Phase transition behavior of a V-shape switching binary mixture was studied using electric field induced birefringence, selective reflection, and optical rotational power measurements. The mixture was composed of ferroelectric MC452 and antiferroelectric MC881. This mixture has the ferroelectric SmC* phase at the higher temperature and an antiferroelectric phase at the lower temperature. The phase transition temperatures were approximately 85 and 74 degrees C for heating and cooling processes, respectively. The application of an electric field stabilized the ferroelectric phase down to 40 degrees C. The stabilization mechanisms of the higher phase is discussed.

Some binary systems between calamitic mesogens exhibiting SmA, CrB, and CrE phases and n-alkane were investigated. Phase diagrams and temperature dependences of layer spacing of the smectic phases were newly determined in two binary systems of 12TCB/n-dodecane (CrE, SmA) and 8CBAA/n-decane (CrB, SmA) using DSC and X-ray diffraction. The temperature dependences were compared with our previous data for SmA, CrB, and CrE phases. The characteristics of the binary systems were discussed comprehensively.

A phase diagram of a thermotropic liquid crystal was obtained in a pressure – temperature plane using metal Berthelot tubes. One was built in an observation window, and the other not. Two co-existing lines, namely crystal (Kr) – nematic (N), and isotropic liquid (iL) - nematic (N) lines, were drawn in the plane by the latter tube. It was observed that two phases co-exist along the two lines by the former tube.

We have investigate the new types of the phase transition among LC phases originated from the shape transformation of micelles near extremely dilute lyotropic nematic (3~9wt%) in water solution of cationic and anionic surfactant mixture. For thermotropic nematic, orientation order is only broken by order-disorder transition keeping the anisotropy of the “building blocks” which is equivalent to the rod like one molecule. This type of transition shows the first order nature. On the contrary, even the shape and size of building blocks can be changed dependent on temperature, concentration or other thermodynamic quantities in LN. It is easy to understand the shape change of building blocks strongly coupled with phase stabilities among LC phases. We have found the new types of I-Nc(rod)-Nd(disk) continuous phase transitions driven by the shape (sphere-rod-disk) change of the micelles.

An improved interference method is proposed to determine ordinary and extraordinary refractive index dispersions of nematic liquid crystals (LCs). In this method, an LC cell coated with a thin metal layer is used as a Fabry-Perot interferometer which shows us a sharp transmission fringe. In spite of measuring ordinary and extraordinary components, the LC cell, polarizers and other equipment are not rotated during experiment. The index evaluation from a single spectrum avoids errors depending on the measurement position owing to non-uniformities of molecular orientation and cell thickness because we can obtain the two indices at exactly the same position. This system can adapt to a wide frequency range, and does not require any specific wavelength light source or laser. We demonstrate the determination of ordinary and extraordinary refractive index dispersions of a nematic liquid crystal in the visible and near-infrared regions.

We discovered the utility of self-organized periodic orientational structures of a liquid crystal confined within microwrinkle grooves for sensing chiral molecules in gas samples and their chiral handedness. The developed method utilizes a novel phenomenon in which a liquid crystal in microwrinkles alters its orientational structures in response to the chirality of dissolved gas molecules. This structural change can be easily observed by a polarizing microscope alone as soon as a gas sample is blown onto the liquid crystal, enabling the construction of a sensor system for quick evaluation of the chirality of a tiny amount of gas samples at ambient temperatures and pressures. This method is expected to be applicable to the analysis of volatile chemicals in perfumes etc. and to environmental monitoring.

Cholesteric LC droplets dispersed in an isotropic phase are known to exhibit unidirectional rotations under a temperature gradient. The phenomenon is understood as a typical cross-correlation and described by Onsager relations. Since the theory not only describes the observed phenomenon but also predicts the inverse process, we tried to verify it in this report. By unidirectionally rotating cholesteric droplets dispersed in an isotropic phase, we detected a slight temperature gradient induced in the LC cell.

Recently, it has been reported the texture on cholesteric droplets rotates under temperature gradient at the isotopic-cholesteric coexistence state in the mixed system with several liquid crystalline molecules. To examine the generality of this phenomenon, we made the system where the cholesteric droplets were dispersed in an isotropic solvent with fluorinated oligomers, and applied temperature gradient to the system. As a result, the rotation was induced in the droplets with the speed one or two order faster than that in the mixed system with the liquid crystalline molecules.

Diffusion due to developed turbulence of electroconvection in homeotropic nematic systems were studied. Electroconvection in homeotropic system shows peculiar nonlinear phenomena because of interaction between the convection and the nematic director that behaves as a Nambu-Goldstone mode. Motions of tagged-particles were analyzed by the time-dependent diffusion coefficient. The results showed that sub-diffusion appeared in a certain time range. The occurrence of the sub-diffusion suggests that the turbulence has the effect that bounces particles back. Detailed observation for the turbulent structures revealed that the bouncing effect is induced by characteristic line-shaped structures of director caused by the turbulence.

It is well known that N*-LC can be prepared by adding a chiral compound into N-LC. In this study, we synthesized various types of axially chiral binaphthyl derivatives crosslinked with the diarylethene moieties and used them as chiral dopants to prepare photoresponsive N*-LCs. We investigated the photochemical switching behavior and fatigue resistance of the N*-LCs through measurements of polarized optical microscope (POM), circular dichroism (CD) spectra and ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-Vis) spectra.

Liquid crystalline ionic liquids (LCILs) containing a imidazolium cation moiety with various types of counter ions were synthesized. The characterizations of LCILs were achieved by polarizing optical microscope (POM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Chirality induction was achieved by adding axially chiral dopant to nematic LCILs (N-LCILs). The chiral N-LCILs (N*-LCILs) were applied as asymmetric solvents to an electrochemical polymerization for synthesis of helical poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (H-PEDOT). Because LCILs have ionic conductivity, no external supporting electrolyte is required in the electrochemical polymerization using the LCILs. This advantage of LCILs makes it much easier to optimize polymerization parameters and conditions.

Chiral nematic liquid crystal (N*-LC) can be used as an asymmetric reaction field to produce helical conjugated polymers. The helical structure of the conjugated polymers crucially depends on the screw direction and helical pitch of the N*-LC reaction field. Previously, we synthesized axially chiral binaphthyl derivatives bearing asymmetric center moieties at the terminal sites of the substituents, and used them as chiral dopants to prepare the N*-LC system with thermally controllable helical sense. In this study, we prepared novel N*-LC system containing single host nematic liquid crystal (N-LC) and the above mentioned chiral dopants and achieved thermally double chiral inversion.

Here we report the preparation and magnetic properties of two different types of all-organic biradical liquid crystalline (LC) compounds (S,S,S,S)-1 and (R,S)-2. (S,S,S,S)-1 showed a chiral nematic phase and (R,S)-2 did a discotic phase. By SQUID magnetization measurement, (S,S,S,S)-1 showed strong magnetic interaction ( J > 0) at the crystal-to-LC phase transition, while (R,S)-2 exhibited antiferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures and a substantial increase in the molar magnetic susceptibility at the crystal-to-discotic LC phase transition.

Recently, we have developed pi-conjugated ferroelectric liquid crystals which exhibited an anomalous photovoltaic (APV) effect. In the latest study, we have clarified the contribution of the carrier transport properties and the spontaneous polarization to the APV response. However, the APV current was quite small and the performance remained low in that system, due to the polarization relaxation behavior. In this study, we aim to stabilize the polarization state and to enhance the APV performance by a surface stabilization effect. Therefore, we try to prepare the planar-oriented liquid-crystalline thin films with sub-micron thickness.

Triphenylene has been the most representative discotic mesogen. In particular, hexaalkoxytriphenylene has been used for designing many columnar liquid crystalline (LC) materials. We developed a new triphenylene-based mesogen having six carboxylic ester groups. We found that this mesogen, when modified with paraffinic side chains, can self-assemble to form a hexagonal columnar assembly with a wide-range 2D lattice correlation. Furthermore, by virtue of the strong intercolumnar dipole–dipole interaction, the LC triphenylenes spontaneously align homeotropically on a wide variety of solid substrates. Recently, we found that the LC triphenylenes, when bearing certain ionic functionality at the terminal of each paraffinic side chain, assemble into an unprecedented complex three-dimensional architecture.

A polysiloxane containing an amine hydrochloride in a side chain was polymerized via sol-gel condensation reaction of an alkoxysilane. This polymer was soluble in water. Organic-inorganic hybrid spincast films consisting of the water-soluble polysiloxane and lyotropic liquid crystals (e.g. long-chain alkylamine salt) absorbed or desorbed water molecules by a change in the relative humidity. Moreover, we found that the different lyotropic nanostructures in the hybrid films were reversibly induced depending on the relative humidity as revealed by in-situ grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering measurements.

However, controlling the stacking direction of columnar structures is so difficult that it has been a challenge of many research groups. Crosslinked liquid-crystalline polymers containing azobenzene can deform at 5 K under vacuum when irradiated with UV light. This result indicates that photochemical reactions of azobenzene play an important role in this deformation at 5 K, even though a rise in temperature of the polymer films was observed by UV irradiation. We evaluated photoisomerization behavior of azobenzene molecules in the PMMA film and PMMA-co-PMA6AB. These samples isomerize upon exposure to UV light in the liquid nitrogen, 77 K.

A functionalized optical material has been widely studied in the past years. In particular, the interest for polarization holography has been growing because polarization holographic gratings can be used for various applications. These gratings have been fabricated by using photoalignment methods. This process was widely investigated but have some difficulties such as necessity of high-intensity polarized light and specific compounds that limit degree of freedom of molecular design. We have recently found that molecular alignment was induced by photopolymerization of the mixture of anisotropic monomers with moving light. In this process, a periodic structure was spontaneously formed in the obtained polymer film. Moreover, we found that the obtained grating film has distinct polarization property. In this study, we fabricated the polymer films with periodic structures and analyzed its optical properties.

Liquid crystals (LCs) has attracted much attention for potential applications in photonic devices due to nonlinear change in refractive index arising from their photoinduced molecular reorientation. Even in dye-doped LCs possessing large nonlinear optical property, they still require a high-intensity light source to induce molecular reorientation that limits the applicable situations. Recently, we have found that polymer-stabilized dye-doped liquid crystals greatly reduce the required light intensity. In this study, we examined the effect of surface treatment on the reorientation behavior, and succeeded in the reduction of light intensity by 30% just by optimizing the surface treatment condition.

Gold(I) complexes have received much attention as promising light-emitting materials because they strongly luminesce in condensed phases owing to an aurophilic interaction. The aurophilic interaction depends on the distance between two gold atoms; therefore, the luminescent behavior of gold complexes can be changed by controlling their aggregated structures. We have focused on the liquid-crystallinity of gold complexes to control their aggregated structure, and have developed various liquid-crystalline (LC) gold complexes, in which photoluminescence behavior can be switched easily by phase transition. In this work, we designed and synthesized novel LC gold complexes with a different mesogenic core unit in order to figure out the relationship between structure of molecules/molecular aggregates and photoluminescence properties.

The polarization-independent focal images are obtained by taking two images in lens state and one image in non-lens state of a liquid crystal (LC) lens. The two images in lens state are captured by switching the voltages applied to a twisted nematic (TN) LC cell attached in front of the LC lens. Three-dimensional and polarization-independent images of the sample target are obtained by tuning a focal plane of the LC lens and processing an image digital filter from sequential focal images.

A new type of tunable Fresnel liquid crystal (LC) lens composed of transparent interdigitated electrodes and high-resistivity film was manufactured. The interdigitated electrodes were aligned around the central lens unit and different voltages were applied on them. Then the lens power of ±4 diopter was obtained under current 40 m thickness of liquid crystal layer. Moreover, Fresnel type of LC lens with the diameter of 30 mm was manufactured and observed by polarized microscope. Finally, convex and concave lens effects were verified from whole aperture area with the interference fringes and obtained its prospective applications for large aperture tunable lens.

Cholesteric liquid crystals (ChLCs) selectively reflect circularly polarized light with the same handedness as their helix, owing to their self-organized helical structure. Conventionally, control of the reflectance of ChLCs had been the primary focus of research and applications such as reflective displays, color filters, and polarizers have been developed. On the other hand, we have recently reported that the optical phase of light reflected off ChLCs can be controlled in a planar device, by controlling the helix phase. By exploiting this phenomenon, the reflected wavefront from ChLCs can be designed arbitrarily, enabling optical functions such as deflection, lensing, and optical vortex generation from a planar cell.

We stabilized the liquid slippery interfaces after turning off UV irradiation in a wide temperature range by photo polymerization of bifunctional monomers to form gel interfaces. The electro-optical response of azo doped ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) with liquid interfaces and FLCs with gel interfaces was measured and compared. The transmittance of FLCs with liquid slippery interfaces decreased with decreasing temperature. In contrast, FLCs with gel interfaces by polymerization maintained the high transmittance over a wide temperature range below SmA-SmC* transition temperature after turning off UV irradiation. These results indicate that the gel interfaces not only keep the phase separated domain stably like solids on the macroscopic scale but also behave as liquid interfaces on the microscopic scale.

Driving voltage and response time of the polymer stabilized blue phase (PSBP) depend on composition and structure of its polymer networks. We succeeded in reducing driving voltage of PSBP by using photosensitive monomer (11-[4-(4-butylphenylazo)phenoxy]undecyl methacrylate) for polymer stabilization. Azobenzene changes its state from trans to cis by UV irradiation. During UV irradiation, cis-typed azobenzene disorders the orientation of liquid crystals around the polymer networks. Local melting will occur and it is expected to generate isotropic region near the boundary of liquid crystals and polymer networks, and hence liquid crystal molecules respond to the external field easily on the liquid surface,so that driving voltage is reduced. We studied its electro-optical properties and confirmed this effect.

We have invented the concept of “Slippery interfaces”, which has zero anchoring force for attached LC molecules on the interfaces, and demonstrated the drastic reduction of driving voltage in DH-FLC mode (>1 order) keeping the fast switching response (<100μsec). On the contrary to the SmC*, in order to reduce the driving voltage of PSChBP, the new mechanism is essential to cover slippery interfaces automatically on the polymer rods in PSChBP, because the nano-scale interfaces are entirely embedded in the ChBP. In this paper, we propose new principle for designing the spontaneous slippery interfaces based on the disorder effect near the interfaces. Isotropic liquid phase can be produced and wetted on the interfaces by the surface melting effect due to doping the impurities with the affinity to the interface. We also measured the temperature dependence of anchoring energy near the surface transition from anchoring to slippery, and surface viscosity on the slippery interface.

The molecular dynamics of the chiral and achiral smectic liquid crystals S-4-(1-methylhexyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4'-octyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate (S-MH(6)POBC) and 4-(hexyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4'-octyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate (H(6)POBC), respectively, was studied by solid-state 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) and the spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) of several resonance peaks were analyzed in a wide temperature range from the SmA phase to the crystal phase, and the effect of chirality on the molecular fluctuation was investigated. No effect of chirality on the molecular dynamics was detected in the carbon nuclei belonging to the aromatic core or in most of the carbon nuclei in the flexible chain from the results the FWHM and T1 measurements. However, the 13C-NMR study of the chiral and achiral carbons (*C23 and C23) revealed that introducing chirality, namely, the introduction of a (-CH3) group to the C23 carbon, affected the intramolecular correlation between the mobility of the carbon and the rotational motion of the aromatic core. The achiral C23 carbon maintained its active mobility in the wide temperature range from the SmA phase to the crystal phase. However, the mobility of the chiral *C23 carbon became much lower during the smectic-to-crystal phase transition because the freezing of the molecular motion of the aromatic core affected the mobility of *C23. Since the intramolecular correlation might be concerned about the emergence of the spontaneous polarization in the chiral smectic phases, we are investigating further details for the molecular dynamics of chiral liquid crystals by means of a two-dimensional analysis of the solid-state 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy.

Photo-aligned films of an azobenzene-containing polyimide (Azo-PI) treated with octadecylamine (ODA) vapor can induce a large pretilt angle. Both average inclination angle and in-plane order of the Azo-PI backbone structure were significantly enhanced by the ODA vapor treatment. In this study, we have investigated the influence of the in-plane order of Azo-PI backbone structure on the pretilt angle generation. Photo-alignment layers with different in-plane molecular order but almost the same average inclination angle were prepared by two different photo-alignment treatments: single oblique angle irradiation of unpolarized light (UP-L) at 45º, and double light exposure of normal angle irradiation of linearly polarized light (LP-L) followed by oblique angle irradiation of UP-L. The difference in the pretilt angles generated by the two different photo-alignment layers was very small. This result suggests that the influence of the in-plane anisotropy of alignment layers on the pretilt angle generation is minor.

To investigate whether the local structure of ionic liquids is similar to the domain structure of liquid crystals, we have designed and synthesized two sets of racemic and S,S-enriched ionic liquid crystalline compounds which can show the achiral and chiral smectic A (SmA) phases, respectively, and characterized their magnetic properties by SQUID magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy. Here we report the experimental results on the comparison of temperature dependences of the molar magnetic susceptibility (χM), molecular orientation (g-value) and line width (ΔHpp) of the crystalline, LC, and isotropic phases.

We prepared two series of liquid crystalline nOCHP5 and nCOCHP5 dimers with two pentyl cyclohexyl phenyl moieties linked to each other by an n methylene chain via ether or ester linkages, respectively, and their liquid crystalline phase behaviors are compared with each other. Both series of dimers form cybotactic A nematic liquid crystals with short-range layer structures to display layer reflections up to second order. With increasing n, the second order reflection increases intensity to be stronger than the first order one, demonstrating the transformation from bilayer to single layer structures. nCOCHP5 forms bilayer structure at longer spacer length than nOCHP5, suggesting that bilayer aggregation of dimers is stabilized due to dipole interaction as well as the π–π stacking of neighboring phenyl rings.

An easy axis of rubbed polymers with aromatic side-chains depends on liquid crystal (LC) materials. In this study, alignment directions of liquid crystal materials, that is, parallel and perpendicular to the rubbing direction and vertical to the surface, are investigated on a rubbed poly(4-vinyl pyridine) film. LCs with different alignment directions are mixed and the directions are also observed as a function of the mixture ratio.

Cholesteric blue phases (BPs) possess great potential for next-generation electro-optic devices because they spontaneously form three-dimensional crystal structures with a high response speed. We have recently shown that the electro-optic Kerr effect of BPs is anisotropic [1], contrary to common understanding that it is isotropic. Although the anisotropy suggests the need for the alignment control of BPs, there are only a limited number of studies on the topic. In this study, we prepared two kinds of liquid crystal cells using either the rubbing or the photoalignment method, to gain insight on the orientation behavior of BP I crystals on substrates with a uniaxial anchoring potential. It was found that two types of substrates show different behaviors in the azimuthal orientation of the BP crystal.

In order to determine the cell thickness and the wavelength dispersion in Δn of liquidcrystal materials without additional light sources, the interference method and the bire-fringence method are discussed. The cell thickness values measured with the former method less deviate from each other than those with the latter method. The dispersion of Δn tend to deviate whenΔn is large.

A light leakage from pixel edges with the high resolution LC panel has been noticed. It is considered that a flexoelectric effect is one of causes. Evaluations of the flexo-coefficient of LC materials is required. However, the separation of impurity ions which is contained LC materials is the most difficult problem. Our group have attempted to evaluate the flexo-coefficients (e11+e33) for the pure LC materials by extrapolating the graph of the flexo-coefficients vs VHR curve. Then, 12.34 pC/m of the coefficient (e11 + e33) was estimated with no impurity ions for the nematic mixture ZLI-4792.

Binaphthyl type chiral dopants bridged by alkane chain at 2,2'-position are known to possess a large helical twisting power (HTP). We previously reported that the 6,6'-fluoronated binaphthyl type chiral dopant exhibited a large HTP and high solubility in a fluorinated nematic liquid crystal. In this study, we synthesized the 6,6'-halogenated binaphthyl type chiral dopants and investigated influence of the molecular properties such as size of halogen groups or polarity and polarizability of chiral dopants on their HTPs. The 6,6'-chlorinated chiral dopant showed the highest |HTP| among synthesized chiral dopants. On the other hand, |HTP| of chiral dopants decreased with the increasing the size of halogen groups.

A combination of the ionic liquids and liquid crystals yielded a new category of materials called ionic liquid crystals, and was found to offer the higher performance on the ion conduction compared to that in the isotropic phase. In this study, we prepare a series of DEME (N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)ammonium)-based ionic liquids and investigate their phase transition behavior. Details of the phase transition and the nature of the phase will be discussed. In addition, an influence of the length of the terminal alkyl chain and the water content in the samples on the phase behavior was investigated.

Perfluoroalkyl or linear alkyl chain substituted at non-peripheral position of phthalocyanines (Pcs) were synthesized and investigated the effects of the fluorophilic/fluorophobic interactions, their mesophase and electronic properties. Both Pcs exhibit columnar mesomorphism and the thermal stability of liquid crystalline phase is enhanced as incorporation of perfluoroalkyl group, probably due to the nano-segregation between the fluorinated and hydrocarbon moieties in the terminal alkyl chains. Perfluoroalkylated PCBM was also synthesized and characterized to investigate in the binary blends of perfluoroalkylated Pc and PCBM, to confirm the possibility for controlling well-ordered bulk hetero-junction structure for organic solar cells.

We synthesized nonpolar rod-like liquid crystalline molecules consisting of hydrogen and carbon atoms. The compound exhibited a novel liquid crystal phase (X phase) between two conventional nematic liquid crystal phases. We investigated the phase transition behaviors and liquid crystallinities by using a polarized light microscope (POM), a differential thermal analysis (DTA), and one- and two-dimensional X-ray diffractometers (1D-XRD and 2D-XRD). In this phase, a first order transition was observed in POM. Additionally, we simulated X phase structures by GROMACS calculation.

The liquid crystal compound having an anthraquinone and bithiophene moieties were synthesized. The mesophase have been characterized by means of POM, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The observation results, its phase was hexagonal colomnar phase. Furthermore, those electrochemical properties were examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV). And the electrochromism properties of the liquid crystal compound was also examined by CV-UV/vis spectra.

The luminescence efficiency of gold complexes are enhanced by aggregation of molecules due to the intermolecular aurophilic interaction. Since this intermolecular interaction occurs depending on the distance between two gold atoms, we need to control the aggregated structures of molecules in materials. Previously, we have synthesized liquid-crystalline gold complexes with a chiral center in the flexible chain to control the aggregated structure. Those complexes showed the strong luminescence, as the helical pitch gets shorter, by changing the mol fraction of chiral dopant in the ternary mixture of fold complex, chiral dopant, and 5CB. In this study, we synthesized the gold complex with terpenoid structure as a flexible chain including chiral moiety (Figure 1), and examined the properties. Furthermore, we mixed with 5CB to induce chiral nematic liquid-crystalline (Nem* LC) phase and examined the photoluminescence behavior in this Nem* LC phase.

Mechanical responses to electric stimulation in a side-chain chiral smectic A elastomer composed of cholesterol derivative mesogens are investigated. An electric-field-induced shear deformation, caused by the electroclinic effect, is recognized in the chiral smectic A phase with a wide temperature range between 40°C and 120°C. In addition, an electric-field-induced bend deformation is confirmed in the temperature region of the isotropic state.
