The possibility that stretching vibrations of Hydrogen bonds (N-H…O) mediated by π-electron system (O=C-N), as is seen in a polypeptide chain, are coupled together has been proposed by one of us (I. O., Research reports of the Faculty of Engineering, Nagoya University. 4 68. 1951).
In Part I of the present paper, the similar cases of aqueous solution of alcohols and of phenol, and of carbon tetrachloride solution of N-methyl acetamide were discussed according to this point of view both on the ground of the resonance theory and, for the latter case, of the quantum mechanical calculations. The distinguishable increase in the absorption intensity of the N-H a tretching vibrations, being observed about 3μ in wavelength was explained. It was stressed that the excited states of the protons play an important role.In Part II statistical mechanics was introduced to the problem, and the variations of the absorption intensity with concentration and with temperature were explained qualitatively.
