    This review aims to evaluate whether the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode is the better protocol for dentin adhesion by universal adhesives. A total of 15 articles were included in the meta-analysis. Two reviewers performed a literature search up to October 2020in four databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Without considering the difference in aging mode, the analysis of the immediate and long-term bond strength of dentin showed that there was no statistical significance between the etch-and-rinse and self-etch mode of universal adhesive, and the long-term bond strength decreased relative to the immediate. In vitro studies suggest that prior acid etching did not improve bond performance. Whether from the perspective of long-term bonding performance or simplifying operating procedures, the self-etch mode is preferred.

    We evaluated twelve commercially available bulk-fill resin composites to determine the colorimetric changes that occurred as a result of the photo-polymerization reaction. Samples of the resin composites were prepared as disks 8 mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness. A colorimeter was used to measure the color of samples on a black background before and after the polymerization processed had been initiated. As results, each of the photo-initiated bulk-fill resin composites tested except for Beautifil Bulk A showed a significant color difference more than that of conventional resin composites. Bulk Base Flow became darker, whereas Beautifil Bulk Flow became clearly lighter. All resin composites except for Bulk Base Flow became less yellow. Thus, Beautifil Bulk A exhibited the least color change among all the bulk-fill resin composites. However, this color change showed a marked change (NBS units) as observed by the human naked eye.

    This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aging on the color stability and bond strengths of dual-cured resin cements containing amine or amine-free self-initiators. Three dual-cured and one light-cured resin cements were used. The covered (by lithium disilicate ceramic disks) and uncovered groups (n=10) were included. Color measurements were tested after 24 h, 10,000 and 20,000 thermal cycles (TCs). Micro-shear bond strengths (µSBS) were tested after 24 h, 10,000 and 20,000 TCs, and failure modes were analyzed (n=14). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test were implemented for color difference (ΔE*ab) and µSBS (α=0.05). The mean ΔE*ab difference was significant among groups (p<0.001). The lowest ΔE*ab values were obtained for dual-cured resin cement with amine-free self-initiators dual-cured cement after aging in all dual-cured resin cements, and the µSBS of the dual-cured resin cements on ceramic was significantly higher than that of the light-cured ones after aging (p<0.001).

    This study aimed to investigate the effects of silicates on the proliferation and odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) in vitro. HDPCs were cultured in the presence of calcium silicate (CS) extracts, while calcium hydroxide (CH) extracts and culture medium without CH or CS were used as the control groups. The calcium and phosphorus ion concentrations in the CS were similar to those in the control groups, but the concentration of silicon ions in the CS extracts was higher than that in the control groups. HDPCs cultured with CS and CH extracts at dilution of 1/128 proliferated significantly more than those cultured with the control treatments. CS extracts promoted cell migration, enhanced the expression of odontogenic marker genes and conspicuously increased odontogenesis-related protein production and the release of cytokines, suggesting that CS bioactive ceramics possess excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity and have the potential for application as pulp-capping agents.

    This study aimed to determine functionality and mechanical properties of dental splints. Five splints were tested: a control splint Filtek Z350XT (ZF), two splints with G-Fix (GF) and Light Fix (LF), and two wire-composite splints with ZF (ZW) and Ortho Connect Flow (CW). Periotest values, elastic modulus, flexural, compressive, and diametral tensile strength were measured. ZW and CW showed no significant differences in flexibility in labial or occlusal pressure of upper central incisors. LF, GF, and ZF did not differ in labial or palatal pressure. ZW and CW had higher flexibility than LF, GF, and ZF. LF had the lowest flexural and compressive strength but the highest diametral tensile strength. This study showed that ZW and CW might be options for flexible splints, whereas LF and GF would be options for rigid splints. Additionally, CW and LF/GF might be simpler alternatives to ZW and ZF, respectively.

    Monolithic zirconia crowns bonded to zirconia abutments have become more commonly used in the construction of cement-retained implant superstructures. The present study aimed to examine the effects of laser surface treatments on the bond strength of two resin cements to zirconia. Three types of surfaces were examined: untreated, alumina blasted, and ytterbium laser treated; and two types of resin cements: 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement and composite resin cement. Half of the specimens were subjected to a thermocycling process. Subsequently, a shear bond test was carried out. In addition, surface roughness was measured for each surface type. The results showed that laser treatment increased zirconia surface roughness and that laser treatment significantly increased shear bond strength after the thermocycling of both cement types compared to no treatment. Our experimental results suggested that ytterbium laser surface treatment of zirconia increased the bond strength of resin cements.

    This study investigated the impact of different veneering design on the fracture resistance and failure mode of layered translucent zirconia crowns, compared to the full monolithic zirconia crowns. Ninety crowns with different designs were divided into six groups (n=15); one fully contoured monolithic crown (FMC), one fully veneered with porcelain (FVC), or four partially veneered designs. All crowns were thermo-cycled, and then loaded to failure in a universal testing machine. The fracture resistance (N) and fracture modes were assessed. One-way ANOVA was performed followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison (α<0.05). Results demonstrated that all the tested partially veneered designs exhibited enhanced fracture resistances and were comparable to that of the full-contour monolithic translucent zirconia crowns.

    This study assessed the gloss and surface roughness of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin composites corroded with acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) application. One ceramic block, ten CAD/CAM resin composites for premolars, and four CAD/CAM resin composites for molars were assessed. The surface topography of the materials before and after APF application was observed using an electron microscope. The results were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Dunnett’s many to one test (p<0.05). Gloss after APF application was significantly lower for all CAD/CAM resin composites except Artesano. Ra after APF application was significantly higher for all CAD/CAM resin composites except Artesano, Dentcraft HR Block, and Estelite P Block, and Sa was significantly higher for all CAD/CAM resin composites. Irregular surface topography was observed after APF application and the surface features differed among the materials. Therefore, APF application may be detrimental to the surface properties of CAD/CAM resin composites.

    Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) was synthesized from abalone mussel shells (Haliotis asinina) using a precipitation method, and gel HA-Abalone was developed using the carbomer materials with concentrations of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt%. The specimens used were 25 freshly extracted caries-free premolar teeth, and the treatment was done twice a day for 14 days. Gel HA-Abalone 20 wt%, with a crystallite size of 14.70±1.21 nm, was the best concentration to achieve the best remineralization (~863 VHN) of the superficial layer. Based on the results of cell viability assay on gel HA-Abalone 20 wt%, the growth of NIH/3T3 cells was inhibited beginning at a gel concentration of 1,000 µg/mL, and the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value was 1,497 µg/mL. Based on to the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the result reflected statistically significant differences in the average of the cell viability and enamel surface microhardness values (p<0.05).

    The aim of this study was to compare the local and systemic effects of current pulp capping materials containing resin with those of traditional materials in an animal study. A total of 48 rats were used: a control group (n=12) (sub-control and negative control), a resin-containing group (n=18) (Calcimol LC, Theracal LC, Activa–BioActive Base/Liner), and a traditional group (n=18) (Biodentine, ProRoot MTA, Dycal). The materials which had been placed in polyethylene tubes were implanted in subcutaneous pockets. The rats were sacrificed at 1, 2, or 4 weeks. Evaluations were made of subcutaneous connective tissue, the left kidney, liver, and blood samples. Of all the study groups, MTA demonstrated biocompatibility at a level close to that of the control groups. Inflammation was observed to be more severe in resin-containing materials, but Activa Base/Liner showed a more successful local and systemic tissue response.

    The purpose of this research was to investigate the mechanical behavior of commercially available bulk-fill and conventional flowable resin composites using the dynamic micro-indentation method. The effect of inorganic filler content on mechanical properties was also assessed. Weight percentages of the inorganic filler in the resin composite were measured using the ashing technique. The results showed that dynamic hardness and elastic modulus tended to increase with inorganic filler content. Furthermore, the differences in mechanical properties between top and bottom surfaces were less pronounced in bulk-fill flowable resin composites compared with conventional flowable resin composites. In conclusion, the mechanical properties of bulk-fill flowable resin composites are affected by filler content. Moreover, bulk-fill flowable resin composites have a higher polymerization depth than conventional flowable resin composites when sample thickness is 4 mm.

    This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effects of a water-soluble glass based temporary restorative resin (WSG-TRR) on bacteria-induced pH reductions at the bacteria-material interface. Each material (WSG-TRR, glass-ionomer cement, resin composite and conventional temporary restorative resin) was fixed to the bottom of the well of the experimental apparatus. The well was filled with pelleted cells of Streptococcus mutans, and the pH at the bacteria-material interface was monitored using a miniature pH electrode. The concentration of ions released from WSG-TRR and the effect of fluoride and zinc ions on bacteria-induced pH reduction was evaluated. The buffering capacities of WSG-TRR and WSG were also evaluated. At 90 min after the glucose addition, WSG-TRR exhibited the highest pH (5.29±0.12). Fluoride ion was detected at the interface between bacteria and WSG-TRR. Moreover, WSG were found to confer high buffering capacity. A WSG-TRR reduced bacteria-induced pH reductions at the bacteria-material interface.

    This study investigated the effects of a helium cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) on the bonding performance and surface modification of the caries-affected dentin (CAD). Artificial CAD was created by pH-cycling. The microtensile bond of CAD were examined before and after CAP treatments at 24 h and after 2-year aging. The effects of surface modification were studied with contact-angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Thirty-second CAP treatment increased the immediate bond strength of CAD to a level that was statistically the same as sound dentin, and slowed the aging process of the bonding as well. The CAP treatment induced modified CAD surface with increased wettability, cleaner appearance, and increased percentage of the mineral-associated elements and oxygen. This research demonstrated that the helium CAP jet treatments of 30 s and 45 s improved the bond strength of the artificial CAD, and was considerably effective in its surface modification.

    Mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA), which is a biopolymer obtained via 3D-printing, were compared with conventional resins for the realization of interim prosthesis. A PLA built by fused deposition modeling and traditional interim resins (Unifast®, Integrity®, Temporary CB®) were divided into 4 groups (n=10). Each group was investigated for Young modulus, flexural strength, microhardness and analysis of the fractured surface. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA (α=0.05). The porosity of the PLA was calculated from the crystallinity degree and density. PLA-group showed an elastic modulus and flexural strength in the same range than Integrity®-group, better than Unifast®-group and inferior to Temporary CB®-group (p<0.05). PLA-group microhardness was equivalent to Unifast®-group and inferior to Integrity® and Temporary CB® groups (p<0.05). Due to mechanical properties similar to conventional resins and the low porosity rate, this biocompatible 3D-printed polymer may be an interesting alternative to conventional polymer to build temporary prosthesis.

    The effects of mechanical retentive devices and various surface treatments on the shear bond strength between a veneering composite resin and zirconia was investigated. Zirconia disks were classified into three surface-treatment groups: airborne-particle abrasion, overglazing, and overglazing with white alumina particles of three different grain sizes (50, 70, and 105 μm) attached onto zirconia disks (ZR-50, ZR-70, and ZR-105, respectively). They were further divided into four groups (n=44): unprimed, Clearfil Porcelain Bond Activator (CA), Clearfil Photo Bond (CB), and CA+CB. An indirect composite resin was bonded to zirconia specimens. Shear bond strengths were measured. For the ZR-70 and ZR-105 groups, the CB and CA+CB specimens exhibited higher bond strengths than the other two specimens after thermocycling. The ZR-70 and ZR-105 groups achieved micromechanical interlocking, and priming with a phosphate monomer (MDP) yielded stable bond strengths between the composite resin and zirconia with alumina particles attached as retentive devices.

    This study aimed to evaluate the pulpal responses of monkey’s pulp after direct pulp capping (DPC) with the novel mineral trioxide aggregate containing phosphorylated pullulan-based material (MTAPPL). Seventy-two teeth were randomly divided into four groups: MTAPPL; Nex-Cem MTA (NX); TheraCal LC (TH); and Dycal (DY). Histopathological changes in the pulps were observed at days 3, 7 and 70. On day 3, mild inflammatory responses were observed in the MTAPPL, no to moderate inflammatory responses in the TH, whereas moderate inflammatory responses in the NX and DY. No mineralized tissue formation (MTF) was observed in all groups. On day 7, no or mild inflammatory responses were observed in all groups. Initial MTF was observed except for DY. No inflammation with complete MTF including presence of odontoblast-like cells was observed in the MTAPPL, NX and TH groups at day 70. These findings indicate that MTAPPL could be an efficient DPC material.

    This study investigated the bonding performance of two different types of resin cements to computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) composite blocks based on the shear bond strength (SBS) test. A silane-containing self-adhesive resin cement (Panavia SA Cement Universal) and resin luting cement (Block HC Cem) with a primer, were used. Specimens were fabricated from three different types of CAD/CAM composite blocks, and their surfaces were blasted with alumina. Resin cements were bonded to the specimens, and their SBSs were measured after 15 min, 24 h, and after being subjected to thermal cycling for 10,000 and 30,000 cycles. Three-way ANOVA for bond strength revealed that CAD/CAM composite block, resin cement and storage time significantly influenced the SBS values, and the three-way interactions between the evaluated factors, and all the interactions were significant. It was concluded that the bonding performance of resin cements to CAD/CAM composite blocks were material and storage period dependent.

    This study examined the controlled release of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) from a tissue conditioner (TC) containing CPC-montmorillonite (CPC-Mont), the associated antimicrobial activity, and oral mucosa irritation. The CPC release test was performed daily for 28 days in three test solutions: distilled water, 0.2 M NaCl, and 0.2 M HCl. The antimicrobial activities for 7, 14, 21, and 28 days against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus mutans were assessed according to the JIS Z 2801/ISO 22196 standard. An oral mucosa irritation test was conducted using cheek pouches in five male hamsters according to the ISO 10993-10:2010 standard. The amount of CPC released each day and the cumulative amount released over 28 days (6.12 mg) were less than the daily safe maximum of sore throat medicines (8 mg). Additionally, TC with CPC-Mont could sustain antimicrobial activity against adherent bacteria for 14 days and has no oral mucosa irritation potential.

    A prototype surface-reaction-type pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler containing root canal sealer (S-PRG sealer) exhibits bioactive potential by releasing multiple ions. This study explored the suppressive effects and modes of action of S-PRG sealer extracts on proinflammatory cytokine expression in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Expression of proinflammatory cytokines was evaluated by RT-qPCR and ELISA. Expression of phosphorylated nuclear factor-kappa B (p-NF-kB) p65 was evaluated by western blotting. S-PRG sealer extracts significantly downregulated mRNA expression levels of interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-6, and TNF-α in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells; the extracts also reduced the levels of IL-6 protein and p-NF-kB. In order to verify that Zn2+ was responsible for downregulation of proinflammatory cytokine expression, N,N,N’,N’-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl) ethylenediamine (TPEN) was used as a heavy metal chelator with strong affinity for Zn2+. These effects were mitigated by TPEN. The application of ZnCl2 reproduced the actions of S-PRG sealer extracts. These data suggest that S-PRG sealer has anti-inflammatory potential involving heavy metal ions such as Zn2+.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of surface reaction-type pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler eluate on Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-3 secretion by human gingival fibroblasts (HGF). The S-PRG filler eluate contains 6 ions (F, Na, Al, B, Sr and Si) released from the S-PRG filler. The S-PRG filler eluate stimulation induced a slight secretion of MMP-1 and MMP-3 by HGF. It also enhanced the phosphorylation of p38 and ERK. The increase in MMP-1 and MMP-3 secretion by the inflammatory cytokine TNF-α was suppressed by the S-PRG filler eluate. TNF-α-induced increases in the phosphorylation of ERK were slightly enhanced by S-PRG filler eluate. These findings may prompt the development of new therapeutic agents for oral inflammation with materials composed of S-PRG filler eluate.

    Coronavirus disease pandemic has led to a shortage of disinfectant alcohol (DA; 76.9–81.4% ethanol solution) in Japan. This study investigated the availability of hypochlorous acid (HA) as an alternative disinfectant to DA in clinical environment. HA is a safe and economical disinfectant with a broad antibacterial spectrum and low risk of hand irritation, which is used worldwide. In this study, HA and sodium hypochlorite solution (SH) were degraded over time and the degradation was accelerated by temperature and lighting. Results of bactericidal effects of HA revealed that the realistic effective concentration should be 200 ppm. Compared with DA, the dental carbon steel burs were more severely rusted by SH and HA. These results indicated that high concentration of HA generated on-site could be an effective and safe disinfectant for use immediately after generation with consideration of object materials in clinical environment, as an alternative to DA.
