    The widespread adoption of IP-based telecommunication core networks is leading to a paradigm shift in international interconnection where the traditional Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) interconnection between telecommunication networks is being replaced by IP interconnection. IP eXchange (IPX) is an emerging paradigm in international IP interconnection that has novel requirements, such as an end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee across multiple carriers. IPX is a future direction for international telecommunications, but it is not easy to understand the overall concept of IPX because it is derived from a wide variety of services, technical knowledge, and telecommunication backgrounds. The confusion and complexity of the technical elements hinder the development of IPX. Thus, this paper clarifies the state-of-the-art technical elements from an IPX perspective and discusses ongoing challenges and emerging services on IPX, particularly end-to-end QoS, Voice over IP issues, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) interworking, and Long Term Evolution (LTE) roaming. This paper also surveys published academic research studies that were not focused primarily on IPX but which are likely to provide potential solutions to the challenges.

    This paper presents a low-power LDPC decoder that can be used in Multimedia Wireless Sensor Networks. Three low power design techniques are proposed in the decoder design: a layered decoding algorithm, a modified Benes network and a modified memory bypassing scheme. The proposed decoder is implemented in TSMC 0.13µm, 1.2V CMOS process. Experiments show that when the clock frequency is 32MHz, the power consumption of the proposed decoder is 38.4mW, the energy efficiency is 53.3pJ/bit/ite and the core area is 1.8mm2.

    In this paper we establish a secure communication model where eavesdropper and intended receiver have multiple antennas. We use cooperation and jamming to achieve physical layer security. First, we study how to allocate power between the information bearing signal and the jamming signal. Second, based on this model, we also jointly optimize both the information bearing signal weights and the jamming signal weights to improve physical layer security. The optimal power allocation and the weights are obtained via an iteration algorithm to maximize the secrecy rate. Comparing with equal power allocation and some other different methods, it shows that using cooperative relaying and jamming can significantly improve the physical layer security from the simulation results.

    We propose an efficient network design algorithm that realizes shared protection. The algorithm iteratively improves the degree of wavelength resource usage and fiber utilization. To achieve this, we newly define two metrics to evaluate the degree of wavelength resource usage of a pair of working/backup paths and the fiber utilization efficiency. The proposed method iteratively redesigns groups of paths that are selected in the order determined by the metrics. A numerical analysis verifies that the proposed algorithm can substantially reduce the required wavelength resources and hence fiber cost. It is also verified that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is small enough to terminate within practicable time.

    In Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), sensor nodes consume their limited battery energy to send and receive data packets for data transmission. If some sensor nodes transmit data packets more frequently due to imbalance in the network topology or traffic flows, they experience higher energy consumption. And if the sensor nodes are not recharged, they will be turned off from the lack of battery energy which will degrade network sustainability. In order to resolve this problem, this paper proposes an Energy-aware MAC Protocol (EMP), which adaptively decides on the size of the channel polling cycle consisting of the sleep state (not to communicate with its target node) and the listening state (to awaken to receive data packets), according to the network traffic condition. Moreover, in accordance with the remaining energy state of the sensor node, the minimum size of the channel polling cycle is increased for better energy saving. For performance evaluation and comparison, we develop a Markov chain-based analytical model and an event-driven simulator. Simulation results show that a sensor node with EMP effectively reduces its energy consumption in imbalanced network condition and traffic flows, while latency somewhat increases under insufficient remaining energy. As a consequence, a holistic perspective for enhanced network sustainability can be studied in consideration of network traffic condition as well as the remaining energy states of sensor nodes.

    In this paper, performances of two different virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission schemes — spatial multiplexing (SM) and space-time block coding (STBC) — in a correlated wireless sensor network are analyzed. By utilizing a complex Wishart distribution, we investigate the statistical properties of a correlated virtual MIMO channel between the sensors and data collector that is used in the performance analysis of each MIMO transmission mode. Distributed sensors then transmit their data cooperatively to the data collector by choosing a proper transmission mode adaptively based on the channel conditions and spatial correlation among the sensors. Furthermore, after analyzing the energy efficiencies of SM and STBC, we propose a new energy efficient mode switching rule between SM and STBC. Finally, by analytically deriving the required transmit energy of the proposed adaptive transmission scheme, the manner in which the spatial correlation influences the energy consumption is shown. This suggests a cooperating node scheduling protocol that makes energy consumption less sensitive to the variation of the spatial correlation.

    We propose a novel propagation measurement scheme for terrestrial TV signal indoor reception based on a virtual array technique. The system proposed in this paper carries out two-branch recording of target signals and the reference signal. By using the signal phase reference in the reference signal, we clarify the spatial propagation characteristics obtained from the two-dimensional virtual array outputs. Outdoor measurements were performed first to investigate the validity of the proposed measurement system. The results confirm its effectiveness in accurately determining the direction-of-arrival (DOA). We then investigated the propagation characteristics in an indoor environment. The angular spectrum obtained showed clear wave propagation structure. Thus, our proposed system is promising as a very accurate measurement tool for indoor propagation analysis.

    The problem of a finite monopole antenna driven by a coaxial cable is revisited. On the basis of a variable bound approach, the radiated field around a monopole antenna can be represented in terms of the discrete modal summation. This theoretical model allows us to avoid the difficulties experienced when dealing with integral equations having different wavenumber spectra and ensures a solution in a convergent series form so that it is numerically efficient. The behaviors of the input admittance and the current distribution to characterize the monopole antenna are shown for different coaxial-antenna geometries and also compared with other existing results.

    In this paper, a direct/cooperative relay switched single carrier-frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) using amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol and spectrum division/adaptive subcarrier allocation (SDASA) is proposed. Using SDASA, the transmit SC signal spectrum is divided into sub-blocks, to each of which a different set of subcarriers (resource block) is adaptively allocated according to the channel conditions of mobile terminal (MT)-relay station (RS) link, RS-base station (BS) link, and MT-BS link. Cooperative relay does not always provide higher capacity than the direct communication. Switching between direct communication and cooperative relay is done depending on the channel conditions of MT-RS, RS-BS, and MT-BS links. We evaluate the achievable channel capacity by the Monte-Carlo numerical computation method. It is shown that the proposed scheme can reduce the transmit power by about 6.0 (2.0)dB compared to the direct communication (the cooperative AF relay) for a 1%-outage capacity of 3.0bps/Hz.

    Initial cell search in wideband code-division multiple-access (W-CDMA) systems is a challenging process. On the one hand, channel impairments such as multipath fading, Doppler shift, and noise create frequency and time offsets in the received signal. On the other hand, the residual synchronization error of the crystal oscillator at the mobile station also causes time and frequency offsets. Such offsets can affect the ability of a mobile station to perform cell search. Previous work concentrated on cell synchronization algorithms that considered multipath channels and frequency offsets, but ignored clock and timing offsets due to device tolerances. This work discusses a robust initial cell search algorithm, and quantifies its performance in the presence of frequency and time offsets due to two co-existing problems: channel impairments and clock drift at the receiver. Another desired performance enhancement is the reduction of power consumption of the receiver, which is mainly due to the computational complexity of the algorithms. This power reduction can be achieved by reducing the computational complexity by a divide and conquer strategy during the synchronization process.

    As a flexible and cost-efficient scalable Internet access network, we studied architectures, protocols, and design optimizations of the Wireless Internet-access Mesh NETwork (WIMNET). WIMNET is composed of multiple access points (APs) connected through multihop wireless communications on IEEE 802.11 standards. The increasing popularity of real-time applications such as IP-phones and IP-TV means that they should be supported in WIMNET. However, the contention resolution mechanism using a random backoff-time in the CSMA/CA protocol of 802.11 standards is not sufficient for handling real-time traffic in multihop wireless communications. In this paper, we propose a Fixed Backoff-time Switching (FBS) method for the CSMA/CA protocol to improve the real-time traffic performance in WIMNET by giving the necessary activation chances to each link. We implement our proposal on the QualNet simulator, and verify its effectiveness through simulations on three network topologies with four scenarios.

    Automatic modulation classification (AMC) involves extracting a set of unique features from the received signal. Accuracy and uniqueness of the features along with the appropriate classification algorithm determine the overall performance of AMC systems. Accuracy of any modulation feature is usually limited by the blindness of the signal information such as carrier frequency, symbol rate etc. Most papers do not sufficiently consider these impairments and so do not directly target practical applications. The AMC system proposed herein is trained with probable input signals, and the appropriate decision tree should be chosen to achieve robust classification. Six unique features are used to classify eight analog and digital modulation schemes which are widely used by low frequency mobile emergency radios around the globe. The Proposed algorithm improves the classification performance of AMC especially for the low SNR regime.

    Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with antenna selection are practical in that they can alleviate the computational complexity at the receiver and achieve good reception performance. Channel correlation, not just carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), has a great impact on reception performance in MIMO channels. We propose a practical receive antenna subset selection algorithm with reduced complexity that uses the condition number of the partial channel matrix and a predetermined CNR threshold. This paper describes the algorithm and its performance evaluation by both computer simulation and indoor experiments using a prototype receiver and received signals obtained in an actual mobile outdoor experiment. The results confirm that our proposed method provides good bit error rate performance by setting the CNR threshold properly.

    In Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-Advanced, heterogeneous networks where femtocells and picocells are overlaid onto macrocells are being extensively discussed in addition to traditional well-planned macrocell deployment to improve further the system throughput. In heterogeneous networks, cell range expansion (CRE), which is a technique for expanding the cell radius of picocells by biasing the handover criteria, e.g., the downlink received signal power, is applied so that the UEs will more frequently select the picocells. This paper investigates a fractional transmission power control (TPC) method suitable for the heterogeneous networks that employ CRE in the LTE-Advanced uplink and evaluates the cell-edge user throughput and cell throughput performance. Simulation results (2-8 picocells and 25 (30) UEs are located within one macrocell with a uniform (cluster) distribution, the difference in transmission power between the macro and picocells is 16dB, and the Typical Urban and Pedestrian-A channel models are employed) show that almost the same cell-edge user throughput is obtained by setting an appropriate difference in the target received signal power between the macro and picocells according to the CRE offset value.

    UWB (Ultra Wideband) radar offers great promise for advanced near field sensors due to its high range resolution. In particular, it is suitable for rescue or resource exploration robots, which need to identify a target in low visibility or acoustically harsh environments. Recently, radar algorithms that actively coordinate multiple scattered components have been developed to enhance the imaging range beyond what can be achieved by synthesizing a single scattered component. Although we previously developed an accurate algorithm for imaging shadow regions with low computational complexity using derivatives of observed ranges for double scattered signals, the algorithm yields inaccurate images under the severe interference situations that occur with complex-shaped or multiple objects or in noisy environments. This is because small range fluctuations arising from interference or random noises can produce non-negligible image degradation owing to inaccuracy in the range derivative calculation. As a solution to this difficulty, this paper proposes a novel imaging algorithm that does not use the range derivatives of doubly scattered signals, and instead extracts a feature of expansive distributions of the observed ranges, using a unique property inherent to the doubly scattering mechanism. Numerical simulation examples of complex-shaped or multiple targets are presented to demonstrate the distinct advantage of the proposed algorithm which creates more accurate images even for complicated objects or in noisy situations.

    Critical infrastructures are falsely believed to be safe when they are isolated from the Internet. However, the recent appearance of Stuxnet demonstrated that isolated networks are no longer safe. We observe that a better intrusion detection scheme can be established based on the unique features of critical infrastructures. In this paper, we propose a whitelist-based detection system. Network and application-level whitelists are proposed, which are combined to form a novel cross-layer whitelist. Through experiments, we confirm that the proposed whitelists can exactly detect attack packets, which cannot be achieved by existing schemes.

    A precoding design for double space-time block coding (STBC) system is investigated in this paper, i.e., the joint processing of STBC and dirty paper coding (DPC) techniques. These techniques are used for avoiding dual spatial streams interference and improving the transmitter diversity. The DPC system is interference free on multi-user or multi-antenna. The STBC transceiver can provide the transmit diversity. Due to the benefits about offered by the STBC and DPC techniques, we propose a new scheme called STBC-DPC system. The transceiver design involves the following procedures. First, the ordering QR decomposition of channel matrix and the maximum likelihood (ML) one-dimensional searching algorithm are proposed to acquire reliable performance. Next, the channel on/off assignment using the water filling algorithm, i.e., maximum capacity criterion, is proposed to overcome the deep fading channel problem. Finally, the STBC-DPC system with the modulus operation to limit the transmit signal level, i.e., the Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) scheme, is proposed to achieve low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) performance. Simulation results confirm that the proposed STBC-DPC/THP with water filling ML algorithm can provide the low PAPR and excellent bit error rate (BER) performances.

    In this letter, we propose an error surface modeling-based segmentalized motion estimation for video coding. We proposed two algorithms previously, one was MBQME [1] and the other is HMBQME [2]. However, these algorithms are not based on locally quadratic MC prediction errors around an integer-pixel motion vector and the hypothesis that the local error plane is a convex function. Therefore, we propose an error surface considered segmentalized modeling algorithm. In this scheme, the tendency of the error surface is first assessed. Using the Sobel operation at the error surface, we classify the error surface region as plain or textured. For plain regions, conventional MBQME is appropriate as the quarter-pixel motion estimation method. For textured regions, we search the additional interpolation points for more accurate modeling. After the interpolation, we perform double precision mathematical modeling so as to find the best motion vector (MV). Experiments show that the proposed scheme has better PSNR performance than conventional modeling algorithms with minimum operation time.
