MSS data coverage is analyzed on the Konecny's theory and then the restitution problem is treated. The authors introduced a simple restitution technique which was applicable to MSS data of hilly terrain.
The method introduced was tested with an experimental model (MSS imagery of Kyoto City) in order to investigate the accuracies attainable. In this paper, some of the findings are reported in the practical restitution of aircraft MSS data.
