Lactulose in a liquid from is considered difficult to crystallize in a water solution. However, a new crystal form of lactulose has recently been found, thus the application of lactulose has entered a new stage.
Many Studies of the physiological functions of lactulose, beginning with the promotion of Bifidobacteria proliferation in the intestine, have revealed various and beneficial aspects. Lactulose is now added to infant formula and other foods. Used in the treatment of hyperammonimea, hepatic encephalopathy and chronic constipation, lactulose has medical applications as well. Lactulose favourably affects insufficincies of liver and kidneys, is expected to lower the incidence of colorectal cancer, shows a therapeutic effect in salmonella carrier state, has an antiendotoxin effect, and contributes to a decreased response in diabetics. Lactulose prevents post surgery complications of obstructive jaundice, activates the immune system, and prevents urinary tract infections. Effects are shown perorally, as well as intravenously. The many possible uses of lactulose should be further studied to confirm existing data and clarify the mechanisms involved.
It is anticipated that lactulose will be used not only as a sugar substance, but in the maintenance of healthy life as well. The many physiological functions of lactulose are expected to be developed for such applications as medical treatment of diseases and for use in prophylaxis. Lactulose is foreseen as playing an important role in maintaining a physically healthy and active society in the future.
