Use of an excellent damper is one of effective methods to reduce vibration and noise. The conventional dampers have two weighty drawback, one is that they exhibit high damping performance at limited temperatures and it takes much labor to install them. To overcome these drawbacks, we have developed a new type damper, Magnetic-Vibration-Damper (MVD). By applying magnetism, MVD has good damping properties even at low temperature. To make clear the damping mechanism of MVD, some experiments are carried out with the following results:
(1) Measurement of an increase in temperature between MVD and the vibrating body indicates how great the frictional loss generated on the inter face between MVD and the vibrating body.
(2) The damping performance of MVD keeps high in a wide range of temperatures, because the frictional loss influences the damping performance.
(3) The frictional loss is given by a product of the frictional resistance and the amplitude of sliding vibration of MVD.
