Among 720 cattle with congenital anomalies of circulatory system, the splenic anomalies were detected in 21 cattle, including 3 cases of asplenia, 6 cases of hypoplastic spleen, 4 cases of two spleens, and 8 cases of lobated spleen. The anatomical characteristics of the present and reported cases with splenic anomalies were investigated. The viscero-atrial discordance was observed in 1 case of asplenia, 2 cases of hypoplastic spleen, and 3 cases of two spleens. The cattle with asplenia showed the anatomical characteristics similar to the human asplenia syndrome. In the cattle with hypoplastic spleen, the anomalous placement of abdominal organs, the symmetric development of asymmetric organs and the associated cardiovascular anomalies were less severe than those seen in the asplenia syndrome. The cattle with two spleens showed a tendency for association of the anomalous placement of abdominal organs and the azygos continuation of caudal vena cava. The cattle with lobated spleen showed a tendency for association of the azygos continuation of caudal vena cava.

We investigated the utility of the pulmonary systolic velocity to the pulmonary diastolic velocity (S/D ratio) as a measure of left ventricular (LV) diastolic function in dogs. Six beagles were anesthetized and respiration was controlled. A 3.5-Fr micromanometer-tipped catheter was placed into the LV. Dobutamine or esmolol was administered via the cephalic vein. The transmitral flow (TMF) and pulmonary venous flow (PVF) velocities were measured using transthoracic echocardiography. The ratios of the E/A ratio and S/D ratio were calculated. The heart rate, systolic left ventricular pressure, +dP/dt, and -dP/dt were increased significantly with dobutamine, but significantly decreased with esmolol. The TMF velocities were elevated significantly with dobutamine, but decreased significantly with esmolol. The PVF velocities were elevated significantly with dobutamine, but not changed with esmolol. The -dP/dt and LVEDP were significantly correlated with the S/D ratio (r2=0.44, r2=0.22; respectively), but not with the E/A ratio (r2=0.05, r2=0.01; respectively). Our results suggest that the S/D ratio provide additional information to investigate LV relaxation in healthy dogs.

In chicken embryos and chickens two and markedly long ductus arteriosus were detected. They connected left or right pulmonary artery with aorta and were divided into proximal and distal parts. Histologically the proximal part showed the structure of muscular artery and the distal one that of elastic artery. The lumen of the proximal part became obliterated by formation of the intimal cushion on the third day after hatching and thereafter the replacement of mascular elements by connective tissue occurred gradually in the ductal wall. The lumen of distal part was occluded within 60 days after hatching.
