    This paper describes international standardization activities on B-PON, GE-PON, and G-PON. This paper explains their distinctive technologies, and compares them from the technical view. This paper also mentions future PON standards which are discussed in some standardization bodies.

    This paper provides insights on the status of broadband optical access market and technologies in Europe and on the expected trends for the next generation optical access networks. The final target for most operators, cities or any other player is of course FTTH (Fibre To The Home) deployment although we can expect intermediate steps with copper or wireless technologies. Among the two candidate architectures for FTTH, PON (Passive Optical Network) is by far the most attractive and cost effective solution. We also demonstrate that Ethernet based optical access network is very adequate to all-IP networks without any incidence on the level of quality of service. Finally, we provide feedback from a FTTH pilot network in Colmar (France) based on Gigabit Ethernet PON technology. The interest of this pilot lies on the level of functionality required for broadband optical access networks but also on the development of new home network configurations.

    Broadband access service, including FTTH, is now in widespread use in Japan. More than half of the households that have broadband Internet access construct local area networks (home networks) in their homes. In addition, information appliances such as personal computers, networked audio, and visual devices and game machines are connected to home networks, and many novel service applications are provided via the Internet. However, it is still difficult to install and incorporate these devices and services because networked devices have been developed in different communities. I briefly explain the current status of information appliances and home networking technologies and services and discuss some of the problems in this and their solutions.

    We propose an IP broadcasting system architecture using passive optical networks (PON) utilizing the optical broadcast links of a PON with a downstream bandwidth allocation algorithm to provide a multi-channel IP broadcasting service to home subscribers on single broadband IP network infrastructures. We introduce the design and adaptation of the optical broadcast links to effectively broadcast video contents to home subscribers. We present a performance analysis that includes the downstream bandwidth utilization efficiency of the broadcast link and the bandwidth control of the IP broadcasting and Internet data. Our analysis and simulation results show that the proposed system can provide 100 HDTV channels to every user over fiber lines. We also propose an IPTV channel selection mechanism in an ONT by selecting a broadcast stream. We developed and evaluated a prototype that can achieve a 15-msec IPTV channel selection speed.

    We have already proposed a Gigabit Ethernet-Optical Switched Access Network (GE-OSAN) architecture that realizes longer transmission distances and achieves higher security than the conventional Passive Optical Network (PON). To confirm the technical feasibility of the architecture, we introduce here a GE-OSAN prototype system for down-stream transmission. We present the Optical Switching Module (OSM), which uses (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 (PLZT) optical packet switches, and show that it realizes switching within 10ns of the designed position in the Inter-Frame Gap (IFG). We also introduce an Optical Network Unit (ONU) with optical burst receiver that uses off-the-shelf commercial devices to reduce its cost; two types of an optical to electrical signal (O/E) converter are implemented for performance comparison. After testing both of them, we select the one that satisfies our acquisition time requirement of 64ns.

    This paper describes a novel optical fiber line testing system operating at 1.65μm using test light bypass modules. We show a new testing configuration for add/drop multiplexer (ADM) ring networks. The test light bypass modules were installed in individual customer buildings so the test light can bypass the ADMs. We evaluated the bit-error performance with a 2.48832Gbit/s ADM ring network using a prototype test light bypass module. We confirmed that this testing system can monitor the optical fiber cables of an ADM ring network, and that it causes no degradation in transmission quality. We show the operating area provided by the system dynamic range expressed in terms of fiber length and customer building number. The prototype system could monitor an ADM ring network linking five buildings with a 5km loop. We also performed an in-service monitoring field trial in a 2.6km ring network with three ADM nodes. This testing system enables us to reduce the operating, administration, and maintenance cost and improves the transmission quality of ADM ring networks.

    The cognitive radio system consists of multiple wireless access systems that cover overlapping areas and cognitive terminals that use one or more of the wireless access systems simultaneously. In this paper, we describe the system architecture of a platform for load balancing and throughput enhancement with cognitive radio system. In our platform, each terminal, which can access multiple radio systems, operates with a single local IP address. Based on our platform, we have developed both simulator and testbed system. Through the simulation of and the testing of a testbed system, we prove that systems load balance was achieved between WiMAX and wireless LAN, and total user throughput was increased with the proposed platform. Moreover, load balance to satisfy both real time service and best effort service. These results demonstrate the platform described in the paper can achieve a convergence with plural wireless systems.

    We previously reported, for a coherent optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) system using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) phase en/decoders, that the signals exhibited phase shift tolerance for a difference between the light source wavelength and the Bragg wavelength of an FBG phase en/decoder when the two signals were multiplexed. However, the phase conditions of only the central wavelength among the ones forming a pulse were analyzed. For a more specific consideration, we calculated the phase of each wavelength forming the decoded pulse. In this report, the measured and calculated reflecting properties were compared and the reliability of the method was confirmed. We calculated the phase conditions of the decoded pulses and clarified the phase characteristics with regard to the phase modulation and the interference between pulses overlapped during decoding. For the realization of an asynchronous access, the FBG phase en/decoders should be designed so that the spreading time is the inverse of 2×(transmission rate).

    An optical CDMA (OCDMA) system is a flexible technology for future broadband multiple access networks. A secure OCDMA network in broadband optical access technologies is also becoming an issue of great importance. In this paper, we propose novel reconfigurable wavelength-time (W-T) optical codes that lead to secure transmission in OCDMA networks. The proposed W-T optical codes are constructed by using quasigroups (QGs) for wavelength hopping and one-dimensional optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) for time spreading; we call them QGs/OOCs. Both QGs and OOCs are randomly generated by a computer search to ensure that an eavesdropper could not improve its interception performance by making use of the coding structure. Then, the proposed reconfigurable QGs/OOCs can provide more codewords, and many different code set patterns, which differ in both wavelength and time positions for given code parameters. Moreover, the bit error probability of the proposed codes is analyzed numerically. To realize the proposed codes, a secure system is proposed by employing reconfigurable encoders/decoders based on array waveguide gratings (AWGs), which allow the users to change their codeword patterns to protect against eavesdropping. Finally, the probability of breaking a certain codeword in the proposed system is evaluated analytically. The results show that the proposed codes and system can provide a large codeword pattern, and decrease the probability of breaking a certain codeword, to enhance OCDMA network security.

    Broadband access network planning strategies with techno-economic calculations are important topics, when optimal broadband network deployments are considered. This paper analyzes optimal deployment combination of digital subscriber line technologies (xDSL) and fiber to the home technologies (FTTx), following different user bandwidth demand scenarios. For this reason, optimal placement of remote digital subscriber line multiplexer (RDSLAM) is examined. Furthermore, the article also discusses the economy of investments, depending on certain investment threshold and the reach of different xDSL technologies. Finally, the difference between broadband network deployment in a characteristic urban and rural area in Republic of Slovenia, in terms of required optical cable dig length per household is shown. A tree structure network model of a traditional copper access network is introduced. A dynamic programming logic, with recursion as a basis of a tree structure examination and evaluation of optimal network elements placement is used. The tree structure network model considers several real network parameters (e. g.: copper cable lengths, user coordinates, node coordinates). The main input for the optimization is a local loop distance between each user and a candidate node for RDSLAM placement. Modelling of copper access networks with a tree structure makes new extensions in planning optimization of broadband access networks. Optimization of network elements placement has direct influence on efficiency and profitability of broadband access telecommunication networks.

    In multi-hop wireless networks, communication quality depends on the route from a source to a destination. In this paper, we consider a one-dimensional multi-hop wireless network where nodes are distributed randomly and theoretically analyze the relation between communication quality and routing policy using a measure called the Expected Transmission Count (ETX), which is the predicted number of data transmissions required to send a packet over that link, including retransmissions. First, we theoretically analyze the mean length of links, the mean number of hops, and the mean route ETX, which is the sum of the ETXs of all links in a route, of Longest Path Routing (LPR), and Shortest Path Routing (SPR). Second, we propose Adjustable Routing (AR), an approximation to Optimum Routing (OR), which minimizes route ETX. We theoretically compute the above characteristic values of AR. We also theoretically compute a lower bound of the mean route ETX of OR. We compare LPR, SPR, and OR using the results of analyses and show differences between these algorithms in the route ETX.

    This paper proposes the Multimedia Pre-allocation WDMA (MP-WDMA) media access control (MAC) protocol to provide an efficient packet transfer service for metro-wavelength division multiple access (WDMA) networks. MP-WDMA considers three traffic types: constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate 1 (VBR1), and VBR2 traffic for a multimedia service as categorized in Multimedia WDMA (M-WDMA) MAC protocol. MP-WDMA is based on pre-allocation WDMA (P-WDMA), but the three traffic types are simultaneously allocated at one time slot, and one of them is selected through low bandwidth control signaling. Namely, a station assigns appropriate priority to input traffic, based on proposed traffic priority rules in MP-WDMA in order to determine the type of traffic. Accordingly, MP-WDMA can reduce station complexity as well as the possibility of idle time slot occurrences, compared with M-WDMA. Additionally, we analytically investigate the channel utilization and channel access delay of MP-WDMA and compare them with those of M-WDMA to find a proper MAC protocol for the networks. As a result, MP-WDMA supports maximally 30% higher channel utilization than M-WDMA regardless of channel and traffic conditions. Furthermore, MP-WDMA reduces the channel access delay of the delay-sensitive VBR2 traffic at the cost of increasing the channel access delay of the delay-insensitive VBR1 traffic. In this regard, MP-WDMA is suitable for the networks in terms of station complexity, channel utilization, and the channel access delay for VBR2 traffic.

    In this paper, we propose new joint transport and MAC protocols for ad hoc wireless networks based on an optimization framework. To overcome the practical and efficiency limitations of previous research, we develop a different framework based on independent sets and propose an implementable heuristic algorithm. We address the implementation issues of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results confirm the efficiency and fairness of our protocols.

    Divisible Load Theory (DLT) is an established mathematical framework to study Divisible Load Scheduling (DLS). However, traditional DLT does not address the scheduling of results back to source (i. e., result collection), nor does it comprehensively deal with system heterogeneity. In this paper, the DLSRCHETS (DLS with Result Collection on HET-erogeneous Systems) problem is addressed. The few papers to date that have dealt with DLSRCHETS, proposed simplistic LIFO (Last In, First Out) and FIFO (First In, First Out) type of schedules as solutions to DLSRCHETS. In this paper, a new polynomial time heuristic algorithm, SPORT (System Parameters based Optimized Result Transfer), is proposed as a solution to the DLSRCHETS problem. With the help of simulations, it is proved that the performance of SPORT is significantly better than existing algorithms. The other major contributions of this paper include, for the first time ever, (a) the derivation of the condition to identify the presence of idle time in a FIFO schedule for two processors, (b) the identification of the limiting condition for the optimality of FIFO and LIFO schedules for two processors, and (c) the introduction of the concept of equivalent processor in DLS for heterogeneous systems with result collection.

    Sensor networks that carry heterogeneous traffics and are responsible for reporting very time-critical important events necessitate an efficient and robust data dissemination framework. Designing such a framework, that can achieve both the reliability and delay guarantee while preserving the energy efficiency, namely multi-constrained QoS (MCQoS), is a challenging problem. Although there have been many research works on QoS routing for sensor networks, to the best of our knowledge, no one addresses the above three service parameters all together. In this paper, we propose a new aggregate routing model and a distributed aggregate routing algorithm (DARA) that implements the model for achieving MCQoS. DARA is designed for multi-sink, multipath and location aware network architecture. We develop probabilistic models for multipath reliability constraint, sojourn time of a packet at an intermediary node and node energy consumption. Delay-differentiated multi-speed packet forwarding and in-node packet scheduling mechanisms are also incorporated with DARA. The results of the simulations demonstrate that DARA effectively improves the reliability, delay guarantee and energy efficiency.

    Security for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has become an increasingly serious concern due to the requirement level of applications and hostile deployment areas. To enable secure services, cryptographic keys must be agreed upon by communicating nodes. Unfortunately, due to resource constraints, the key agreement problem in wireless sensor networks has become quite complicated. To tackle this problem, many public-key unrelated proposals which are considered more reasonable in cost than public key based approaches have been proposed so far including random based key pre-distribution schemes. One prominent branch of these proposals is threshold random key pre-distribution schemes. However these schemes still introduce either communication overhead or both communication and computational overheads to resource constrained sensor nodes. Considering this issue, we propose an efficient ID-based threshold random key pre-distribution scheme that not only retains all the highly desirable properties of the schemes including high probability of establishing pairwise keys, tolerance of node compromise but also significantly reduces communication and computational costs of each node. The proposed scheme is validated by a thorough analysis in terms of network resiliency and related overheads. In addition, we also propose a supplementary method to significantly improve the security of pairwise keys established indirectly.

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become a key technology for ubiquitous computing environments. In WSNs, battery recharge or replacement is impossible because sensors are left unattended after deployment. Therefore, WSNs need a networking protocol scheme to increase the life time of sensor nodes. The clustering technique is an efficient approach for reducing energy consumption in wireless sensor networks. In cluster topology, however, there is a problem which causes a large amount of energy consumption of cluster head. In addition, in the sparsely deployed sensor field, mesh topology can be more energy-efficient than cluster topology. In this paper, we propose a Hybrid Cluster Mesh (HCM) scheme, which recognizes the density of neighbor nodes and each node decides its topology itself, and HCM-RO (reorganization) scheme which reorganizes clusters. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid topology control scheme is more energy-efficient than each topology of cluster or mesh.

    Distributed denial-of-service attacks on public servers have recently become more serious. Most of them are SYN flood attacks, since the malicious attackers can easily exploit the TCP specification to generate traffic making public servers unavailable. We need a defense method which can protect legitimate traffic so that end users can connect the target servers during such attacks. In this paper, we propose a new framework, in which all of the TCP connections to the victim servers from a domain are maintained at the gateways of the domain (i. e., near the clients). We call the nodes maintaining the TCP connection defense nodes. The defense nodes check whether arriving packets are legitimate or not by maintaining the TCP connection. That is, the defense nodes delegate reply packets to the received connection request packets and identify the legitimate packets by checking whether the clients reply to the reply packets. Then, only identified traffic are relayed via overlay networks. As a result, by deploying the defense nodes at the gateways of a domain, the legitimate packets from the domain are relayed apart from other packets including attack packets and protected. Our simulation results show that our method can protect legitimate traffic from the domain deploying our method. We also describe the deployment scenario of our defense mechanism.

    In this paper, we study the power control for the adaptive rate system that adapts the data rate to the channel and interference condition by adjusting the SINR requirement. The power control technique aims to decrease the interference to obtain the satisfactory throughput. We first find the optimal CINR that allows as many users as possible to transmit their data with the satisfied throughput requirements. Then we use the optimal CINR as the target CINR in the proposed distributed power control algorithm. During the operation of this algorithm, we let each user adjust the transmit power for several iterations to obtain the satisfactory CINR, which in turn leads to the satisfactory throughput. We show that the user can meet its throughput requirement by increasing the number of iterations, and once the user meets its throughput requirement, this condition will hold from then on. Furthermore, it is proven that the throughput can converge to the throughput requirement for each user.

    In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems, the receiver must extract each transmitted signal from received signals. Iterative signal detection with belief propagation (BP) can improve the error rate performance, by increasing the number of detection and decoding iterations in MIMO systems. This number of iterations is, however, limited in actual systems because each additional iteration increases latency, receiver size, and so on. This paper proposes a convergence acceleration technique that can achieve better error rate performance with fewer iterations than the conventional iterative signal detection. Since the Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) of one bit propagates to all other bits with BP, improving some LLRs improves overall decoder performance. In our proposal, all the coded bits are divided into groups and only one group is detected in each iterative signal detection whereas in the conventional approach, each iterative signal detection run processes all coded bits, simultaneously. Our proposal increases the frequency of initial LLR update by increasing the number of iterative signal detections and decreasing the number of coded bits that the receiver detects in one iterative signal detection. Computer simulations show that our proposal achieves better error rate performance with fewer detection and decoding iterations than the conventional approach.

    In this paper, a new fractional sample rate conversion (SRC) scheme based on a direct insertion/cancellation scheme is proposed. This scheme is suitable for signals that are sampled at a high sample rate and converted to a lower sample rate. The direct insertion/cancellation scheme may achieve low-complexity and lower power consumption as compared to the other SRC techniques. However, the direct insertion/cancellation technique suffers from large aliasing and distortion. The aliasing from an adjacent channel interferes the desired signal and degrades the performance. Therefore, a modified direct insertion/cancellation scheme is proposed in order to realize high performance resampling.

    Recently, it has been shown in the literature that in a relaying network utilizing multiple relay precoding techniques, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at each destination node will scale linearly with the number of relays K, which is referred to as the distributed array gain (DAG) K. In this paper, we focus on the performance of multiple relay precoding based on limited channel state information (CSI) feedback, which is different from the prior studies that assume perfect CSI at each of the relay nodes. Our analysis shows that the conventional limited feedback scheme fails to obtain the DAG K, which is a consequence of the phase ambiguity introduced by the channel quantization function. Based on the theoretical analysis, we propose a novel feedback and precoding procedure, and prove that the proposed procedure can obtain the DAG K with only one additional feedback bit for quantizing each relay-destination channel compared with the conventional scheme. Simulation results verify that with the proposed procedure, the SNR performance is effectively improved when the number of relays K is small, and scales linearly with K in relatively large K regime.

    We propose an implementation of the tapped delay line adaptive array (TDLAA) at the base station for improving the BER performance of asynchronous multi-user mobile communication over fast fading channels using multiple antennas. The data of each user at the mobile station, which applies two transmit antennas, are encoded by Space Time Block Code (STBC). The proposed scheme transmits the pilot signal and information data in alternate time slots. We derive performance criteria for designing such a scheme under the assumption that the fading is classified as fast fading. We show that the proposed scheme can suppress co-channel interference (CCI) and defeat Doppler spread effectively.

    The spectral efficiency of cooperative relaying in interference-limited environments in which a given channel is spatially reused is investigated. Cooperative relaying is a promising technique that uses neighboring stations to forward the data toward the destination in order to achieve spatial diversity gain. It has been reported that by introducing cooperative relaying into communication between an isolated source-destination pair, the error rate or spectral efficiency is generally improved. However, it is not intuitively clear whether cooperative relaying can improve the performance in interference-limited environments because the simultaneous transmission of multiple stations increases the number of interference signals. Assuming the most fundamental cooperative relaying arrangement, which consists of only one relay station, numerical results reveal that cooperative relaying is not always superior to non-cooperative single-hop and two-hop transmissions in terms of spectral efficiency.

    Pulse radars with UWB signals are promising as a high-resolution imaging technique that can be used for the non-destructive measurement of surface details in industrial products such as antennas and aircraft. We have already proposed a fast 3-D imaging algorithm, SEABED, that utilizes a reversible transform between the time delay and the target boundary. However, data acquisition is time-consuming when obtaining an accurate image because it assumes a mono-static radar with 2-D scanning of an antenna. In this paper, we utilize linear array antennas and propose a fast and accurate imaging algorithm. We extend the reversible transform for mono-static radars to apply to bi-static radars to reduce the data acquisition time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified with numerical simulations and experiments.

    The H.264/AVC standard provides several new error-resilient features to enable the reliable transmission of compressed video signals over lossy packet networks. Flexible Macroblock Ordering (FMO) is one of the most interesting resilient features within the H.264/AVC standard. Unlike former standards, in which slices were constructed out of consecutive raster scan macroblocks, FMO suggests new slices composed of spatially distributed Macroblocks (MBs), and organized in a mixed-up fashion. H.264/AVC specifies seven types of FMO. The standard defines also an explicit FMO type (Type 6), which allows explicitly assignment of each MB within the frame to any available slice groups. Therefore new FMO types can be used and integrated into H264/AVC without violating the standard. In this paper we propose a new Explicit Chessboard-Wipe (ECW) Flexible Macroblocks Ordering (FMO) technique, which outperforms all other FMO types. The new ECW ordering results in effective error scattering which maximizes the number of correctly received macroblocks located around corrupted macroblocks, leading to better error concealment. Performance evaluations demonstrate that the proposed Explicit FMO approach outperforms all the FMO types. Both subjective and objective visual quality comparative study has been also carried out in order to validate the proposed approach.

    Jeong et al. recently have proposed a strong ID-based key distribution scheme in order to achieve security against long-term key reveal and session state reveal attacks. In this letter, we show that, unfortunately, the ID-based key distribution scheme is vulnerable to an impersonation attack such that anyone can manipulate public transcripts generated by a user to impersonate the original user.

    IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access (BWA) technology is suitable for providing multimedia applications without accessing the wired networks directly. Although IEEE 802.16 standard well defines the quality of service (QoS) framework, it makes no specific recommendation with regard to the bandwidth allocation. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for allocating bandwidth in response to dynamic changes in the arrival rate such that the total bandwidth is efficiently utilized.

    To conserve energy, periodic active/sleep dynamics is adopted in wireless sensor networks. At the same time, the QoS guarantees, such as packet delay, packet loss ratio and network throughput need to be satisfied. We develop a finite queuing model for sensor nodes and derive network performance for contention-based wireless sensor networks with synchronous wakeup patterns. Furthermore, the impact of active/sleep duty cycle, time scale and node buffer size on the tradeoff between energy efficiency and QoS guarantees is studied based on the model. Simulation results well match our analytical results and validate the accuracy of our model and approach.

    A lot of emerging applications like advanced telemedicine and surveillance systems, demand sensors to deliver multimedia content with precise level of QoS enhancement. Minimizing energy in sensor networks has been a much explored research area but guaranteeing QoS over sensor networks still remains an open issue. In this letter we propose a cross-layer approach combining Network and MAC layers, for QoS enhancement in wireless multimedia sensor networks. In the network layer a statistical estimate of sensory QoS parameters is performed and a nearoptimal genetic algorithmic solution is proposed to solve the NP-complete QoS-routing problem. On the other hand the objective of the proposed MAC algorithm is to perform the QoS-based packet classification and automatic adaptation of the contention window. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocol is capable of providing lower delay and better throughput, at the cost of reasonable energy consumption, in comparison with other existing sensory QoS protocols.

    In this paper, we design an adaptive mobility-supporting MAC (AM-MAC) protocol for mobile sensor networks. In our protocol, as in S-MAC [1], each virtual cluster that consists of a subset of sensor nodes has its own listen-sleep schedule. Hence, when a mobile sensor node moves into a new virtual cluster, it needs to adapt to the listen-sleep schedule of the corresponding virtual cluster in a timely and energy efficient manner. To this end, in our protocol, we utilize schedule information on border nodes between virtual clusters. This allows us to implement fast and energy efficient listen-sleep schedule adaptation for mobile nodes, which consists of two main functions: energy efficient secondary listen period and smart scheduling adaptation. Simulation results show that our protocol can provide fast schedule adaptation while achieving energy efficiency.

    This paper considers the problem of target location estimation in a wireless sensor network based on IEEE 842.15.4 radio signals and proposes a novel implementation of the maximum likelihood (ML) location estimator based on the Cross-Entropy (CE) method. In the proposed CE method, the ML criterion is translated into a stochastic approximation problem which can be solved effectively. Simulations that compare the performance of a ML target estimation scheme employing the conventional Newton method and the conjugate gradient method are presented. The simulation results show that the proposed CE method provides higher location estimation accuracy throughout the sensor field.

    The signalling protocol vulnerability opens DDoS problem in Mobile WiMAX networks. This letter proposes an authentication method that uses the unrevealed upper 64bits of Cipher-based MAC as a solution. It runs for MSs in idle mode and reduces the calculation complexity by 59% under DDoS attack while incurring 1% overhead under normal condition.

    In time-varying channels, the channel state information available at the transmitter (CSIT) is outdated due to inherent time delay between the uplink channel estimation and the downlink data transmission in TDD systems. In this letter, we propose an iterative precoding method and a linear decoding method which are both based on minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) criteria to mitigate the interference among data streams and users created by outdated CSIT for multiuser MIMO downlink systems. Analysis and simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the impairment of the outdated CSIT and improve the system capacity.

    The fairness solution without deteriorating the system sum-rate is a challenge under a total energy constraint. One regenerative strategy is proposed to improve the fairness for bi-directional three-node relaying, which is based on decode-and-forward technique with network coding and power optimization. In this letter, the application of network coding decreases the number of transmission phases from traditional four phases to three phases. Moreover, the proposed power optimization algorithm can be applied in practical system, which transforms max-min optimization problem to linear programming (LP) with low complexity. Numerical simulations shows this strategy enhances the minimum of unidirectional transmission rate up to 94% as compared to a four-phase bi-directional strategy, and up to 46% as compared to the three-phase bi-directional strategy with equal-power allocation.

    3GPP evolved packet system (EPS) is an all-IP based system that supports various access networks such as LTE, HSPA/HSPA+ and non-3GPP networks. Recently, the support of IP flows with packet level QoS profiles has been added to the requirements of the EPS. This paper proposes an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme that supports the QoS of such IP flows in the 3G LTE access network of the EPS. Defining the retransmission as a critical factor for QoS, the proposed scheme applies different maximum packet error probability Pmax to each packet when selecting the AMC transmission mode. In determining Pmax, the QoS constraints as well as channel condition are considered, balancing two objectives: the satisfaction of the QoS and the maximization of spectral efficiency. Simulations show that it is able to reduce both delay violation and retransmission, while improving throughput in comparison with an existing scheme.

    In this letter, we propose a simple detection ordering which can be applied to successive interference cancellation in lowcomplexity equalization of OFDM in doubly selective channels. Since the detection ordering can be determined solely on the basis of pilot symbol arrangement, the proposed scheme can lead to a significant performance improvement without additional complexity on the premise that pilot symbols are employed primarily for channel estimation.

    Some OFDMA-based wireless commuication systems, e. g., Wireless Broadband Internet (WiBro) or Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), support frequency reuse of 1 to maximize spectral efficiency. One of the efficient methods to reduce co-channel interference (CCI) caused by frequency reuse is fractional frequency reuse (FFR). In this paper, we propose and validate a novel frequency partitioning method and subcarrier assignment mechanism to improve system and individual capacity of mobile systems using FFR.

    The dynamic channel selection mechanism used in existing multi-channel MAC protocols selects an idle data channel based on channel usage information from one-hop neighbor nodes. However, this method can cause multi-channel hidden node problem in multi-hop wireless networks. This letter proposes a new approach to channel selection. Nodes snoop data channels during idle times and then select an idle data channel within the carrier sensing range using both the snooping results and the channel usage information. Our simulation results verify that the proposed channel selection approach can effectively avoid the multi-channel hidden node problem and improve the networkwide performance.

    An adaptive chirp beamforming method is proposed to solve the bias problem in the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of wideband chirp signals that have identical time-frequency parameters yet emanate from different directions. The proposed method, based on the steered minimum variance (STMV) method, exploits the time-frequency structure of a chirp signal to improve the DOA estimation performance by effectively suppressing the wideband chirp interferences causing the bias. Simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    Lightweight single-layer slotted waveguide array antennas are fabricated using plastic materials with metal-plating. A plastic material that has good heat-radiation properties is investigated. Three types of antennas are fabricated by milling, using ABS resin, heat-radiating plastic, and aluminum alloy. In measurements, all three types of antennas are confirmed to have almost the same VSWR and gain in the 25GHz frequency band.

    We present design procedures for using conducting wires in A-sandwich junctions to achieve high transmission performance; benchtest results validate the procedures. The scattering characteristics of the junction are obtained by solving the electric field integral equation of volumetric equivalent currents. The transmission performance is evaluated by subtracting the scattered fields of the same-sized A-sandwich panel in order to offset the effect of edge diffraction. Optimum wire width is determined by examining transmission performance with different arrangements. The designed junction achieves high transmission performance. The measured scattering characteristics of a bench model demonstrate the validity of the presented method.

    This letter presents a method that offers the simple calculation of the electric shielding effectiveness of a collinear unequal narrow slot array in a planar conducting screen. An integral equation for an aperture electric field on the unequal narrow slot array is used instead of coupled integral equations for a multiple slot and solved by applying Galerkin's method of moments. Numerical results illustrate the shielding effectiveness and aperture electric field distributions of the collinear unequal two-narrow slot array by using single integral equation.

    Combining relaying and multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transmission is a generic way to overcome the channel-fading impairments. Best antenna selection is a simple but efficient MIMO method that achieves the full diversity and also serves as a lower bound reference of MIMO performance. For a dual-hop MIMO system with an ideal amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying gain and best antenna selection, we provide a probability density function (PDF) of received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and an analytic BER equation when using M-ary PSK in Rayleigh fading channels. The analytic result is shown to exactly match with simulated one. Furthermore, the effect of link unbalance between the first hop and the second hop, due to differences in the number of antennas deployed in both hops as well as in the average power of channel coefficients, on the BER performance is numerically investigated and the results show that the links with better balance give better performance.
