In wood gasification, by-production of tar and coke causes problems such as clogging of pipeline, but the formation mechanisms are not clear. The wood components are considered to behave differently in this process. In this study, we conducted pyrolysis experiments of isolated components of wood, that is cellulose, lignin, xylan, and glucomannan, in a wide temperature range up to 1000°C, to investigate the tar and coke formation behavior of each component.
Degradation behaviors of lignin-derived compounds in atmospheric pressure plasma were studied under dielectric barrier discharges for phenol, guaiacol, and syringol, the simplest monomers of p-hydroxyphenyl (H), guaiacyl (G), and syringyl (S) nuclei, respectively. Phenol tended to produce more char than the other two, while syringol produced less char and more gases, mainly H2 and CO. Adding H2 to carrier gas (Ar) hydrogenated unsaturated hydrocarbons in the product gas and suppressed char formation in all samples. These results indicate that plasma may be promising for clean gasification with suppressed coking.
Hydrogen is one of the future energy carriers that is distributed from a renewable energy surplus, and does not discharge CO2 and other air pollutions onsite. However, it must be handled carefully in order to be used safely and prevent negative economic and societal impacts when implemented as an energy source. For these reasons, the technologies of “carbon dioxide Recycling (CO2 Recycling)” are receiving much attention in Japan and Europe. The advancement of technologies regarding verylow temperature and high-pressure compression is expected to lead an important role in realizing a hydrogen-implemented society in the sense of three aspects: 1) Energy storage, 2) Carbon capture and recycling, and 3) Energy portability.
Biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel have been promoted as a climate change solution for the transport sector, including automobiles. Biofuels blended with conventional fuels have also been tested in the marine sector to comply with the IMO GHG regulations. As most biofuels are currently produced from land-based crops, there is a concern that increased consumption of biofuels may require agricultural expansion at a global scale, leading to additional carbon emissions. This effect is called Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC). This survey report describes a series of sustainability criteria and GHG emissions of biofuels used in the transport sector by referring to the EU Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001/EU (EU-RED II). High ILUC-risk feedstocks are determined and the share of biofuels produced from food and feed crops is intended to be limited and gradually reduced to zero. In contrast, low ILUC-risk biofuels are certified, and advanced biofuels produced from wasted biomass are recommended for future use.
