The purpose of this study is to clarify the differences in factors related to the emergence of subjective learning needs in the elderly and the transition to their practice, based on the theory of health behavior modification. As a result of the analysis, the stage change of the emergence of needs from the absence of subjective learning needs is related to the recognition of learning effects. It was clarified that the transformation of is related to the fact that high awareness of learning effects, family and friends are favorable and supportive of the learning of the elderly. There are two stages :1)from the absence of subjective learning needs to the emergence of needs, and 2)from the emergence of needs to practice. But it is necessary to use different intervention methods for the transformation between each stage. It is suggested that different intervention programs should be implemented to promote the generation and transformation of learning needs into action.

The revised Elderly Employment Stabilization Law, which came into effect in 2021, provides an alternative to continued employment at the company one worked before retirement. This paper focused on the "self-seeking" group, who found the job without relying on the networks or mediation of their former company, and compared their socioeconomic characteristics and work reasons with those of the continuously employed group.

Our analyses show that the self-seeking group has longer educational year and older than the continuously employed group. In terms of work reasons, the self-seeking group tended to choose "time affordance”. These results suggest that not only firm size and occupation but also the socioeconomic characteristics and work reasons explain the difference between self-seeking group and continuously employed group.

Objective: This study aimed to examine how to treat missing data of the Kaigo–Yobo checklist(KYCL).

Methods: Participants constituted 6,187 independent older adults. We narrowed down the candidates’ score assigned to the missing data using the Cox proportional hazard analysis with the KYCL response status. Then, comparisons were made using the multiple imputation method.

Results: The average value of score of no answer for each item assigned based on the partial regression coefficient was 0.86 points and the median value was 0.63 points. We compared three types of complementation methods:(1)substitute 0.5 points for missing data and round down the total score;(2)substitute 0.5 points and round up the total score; and(3)substitute 1 point with multiple imputation methods. As a result, we found(1)to be the closest in terms of comparison with the results of the multiple imputation method in the score distribution and relationship between frailty and incidence of Long-term Care Insurance Certification.

Conclusions: It is appropriate to allocate 0.5 points to the missing data of KYCL and discard the total score.

The present study quantitively examines the factors associated with discontinuation of community salons’ activities in relation with: 1)salons’ characteristics, 2)the problems that salons experienced, and 3)the types of support salons received from other organizations.

A baseline survey was administered to 224 leaders of community salons who registered with the Salon Project managed by Itabashi Council of Social Welfare(ICSW)in May of 2014, and 207 answered. The data concerning salons’ discontinuation or continuation were obtained from the ICSW in September 2019. This study analyzed the data concerning the salons(n=123), which registers older adults as the main participants. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the factors influence on discontinuation of the salon during the follow-up period.

Of these 123 salons, 34 salons(27.6%)discontinued their activity between May 2015 and April 2019. The results of logistic regression revealed that the factors associated with discontinuation are: 1)had problem with getting participants who visit regularly; and 2)did not receive support to get participants from government-related organizations.

This paper sought to clarify the research contents of studies on dementia nursing in Japan by text mining with use KH Coder of the title of the paper and to find the starting point for future research. We looked through the Japan Medical Abstract Society Ichushi Web database without specifying the issue year, for original articles containing words meaning dementia, in their titles and which were classified as nursing. We analyzed of the co-occurrent relationships of words with use of KH Coder.

In 2838 papers, the overall picture of the co-occurrence network consisted of 11 groups, and covered article titles on understanding and correspondence in the treatment scene, factors for continuing to live at home, support for family who are caregivers, effects of music therapy, daily life and living functions, evaluation, and issues of efforts at facilities, resolving difficult-to-handle symptoms and situations, review of literature, efforts to prevent falls, current status and issues, and effects of practical training for nursing students.

As the starting points of the research, it were suggested support for continuing to live at home, the viewpoint of hospital nurses, the dignity of elderly people with dementia, and verification of non-drug therapy.

The application form specifying residents’ reasons for housing adaptations is an important document in Japan, as it must be submitted when applying for housing adaptation services under the long-term care insurance system. Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare provides a standard form, but each municipality can revise or further add original items to it; however, the exact details of such modifications remain unclear. This study examined the original items modified by each municipality, to enable their use in future revisions and further research. We classified the forms into “A: standard form,” “B: partial revision of standard form,” and “C: major revision of standard form,” and examined the differences between “A: standard form”, and “B: partial revision of standard form” and “C: major revision of standard form.” Among the 414 municipalities selected, A was used by 27%, B by 32%, and C by 6% of the municipalities. As a result of organizing the original items, the findings suggest the need to revise the forms in order to reduce the burden on long-term care professionals and help achieve better and comprehensive assessment regarding measures to deal with the difficulties experienced by residents in daily life.

The purpose of this study was to identify the awareness and issues perceived by staff members in nursing facilities with regard to residents considered sexual minorities. Descriptions found in the free description column of 193 questionnaires in relation to support for sexual minority residents were analyzed. The survey, which was conducted from November 2019 to February 2020, targeted staff at 26 nursing homes in Tokyo. A qualitative data analysis method unveiled the following five categories: “Awareness of the presence of sexual minority residents,” “Awareness of discrimination against sexual minority residents,” “Attitudes based on the philosophy of interpersonal assistance,” “Actual challenges when moving in,” and “Arrangements to welcome sexual minority residents.” Many of the staff members were receptive toward sexual minority residents and wanted to obtain useful knowledge so as to support them. However, some respondents seemed to have an insufficient understanding of sexual minority residents’ specific needs. This lack of understanding indicates the need for opportunities to impart accurate knowledge and in-depth understanding of the sexual minority community.

There is a social understanding in the phrase “Hito ni meiwaku wo kakete wa ikenai” (Don’t impose on others) that is widely adopted in Japanese society. People interpret this norm to mean that they should attempt to do as much as they can on their own and refrain from asking others for help. The Japanese sense of ‘independence” seems counter-intuitive given the prevalent perspective of Japanese group behavior as based on dependence in a vertical society structure. Nevertheless, this paper suggests that there is a strong ‘Japanese sense of independence’ to do their best without asking for help even in situations where they cannot cope with various difficulties on their own. In this study, we discuss the Japanese definition of independence and autonomy and the rights of older people that may play a role in constructing the societal norms and values in Japanese society. Furthermore, this study reviewed literature from Japan to investigate psychological factors related to specific Japanese values in interpersonal relationships. Our mini-review revealed that ‘family,’ especially ‘children,’ was the most frequently cited object that older people did not wish to bother. Moreover, there was a tendency among older adults to prioritize consideration for others over their own needs. We will discuss the psychological aspects behind this ‘norm’ that may have influenced the well-being of older adults.

Objective: To clarify the effect of flower arrangement on the mental health of the elderly using elderly day care.

Methods: Elderly day care users were divided into 18 in the intervention group and 15 in the control group. The intervention group was given 20 minutes flower arrangement lessons four times in two months, and the control group continued normal elderly day care. Questionnaires including the WHO-5 Well-Being Index(WHO-5-J)were conducted one week before the first lesson and one week after the end of the two-month intervention. We also compared the WHO-5-J scores before and after the third lesson. A paired t-test was used to compare WHO-5-J scores before and after the intervention.

Results: The WHO-5-J score in the intervention group increased significantly from 16.9 to 19.8, while the change in the control group ranged from 15.3 to 16.0, which was not significant. There was no significant change in the WHO-5-J score before and after the 3rd lesson.

Conclusions: This study demonstrated that flower arrangements performed four times in two months improved the mental health of the elderly using elderly day care. Flower arrangements have the potential to be applied as a new long-term care prevention program.

This study investigated the relationship between denture use and swallowing function and life satisfaction among residents of Serviced Elderly Housing. A survey by leaving method was conducted on 68 residents aged 60 years and over at the Serviced Elderly Housing residence. Three times repetitive saliva swallowing time of 44 respondents(12 males, 32 females; mean age ± standard deviation: 84.6 ± 5.3 years)was measured at a later date. After bivariate analysis of the relationship between each item and the Life Satisfaction Scale K(LSIK), a general linear model with LSIK as the dependent variable was conducted. The results of multivariate analysis showed that LSIK was associated with denture use(B=-0.96), three times repetitive saliva swallowing time(B=-0.11), life impact of COVID-19(B=-1.73), presence of someone other than roommates to listen to worries and concerns(B=1.48), going out more than once a week(B=1.95), and age(B=0.08)were significantly related. The results suggested that high swallowing function increased life satisfaction, while denture use decreased life satisfaction. Since dentures are essential for maintaining chewing and swallowing functions, appropriate denture preparation and further improvement of dentures are expected. The present study was conducted during the COVID-19 epidemic, which also had an effect on the results.
