Systolic and diastolic function were studied echocardiographycally in 58 mitral valve insuficiency dogs and 74 healthy dogs. Grade of mitral valve insufficiency was classified as mild, modelate and severe on the base of mitral regurgetation echo-cardiographycally.
Data obtained were compared to those of healthy dogs.
Fractioal shortning (FS) in mitral valve insufficiency was increased with progress of severity. In severe cases, however, there was a tendency of decrease in FS. The result indicates hyperkinetic motion in order to increase outflow volume.
Early diastoic flow velocity (E) increased and rapid filling phase decreased in severe cases. Atrial contraction flow velocity (A) decreased, therefore pseudonormalization of AE ratio was observed. Left ventricular internal dimension in diastole and systole increased in severe cases, and systolic and distolic blood pressure measured by oscillometric method has the tendency of decrese in severe cases.

This study was designed to assess the effect of hyperlipidemia on cardiovascular responses including coronary circulation to atrial pacing in a porcine model. Four-week-old piglets were divided into two groups; one fed a control diet and the other was fed an atherogenic diet for 8 weeks. Cardiovascular responses were evaluated to atrial pacing from simultaneous recordings of femoral arterial pressure, left intraventricular pressure, differential value of left intraventricular pressure, and coronary blood flow. It was found that no significant difference in the baseline values of cardiovascular function was observed between the control and hyperlipidemic groups. However, 1) the decrease in arterial blood pressure and left intraventricular systolic pressure to atrial pacing in the hyperlipidemic group was larger than those in the control group, 2) the increase in maximum differential value of left ventricular pressure (LVdP/dt max) and coronary blood flow to atrial pacing in the hyperlipidemic group was smaller than those in control group, 3) significant correlation did not exist between the percent changes in coronary blood flow and LVdP/dt max in the hyperlipidemic group. These results suggest that the functional reserve of cardiovascular system was diminished by the hyperlipidemia.

Clinical findings from general clinical examination and echocardiography of 10-year-old dog whose chief complaint was cough and abdominal distention indicate typical cardiac tamponade. Clinical course was observed with conservative treatment.
The dog died 22 days after diagnosis. Autopsy showed retention of blood-like fluid in pericardial cavity, tumor at the base of the heart in pericardial cavity and compression zone in the right atrium. We confirmed echocardiography to be effective not only in understanding hemodynamics of heart and great vessels but also in diagnosing cardiac tamponade in pericardial cavity.
