A lot of people in Fukushima are being exposed to radioactivities emitted from Fukushima nuclear power plants where a serious nuclear accident occurred just after the great earthquake of 11th March. Urgent screening tests and tests for the people temporary entering the contaminated area have been still carried on even after 5 months past from the disaster. I participated in the screening test, and I report my experience and the situation.

The 1st International Beam Instrumentation Conference (IBIC 12) will be held in Tsukuba, Japan in 2012. Currently there are two major workshops on beam instrumentation, the Beam Instrumentation Workshop (BIW) in North America, and the European Workshop on Beam Diagnostics and Instrumentation (DIPAC) in Europe. From 2012, new international beam instrumentation conference series IBIC will start. The IBIC rotates among the geographic regions of Asia, Europe, and the Americas on a three-year cycle.

KEK Tsukuba site is located at 165 km distance from Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station. After the East Japan Earthquake on March 11, the electric current was almost cut off. Only few radiation monitors at the site boundary were powered from outside, and they detected steep increase of gamma-ray doses at 2:13 on March 15. Then radiation and radioactivity measurements from the power plants were started in KEK Radiation Science Center.

The first clinical trial with carbon beams generated from HIMAC was conducted in June 1994. The total number of patients treated was in excess of 6,000 as of February 2011. Based on more than ten years of experience with HIMAC, a new treatment research facility project has been progressed for the further development of therapy with HIMAC. The new treatment research facility, as an extension of the existing one, has been designed, and the related R&D work has been carried out. Based on the design study and R&D work, the new treatment research facility was constructed, and the clinical study has been successfully initiated since May 17^th 2011.

In recent years, the acceleration at 100MV/m at X-band frequency range with travelling-wave accelerator structure is being realized, based on the Linear Collider R&D and recent research advancement. This X-band technology has now been started to be considered as candidates for many accelerators worldwide.

The 8th Annual Meeting of the Particle Accelerator Society of Japan was held at Tsukuba International Congress Center, Tsukuba, Ibaraki from August 1 to 3, 2011. Despite the Great East Japan Earthquake, which occurred on March 11, 2011, the annual meeting could welcome many participants for the meeting and also many companies for the corporate exhibition.
