Bipolar electrode systems have a unique electrochemical feature that can induce redox reactions wirelessly. When an electric field is applied to an electric conductor placed in an electrolyte solution, oxidation and reduction reactions can be induced at both ends of the same electric conductor. In this way, bipolar electrodes systems are suitable for simple biosensing application such as point of care testing. In particular, it is possible to induce redox reactions wirelessly and in parallel by arranging a large number of the electric conductors in an electric field. From this feature of bipolar electrode system, novel high-throughput device designs have been reported. It is expected that a wide variety of research and development will continue in the biosensing field of metabolites, proteins, nucleic acid, and cell functions by using bipolar electrode system. In this paper, I will also introduce theoretical research, understanding of principle and prospects of the bipolar electrode system.
