Windbreak forests play important roles mainly on house protection from natural disasters and ecological preservation. However, the number of windbreak forests has been decreasing and many researchers has insisted on the importance of their conservation. Even though satellite remote sensing is able to observe wide area, none of studies have yet used it to monitor windbreak forests. The purpose of this study is to develop an extraction method of windbreak forests by using a SPOT-6 image, in Furukawa region, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. We compare three different approaches based on k- means clustering method: the integration of multi spectrum (MS) bands and vegetation indices (VIs), the combination of MS bands and texture, and the amalgamation of fused MS bands and texture. The integration of MS bands and VIs gave a good result with over 0.80 accuracy, while the accuracy of MS bands and texture combination was only 0.64. However, both methods using MS bands still have a problem on the extraction of small wooded elements. The overall accuracy of the amalgamation of fused MS bands and texture was similar to the result of MS bands-VIs pair, which was 0.84, but this method was able to extract relatively small windbreak forests. These results showed the possibility of the application of developed extraction method to monitor windbreak forests.
