This paper wants to reexamine the articles on reading written by Kiyoshi MIKI and to resolve the contradiction between his recommendation for intensive reading and that for extensive reading. In his papers, there are two kinds of discourses that extensive reading is needed for finding out the objects for intensive reading and that intensive reading is needed for recognizing the objects for extensive reading. MIKI was fond of reading classical books, and his favorite books require intensive reading. But in his articles, MIKI argued that who reads classical books has to orient extensive reading, because, for avoiding mental automatism, he had to read works by anonymous authors so as to deeply appreciate classical books. This contradiction between his recommendation for intensive reading and that for extensive reading relates to his discussion of common sense, and that of three order of Blaise Pascal. Due to Pascal, MIKI insisted that the intelligentsia must move from the sphere where he lives to the sphere where he does not live and know. To go to chronically another sphere, the intelligentsia must read classical books intensively, and to go to spatially another sphere, he must read contemporary journalistic writings extensively. According to this interpretation, we can resolve the contradiction of MIKI.

Books about ‘literary museums’ provide an introduction and summary of literary museums scattered across Japan in the form of a guidebook. Eighteen of such books have been published to date. The museums in these books were classified into 4 categories, namely independent literary museum, funded literary museum, converted literary museum, and non-literary museum. Upon discovering the individual characteristics of such classifications and after comparison studies were made, their history was roughly divided into 4 transition periods (before 1980’s, 1980’s to early 1990’s, the mid-1990’s, and the late 1990’s to present) as follows: The “Era of the Bunko Library” where the term ‘bunko library’ was commonly used, the “Era of the Memorial Hall” where the term ‘memorial hall’, which was also referred to as bunko library, was adopted as nomenclature, the “advent of the Era of the Literary Museum and end of the Era the Bunko Library” where the nomenclature use of ‘bunko library’ was declining while the widespread use of the term ‘literary museum’ was rising, as well as the “Era of the Literary Museum” where the term ‘literary museum’ was established as the standard nomenclature. These were the 4 stages of development shown. In other words, the widespread adoption of the term ‘literary museum’ as standard nomenclature, in place of the term ‘bunko library’, can be viewed to have taken place in just barely over 10 years.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the profit orientation and value orientation of children's book publishers. The analysis carried out the following procedure,
    1. Quadrant that made the long-range profit orientation vs. short-range profit orientation and constant value orientation vs. contemporary value orientation was presented.
    2. The ideal type to show what kind of publishers intends which quadrant was set.
    3. Based on the results of the interviews, the present conditions are measured.
Then, the results indicated the following: The children's book publishers are mostly intended the first quadrant (long-range profit and constant value) and the third quadrant (short-range profit and contemporary value). In doing so, the publishers which specialize only on children's books separate their orientation based on the marketing or sales routes. In contrast, the children's books departments of the major publishing companies separate their orientation based on the target reading population (i.e. age, school level).

In this study, I measured the personality of 130 subjects using the Big Five Personality Inventory (BFPI) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and next used Multiple Mode Scale on the same subjects to measure feelings state after the subjects read 6 short novels, after which I analyzed the relations between the personality and feelings state. Results show that, in both the case of Single Correlation Analysis and the Multiple Regression Analysis, the value of correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination is low generally, but there were plural personality scales showing a significant relation between personality and feelings state in 5 of 6 short novels in the BFPI and in all of the short novels in MMPI. The results indicate the possibility of the realization of a retrieval system of books using the feelings that could predict the intensity of different feelings state of individual users based on personality.
